Toshiro Nagoshi Interview (creator of SMB and team behind FZero GX)

Toshiro Nagoshi Interview

Notable quotes:

Q: How difficult was it to convert the gameplay [from arcade to Gamecube for Super Monkey Ball]?

A:...it took a group of four about two months.

Q: Can we expect a Super Monkey Ball 3?

A: Of course. I couldn’t comment on that subject before, but it’s much more likely to happen now.

Q: Tell us a little bit about the collaboration with Nintendo on F-Zero. What sort of advantages and difficulties were present in working with them?

A: They have very serious and strict policies in making their games to a very high standard. The two staffs working together sometimes had to compromise on conflicting views on things like the visuals. It was rather hard to communicate with them, all the way in Kyoto... But other than that, not many problems.

Q: Ever thought of making an RPG style title?

A: Yes, yes. We’ll probably announce something in the near future. Of course we can’t delve into the small details, but our team is working on some stuff, including an action-adventure and an RPG style game. Next year should be very interesting for us. This year was sort of like a preparation, really. Please look forward to it!

Cool! Monkey Ball 3!!!!! :P

Surprised there was no mention of DS or PSP

That comment about him enjoying the fun of flash and freeware games leads me to think he could be up to something with the DS.

Fishie strikes again!

whoa! nagoshi has started to look sort of like the singer from fine young cannibals! less tanning, more monkey ball!

F-Zero GX is tied for my all time favorite racing game. I cannot wait to see everything else they have to offer.

Oh, Super Monkey Ball is cool too.

Further proof of my theory that the ex-Smilebit team have been working on a Panzer Dragoon RPG.

Nagoshi has had that tan since TGS if not earlier.... the man is seriously obsessed with buying expensive clothes and getting as close to a center guy tan as possible.

I love it.

Er,... you mean Shining Force Neo. ;)

Nice to hear Super Monkey Ball 3 is coming, most likely multiplatform I'm guessing. PSP/DS Monkey Balls would be nice too though.

stylus/thumb monkey ball is scary.... the analog nub monkey ball is even scarier... huge dead zone = huge headache for da monkeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyzzzzzz.

I dunno... it'd be better than the digital pad SMB we've got on GBA/NGage/mobiles. Namco's Pac'n Roll uses an interesting concept (where you roll a "hamster ball" with the touch screen to move) that could be applied to Monkey Ball pretty well.

What the fuck has happened to Nagoshi? I met him several times. He was normal. a bit pudgy but you didn't go into the room, greet him and think "Oh my god, this man looks like he was rejected from the gayest boy band in the world for looking too gay."
He's gone tanning bananas! I like Monkey Ball less now. And that makes me (am) cry!

Help!
I just showed this to a buddy.
He said:
I'm going to have a wank staring right into his eyes
I think I'm going to have to as well. Can't be outdone!
But what if I end up imprinting him in my desiro-matrix and become a Nagoshi sex stalker slut?

Haven't you already? I seem to remember you telliing me about how you wanted him to dip your balls in ice cold whisky while frothing you off with his 'alcoholically shaking' artifically brown hand.

SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY...OOOOOOO OOOOOOO!!!

With Spikeout easily being my most wanted game at the moment (and one of my most wanted game for the last six freaking years), I feel inclined to post the comments made about that upcoming jewel.

Spikeout Battle Street

Spikeout Battle Street is based on the lesser known Spikeout arcade games, should we view this game as an update to the arcade games or more of a sequel?

Nagoshi: Well, there’s a lot of updates, but the main characters have changed from the original. (Though you might still find the original characters in there.) The base gameplay hasn’t changed, so if you enjoyed the arcade game, you will most certainly enjoy this, as well.

Will there be any references to the older games in the series, and what will this mean for the many people whose first visit to the world of Spikeout will be this Xbox game?

Nagoshi: There are connections, yes. I think maybe many of these people may have heard of the arcade game before, at least, and upon playing this they’ll discover what exactly it’s all about. Maybe not so much in territories outside Japan, so I’m not so sure about that...

Like Monkey Ball, the arcade game had limited distribution in the west so there isn’t a large existing fanbase for the game worldwide. Do you think this might have an effect on the reception of the game?

