Top 110 Greatest/Most Influential Anime

Status
Not open for further replies.
Out of pure boredom(as well as my over-whelming curiosity and quest for knowledge), I've compiled this list of anime that I feel are the greatest. I've taken many factor's into account. Most importantly, influence on the genre that each anime represents, as well as popularity and long-lasting appeal.

First and foremost, I do not claim to be an expert on Japanese animation, nor do I work within the industry. I just watch a lot of it. If there are any glaring omissions on this list, I probably just neglected to think about them.

Without further ado, the list:

I'm not sure where I'd put more modern hits like 'The Cat Returns', 'Howl's Moving Castle', 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex', or 'Full Metal Alchemist' since its too early to fortell what kind of impact they will have on the industry.

Comments? Suggestions? Disagreements? Omissions? Share your thoughts.

Edit: I've highlighted the ones that are available in the United States.

What's Doraemon?

Doraemon is a gigantic robotic cat. The show has been airing since the 70s and is still churning out new episodes.

What's the point in making a list so ridiculously long? It seems more like the task was "List all good-to-great anime along with some of the crap that turned out really popular".

There was no real point. I just grouped together the greatest anime that I felt had any influence on the industry and numbered them.

It just so happened I had exactly 110 anime on the list.

too much old school anime loving there. Honestly some of that 70s stuff just does not hold up.

Greatest and influential are 2 different things. Your list i dont think has much to do with the "greatest"

Your're right that some stuff does not hold up. But everything I put on that list certainly does. At least I think so.

Oh, and since I want this to be a great discussion topic, go ahead and list what you feel are the greatest anime. In your mind. You don't even have to list 100 or even 10. Just explain why you feel what you have listed is 'the greatest'. It can be based on anything, influence, popularity...hell, I don't care, the best mecha designs for all I care. Whatever you think constitues 'greatness'.

I'd take off Ninja Scroll. Didn't that tank over in Japan?

It definitely didn't have the same following there as it obtained in the United States.

Still, there is something to be said for its superb animation, interesting storyline, and graphic violence.

Come to think of it, another 'flop' in Japan that did well overseas would be "Battle Angel Alita". Any thoughts on that one?

Edit: Another 'flop', believe it or not: Ghost in the Shell: The Movie.

Though, that did finally become popular in Japan after it did well overseas.

I knew that GitS bombed originally in Japan, I just ignored that part since I feel it deserves to be on the list due to it's influence on things.

Ninja Scroll, on the other hand, only has nice animation and excessive violence going for it. I wouldn't call the storyline interesting whatsoever.

Lupata Castle in the sky
Wings of honneamise
Bubble Gum Crisis 2032
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Lupin III- The Secret of Mamo
Lupin III- Goodbye Lady Liberty
Tank Police
Curse of the Yoma
Princess Mononoke
Perfect Blue
GITS

Ah, another 'Mamo' fan. Good to see. The film gets an unfair rap because it's no "Cagliostro". I personally love the story as well as the art style.

Tank Police

Definitely one of the more influential early OAVs.

BErserk should be on that list.

I was wondering when somebody was going to mention that one.

And I'd almost agree. The only reason I didn't put it on the list is because it's 'relatively' new(1998). Though, that didn't stop me with other modern classics like Naruto and Spirited Away.

I'm not sure about how influential it's been on modern anime. But it does have a humongous fanbase. Actually, it's an unusual anime. Unusual in that, when it first aired back on late-night TV around '98, it had tremendously good ratings for a late-night program.(Much higher than other shows from that period like Vampire Princess Miyu and Outlaw Star). Despite this, it never got a second season, unfortunately.

It'll probably become a classic, if it hasn't already. Where would you place it on the list? #73 sounds about right.

Wow, I used to watch all these when I was a little kid, cool.

That Super Dimensional Fortress Macross was called Robotech, right?

Can anyone recommend me something like Ninja Scroll?

Medieval-fantasy (important!) Japan/ China/ Korea with demons, sword battles, NINJAS and that stuff? I don't care if it's hand-drawn from the 70's, 80's or CG from present.

Nudity is NOT welcome, though.

The topic is greatest/most influential, so what does it matter if he listed some of the older series? Even though you may not think that those older shows "hold up" in comparison to most today, many of them were infact influential for their time and earned their popularity. I mean, when it comes to animation quality alone, many of those older series that used cels actually outshine most of the stuff you see today.

Twelve Kingdoms doesn't have ninjas, but you may enjoy it.

I'm still pretty much a newbie when it comes to anime.

Hikaru no Go
Girls Bravo
Midori no Hibi
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu DELUXE
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu Final
DearS
Tokyo Underground
Dragon Ball (dubbed)
Dragon Ball Z (dubbed)

Are all the anime I have watched completely. The only one I can say I honestly thought was bad was Tokyo Underground. It was going well for the first 15-20 episodes, and then it just felt like the producers tried to rush to a finish by episode 26. The final product felt unpolished and incomplete.

