Too many AAA games for 2025?

I have always tended to believe that AAA games will financially sink or swim whether they are good or not, but the outlook for games is so ridiculously stacked for 2025(and probably 2026) that I am unsure if gamers can actually sustain the industry

The games we are seeing today were funded when publishers believed the industry was still growing at a rapid pace. The layoffs the past few years in a post Covid world have shown stagnation within the industry. Even for hardcore gamers, I'm not sure if many of them will find the time to play most or all the games they would in a typical year

Announced big AAA games slated for 2025
Monster Hunter Wilds
Death Stranding 2
Avowed
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Fable
Ghost of Yotei
Assassins Creed
Elden Ring Neightborn
AC Shadows
Mafia 4
Borderlands 4
GTA 6
Marathon
Crimson Desert
Doom the Dark Ages
Judas
The Outer Worlds 2
COD

And the Switch 2 will surely launch with a handful of big IP games(Mario, Metroid Prime, MK9 ect). Not to mention, there will surely be a few yet to be announced games and also smaller AAA games that will become breakout hits like Helldivers 2 and Black Myth Wukong were this year. And, if GTA 6 comes out in the Fall, it will absolutely take up all the oxygen for the remaining months of the year

It could be a make or break year for the future of gaming. We may be in the golden era and not even realize it could be ending soon

  • MH Wilds - probably waiting for a price cut. Demo really didn't do it for me. $70 is a lot. If they make another MH for Switch 2 and it's a little more retro, that might be the better one honestly. No new weapons. Just seems like I've done it before, half a dozen times.
  • Death Stranding 2 - skip, maybe price cut way later.
  • Avowed - GP
  • KC Deliverance 2 - Wait for price cut
  • Fable - GP
  • Ghost of Yotei - wait for price cut
  • AC Japan - skip
  • Elden Wing - skip
  • Mafia 4 - wait for deep price cut
  • Borderlands - skip
  • GTA 6 - skip
  • Marathon - skip
  • Crimson - wait and see. Likely waiting for price cut
  • Judas - wait for price cut or skip
  • Outer Worlds 2 - GP
  • COD - GP
nah, I'm good honestly. Won't be a problem for me.

I see only Monster Hunter Wilds and a long list of "meh" and "maybe". So...no, that`s not too many at all. Different tastes and such.

Common sense based on...every past year?
It's pretty uncommon for games to be announced within a year of release and not come out. At that point, it's mostly downn to polishing for the developers, so it's easier to set a specific time frame. with delays, you usually see delays of games still 2-3 years away

This year was pretty unique with Avowed and AC Shadows both getting delayed out of 2024, late in the year. I would argue AC was delayed primarily because of bad press, though

We shall see I guess,I just don't have too much faith in gaming companies nowadays. And with the state of how broken 80% of AAA games release in, it's hard to think "polishing" is even in their top 5 priorities during the last year of development.

I love how it's just "Assassins Creed", nobody knows anymore which game is actually next and what number it is :D

Damn...we are just not going to have release dates for these until GTA 6 dates.
Most will be 2026 for sure anyway.

I don't play every game on the list or that get released, 5 or 6 on that list interest me or I would play if they are good games, that's not too many in a year

The entire industry holding it's breath for a GTA6 release date, so that other devs can schedule theirs around it.

Wise move really. Just don't release your game within a 1-2 month window of it and you'll probably be fine.

There’s probably like 3 games there that I’d pay to play. A few I’ll give a go on gamepass. Other than that it’s a poor slate for my tastes.

haha, trust me I'll spend a ton on games. Probably mostly smaller games or indies though. . Most of these really don't interest me that much.

I'd take a copy of Ghost of Yotei through donations, but that's about it lol. I'm mostly just waiting on PS stuff since one day I plan to transfer to PC and will buy it there. No point buying it twice full price. I didn't even finish the 1st Ghost. Bailed after completing act 2. Fun game but gets pretty repetitive.

Most of those games will get delayed into 2026 and even if they don't, who cares?

Why would you complain about getting too many games? Its not like you have to buy everything on day one, buy/play the games at your own pace.

True, well that makes sense.

I rarely buy a sequel day 1 or full price of a series I didn't care to complete

I like Ghost, but holy shit that game got ultra repetitive towards the middle

I regret saving them people in those farmlands lol

GTA VI
Resident Evil 9
A Resident Evil Remake
Final Fantasy IX Remake
Elder Scrolls VI

Are the ones I'll want to see, don't care about the rest. I want Fallout 5 and Half Life 3 but doubt those are coming in 2025 or even the year after.

MH: Wilds and a new 3D Mario game would be elite.

Ghost of Yotei could be good, but I'm not sold on it yet.

New ER could save the year. I do miss Fable but I'm a bit worried.

Overall could be a good year, like this year was. I expect more games from Nintendo and Sony than are listed.

Also, I'm a sucker for Borderlands so I'm in on that one.

I cannot understand why this is too many. It’s like 1-2 per genre. Do you guys like all genres or what? We used to have this many AAA games a year PER GENRE damn it.!

What is the definition of a AAA game? Is it purely based on how much $$$ gets dumped on it? Cuz 2/3 of those look like complete shit based on existing evidence.

Concord is "AAA" game too right?

It's shaping up to be an incredible year, and that's even before any Switch 2 exclusives get shown.

I'm interested in a quarter of that list and it'll still be a lot. Add in Nintendo and we're drowning in games however 2024 was total bunk so I'll take too much over nothing.

We're already seeing AAA with longer dev cycles that have them come out being dated trend chasers, and the push for games to be an ongoing service means they're sucking up time for other games.

It's a recipe for inevitable failure, and we should see more of these games be leaner AA experiences instead. That way, you wouldn't need to be a service or do bad monetization to make up for the budget.

Industry was healthier when PS2 budgets were the norm.

The games in that list that I’m likely to purchase can be counted on a hand that’s missing 3 fingers. Then there’ll hopefully be some Nintendo titles sprinkled in as well.

But for me it doesn’t look like anything special yet.

Bro, losing interest in activities you used to enjoy can be a sign of depression. Maybe it's time to consider if there's more going on. Stay safe.
