ferrets ferrets ferrets ferrets FERRETS!!!
I am a freelance writer, and I'm an American, so naturally I pay through the nose on health insurance. So much, in fact, that I decided to forego dental for the time being since my teeth weren't bothering me.

The other day I noticed pain in my ear and teeth, so I went over to the nearby dentist. Apparently a new infection has spread under a tooth that I had a root canal and crown put on five years ago, and so I require another root canal undertaken on the same tooth -- unless the tooth turns out to be fractured by this infection, in which case there's no saving it. I got the first half of this root canal work done today; the second half will be on Tuesday.

The total cost of this procedure will be about $1400 counting X-rays. I got a 10 percent discount for paying up front.

Go to the local college dental school next time.

I got a root canal, cleaning, three fillings, and a mouth guard since they think I grind my teeth in my sleep for $250.

On the plus side I can deduct this $1400 come tax time, which is secretly awesome.

I freelance and have no insurance! -- can't afford it and still pay bills and estimated taxes. Whee!

My teeth better stay healthy, or I'll just hafta grab a pliers. Only thing getting me to the doctor's office is if I develop a groin problem! And I'm not 100% sure I love my balls $1,400 worth... but close.

(I really ought to just find more lucrative work... and stop taking so many naps...)

This is why I hate American healthcare.

But as someone mentioned, colleges are supposedly a good place to go to get cheap medical help. Haven't done it myself, though.

Dental costs about 350 a year through my work. I pay 60/cleaning and like 70 for xrays once a year or so, so roughly 200 a year for my dental bills. It's not worth it. Of course if I had lots of cavities and whatnot, it would be worth it. I hate dentists too. The actual dentist looks at your teeth for 5 minutes and charges you like 50 bucks. Motherfucker. I always tell them I don't want to see the doctor, I trust the hygenists' opinion.

Same thing with car insurance. I pay more each year in car insurance than my CAR IS WORTH. Granted it is for bodily harm and damage to the other vehicles/etc, but I have 1 ticket in 5 years and drive a behemoth, nothing can touch me.

I pay $30 a month for the most basic health insurance, just in case I get cancer or some shit I am covered. $1000 deductible.

It seems like most retail companies like to rape their employees concerning benefits, or at least mine. For full coverage I would be paying around 300 a month for a shitty HMO. No thanks. And that is for a single person. Ridiculous.

In the future you will be able to save money in a medical bank account. Of course if you had that money to save you'd have insurance.