I currently am watching Samurai 7 (which I'll finish tonight) and Girls Bravo Season 2, and I have Full Metal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo on my hard drive ready to watch.

In the immediate future, some of the anime I plan to watch are:
All of the Gundam series (although I have no idea in what order I'll watch them)
Yakitate
Naruto
One Piece
Excel Saga
Chobits
Hajimme no Ippo
Speed Grapher
Inuyasha

EDIT: Oh, and I have seen Spirited Away. Great film. :)

Hi there.

Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack

Then everything else.

OOH! Yotoden: The Movie I think it's called. GREAT OAV series from around 1989-1990 with teriffic animation. I think you'd LOVE it.

Yep. But to be honest, you don't HAVE to watch ZZ Gundam(Though, its not like you have a choice in that matter, as it hasn't been localized, and probably never will be) to get the full impact of the story. Still, it is an interesting show.

Edit: I also stronly recommend Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories. Great side-story, and really shows what it was like on the side-lines during the war.

In fact, I probably shoulda put that on my list...ah well.

Oh, I also plan to watch the whole Crest of the Stars (Senkai no Senki was the original name, I believe) trillogy (I hear it's a pretty good action anime)

Do so! Crest of the Stars is a great series(Though a bit short, but that can be a good thing.) It does have a lot of story in the very beginning, but if you can put up with the exposition, you'll be well-rewarded.

The Crest/Banner of the Stars saga is so not an action show. I absolutely love this series, but if you go in expecting action, you'll be disappointed. Heck, you may fall alseep!

That's fine, I don't care what genre it is, really, as long as it's good. :)

I'm also going to watch the whole DB saga in its original, uncut form sometime in the future. I want to see what it was actually like before funi localized it. Especially the music, which is supposedly great.

Hah, I just realized your avatar is animated.

Actually, I had thought of putting Lupin at #1, since it basically created the 'adult' anime. Buuuuut, Doraemon is tough to top.

That list need Hikaru no Go, didn't that anime itself make Igo über popular again?
I'm pretty sure I remember reading reports that Go has became immensely increasingly popular, especially among the youth, in Japan since Hikaru no Go was made. And since that was one of the inspirations for making the anime in the first place, I say well done, Dentsu, Studio Pierrot, and TV Tokyo

distantmantra said:
I agree, plus I suggest The Prince of Tennis, unless I missed it.
I did not put Prince of Tennis on there. My reasons are basically because it's still really new(Which is a shitty excuse, I know).

Though, I did put a lot of great sports anime on there like Touch, Captain Tsubasa(My favorite), Slam Dunk, and Ashitu no Joe.

Nice list. Just going into your bit about influence a few changed I'd make...

I'd put Nausicaa before Totoro as Nausicaa got Ghibli started.

Think Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakur aneed to be a bit higher given their influence on the magical girl genre.

Few things I think should be on the list.

No Lain? ABe's first show

No Nadia? Gainax's first big series

No Hoshi no Koe/VOices of a distant star? Guy made it solo, give some credit :)

No .hack? A multi-marketing-platform series

Nothing from Brocoli? Their marketing whoring deserves some credit

Thanks distantmantra and SMD.

So I should watch:

- Twelve Kingdoms
- Wrath of the NINJA! - The Otoden Movie (google rules!)

Anything else worth mentioning?

FUCK!! ER, I mean, OOPS!

Nadia HAS to be on there! Damn, how did I neglect THAT??

I was wild about that show in the mid-90's, and it remains one of my all-time favorites.

Thanks for the heads-up, it's going on the list.

As for Captain Tylor, I LOVE that show.. Buuuut, I don't think it qualifies as being among the greatest. I don't know. It's certainly one of the funniest anime out there. Where would you put it, if you could?

Good point, plus Nausicaa has a much more more serious plot. Though, Totoro is one of the most beloved characters of all time. I'd put them on equal footing, actually.

Think Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakur aneed to be a bit higher given their influence on the magical girl genre.

True, though I think shows like Magical Emi and Cutie Honey had a bit more influence in that regard.

Thought about it, but nah. Interesting plot, and its certainly unique, but I don't think its among the best. Maybe if I did a top 150
No Nadia? Gainax's first big series

Fixed!
No Hoshi no Koe/VOices of a distant star? Guy made it solo, give some credit :)
I honestly havent' seen it. It's been localized by ADV, right?
No .hack? A multi-marketing-platform series
I don't think this is going to have too much of an effect. Actually, I haven't spoken with many people who are wild about this series(I'm not too fond of it myself).
Nothing from Brocoli? Their marketing whoring deserves some credit
Hmm...name some of their stuff. I'm not familiar with the Brocoli name, unfortunately.