Nagoshi: Hmmmmm...since it’s an online real-time action beat-'em-up game, I’m sure that will attract the interest of many players.

While incredibly popular in the late 80s and early 90s with games like Double Dragon, Final Fight and the Bare Knuckle series (Streets of Rage in the west), we don’t see too many games in the beat em all genre these days. Do you hope to bring the genre back to the attention of the general public?

Nagoshi: I think myself and a lot of others kind of hope for that. There’s a lot of retro game fever going around right now, especially here in Japan. Lots of revivals are coming out in all kinds of forms. I’d like to make something like this with more story, more dynamics for all those hardcore genre fans. But I think with communication of the sort Xbox Live enables, this sort of game could be even more fun.

What sort of features will be implemented in the Xbox live play beyond the multiplayer mode?

Nagoshi: I can’t talk about too many details. There will be extras, of course. But the main draw is the online multiplayer mode.

While MMORPGs have become very popular in Japan recently, it seems like other types of online games still have a ways to go in appealing to the general public here. What sort of reception do you hope the game will receive?

Nagoshi: There’s kind of a glut in the MMORPG market right now, as there’s a whole bunch of game competing for a similar audience, with little variation. I think that there’s people who would like to play different kinds of games online. We’re aiming for a different type of online gamer with Spikeout than MMORPGs are.

Hard to believe it's going on seven years since I've been craving a home version of Spikeout. The freaking Saturn was still on sale at that point.

Whoever "Fishie" is, I want to kill him...and I'm not even sure why. Looking at that pic, I can tell that strangling him would make me happy.

I like this look for him. like he was rolling aimlessly through New Mexico in a giant ball and upon witnessing a horrible banana truck accident acquired the spirit of a Pueblo shaman. His new holy name shall henceforth be: Daytona Windmonkey.

Just when I'd come to terms with never seeing a SMB3 he goes and says that ...

And "much more likely to happen" just isn't good enough!

WTF? Why does the female character have a completely different artstyle from the other characters? She looks out of place.

any mention of monkey ball 3 makes me get all excited.

I'm all excited right now.

"Grrr!" "Hmph!!" "Arrr!" "Hihi~! ^_^"

Actually, I noticed that too. Not even remotely realistic.

Nagoshi-san is without a doubt the coolest gentlemen the videogame industry has ever seen. I honestly don't think the majority of the members of this forum actually realize what this man has accomplished.

I have not played any of the Super Monkey Ball games, since that's not my genre. But I am a HUGE fan of Nagoshi's racing games! HUGE!! I mean, Daytona USA is the game that put polygon arcade racers on the map and made them what they are today, and Super GT is arguably the prettiest racing game ever created.

The man is a FUCKING LEGEND! And yet, while I'm here, sitting in my living waiting for the day I get to shake hands with Nagoshi...my idol....this enormous icon, here we have Fishie, a member of GAF/OA who just casually gets to walk up to him on occasion and interviews him like it's just another day at the ballpark.

Damn you Fishie!!!!!! I don't normally admit to being envious of another person, but this time, I am fucking JEALOUS of you, you bitch!!!!!!!! :D Seriously though, good work on befriending this man. You are arguably the luckiest guy on GAF!

Nagoshi is also pretty down to earth. Instead of being a closed door meeting recluse during TGS, he spent a great deal of time in front of his games in the booth.

Also a really good interviewee... I share Isamu's high opinion of him.

**speaking on Fishie's behalf**

Unfortunately, Mr. Fishie can't respond personally after an incident which involved him and a Mario Sunshine graphics thread. He's been inactive and banned for over 3 years now. He appreciates your comments though.

The girl really seems to like that particular shirt or it's her official interview shirt. And i guess Fishie also has an official interview outfit. Although they probably did both interviews on the same day.

Heh, beats me...she's not the only chick in the game though.

I think there's two gangs you can use in the game...not sure though. Hopefully the information will start to flow in a couple of weeks.

BTW, Nagoshi's outfit looks awfully familiar to Ryo's. :lol

Is the one at the bottom also a SEGA building?

Yup...it's also a Sega building where Sonic Team and the Woworks crew work at.

And as some already guessed -- both interviews were conducted back-to-back on the same day, which is why Ali and Zero have the same outfits on.
