The Tour Start from Rotterdam marks the comeback of the prologue time-trial, not included in the race programme for the last two years. It first appeared on the itinerary of the 1967 Tour, won by Spanish rider José Maria Errandonea. The fastest short-distance specialists of prologue time-trials were Bernard Hinault (5 wins), Eddy Merckx, Thierry Marie and Chris Boardman (3 wins each). In the 1994 Tour the British rider broke the fastest record with an average speed of 55,152 km/h. With the Grand Start of the Tour de France, Rotterdam confirms its reputation of sportiest city in The Netherlands. The city’s record is impressive: the yearly international Fortis Marathon, the Bavaria City Racing with Formula 1 cars, the Red Bull Air Race, the final game of the Euro 2000 football championship won by France, the Davis Cup and the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, the Champions Trophy Hockey, to name just a few… With three professional football clubs, including the famous Feyenoord, Rotterdam boasts a great football tradition. And since top-level sports could not exist without mass sports, the people of Rotterdam can choose between more than 400 associations to do sports. Rotterdam has also proved several times that it is the Dutch city of events. Large sports and cultural events such as the Ortel Summer Carnival, the World Port Day, the International Film Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Dunya Ortel Festival and the national celebration of New Year’s Eve on the Boompjes Avenue attract large crowds.

Yes it is that time of the year again. I threw this together in like 20 minuets and it is late so if there are any super obvious errors, complain now, and when I wake up in ~8 hours, I'll fix them. Thing that stinks the most about this year is the fact that the route the tour is taking through Belgium puts them so damn close to the F1 track, but they won't actually be cycling on it. Going up Eau Rouge on a bike would have been cool to see (last year they followed a portion of the Monaco F1 circuit, so maybe there is a theme developing.....)

Oh and I guess this info is kinda important. The prologue stage starts later today (11:30E/8:30P), http://www.versus.com/shows/tour-de-france/ is a good site if you are in America to follow the Tour with, and there are probably a few different iPhone/Android apps out there as well. I'll do some digging later today to fill all the info out as best as I can, like I said this was kinda short notice.

This is probably the only thing my roommate cares about every year. Going to follow this thread so I know at least a little about what is going on.

I followed this last year through synopsis videos on the internet, as someone who had never watched or cared about cycling before, and found it very entertaining.

Between this and the football I don't think I have or will have slept from June to August.

Go Cadel Evans. :D

I'll be shocked if it's not Contador - he's a climbing and time trial machine as shown last year, and he's probably only gotten better this year.

That said, the next tier is very competitive - Schlecks, Armstrong, Wiggins, Evans and I'm sure there are a few more.

Ready for the Tour. Have Versus on at this very moment waiting for the Prologue. Ready for three weeks of action culminating on the dreaded Tourmalet! It is going to be epic.

Versus is billing this as Contador vs. Lance, with the gloves off this year, but I'm hoping Andy Schleck pulls it off. Schleck vs. Contador in the mountains could be an amazing battle. Schleck's going to have to perform better in the TT though.

Bring on the racing. Viva Le Tour!

Totally hyped for Versus to focus entirely on Lance Armstrong and tell us everything Lance Armstrong is doing and putting the cameras on Lance Armstrong when there are other, better guys getting shit done.

To be fair, the only time Versus gets any ratings is when Lance is riding, so it makes sense for them to do that. Besides, the guy did finish third last year. It's not like he's not a contender, especially considering the team he is on. We'll also get plenty of news on Contador and the Schlecks. They'll focus plenty on the top Sprinters during those stages. Who do you want to see them cover more?

Unfortunately we get the same Lance-centric commentary in the UK, albeit it different coverage with more balance for the rest of it. To me Armstrong represents everything that has been bad about cycling for years. I wish the Tour had gone the way of the Vuelta and not invited Radioshack, but I guess this is the last year I'll have to put up with it.

Anyway, really excited for the race. Hoping the Schlecks can mount a challenge to Contador (although the fact that SaxoBank is falling apart may not help). Also very interested to see if Cavendish can put his awful start to the season behind him and achieve his aim of taking the green jersey. And looking forward to the cobbles on Tuesday.

:lol

sad but true :(

Versus Tour coverage is a Lance cock sucking fest(at least it has been in past years), but I guess its the only way they get ratings?

he's the guy who always wins the sprints right? Is that the green jacket?
No, he's a time trial specialist, also strong in the cobbled classics. The green jersey is the sprinters prize but sprinters, as a rule, can't time trial well.

Cancellera excels at time trials ... don't really remember him being involved in sprints.

Interesting prologue, can't wait for the mountain stages so we can have the true Tour contenders appear.

Depends, if the prologue is short enough, sprinters can win. Thor Hushovd did a couple of years ago. And we shouldn't forget that US sprinter Tyler Farrar did really well today (though he is known as having some mastery of the discipline as well).

This is true, although I did say 'as a rule'. Perhaps I should have just said that Cancellara is no sprinter.

Good prologue overall in my opinion. The weather and tight course made it more interesting than it had a right to be though. Going to be a very flat ride tomorrow, and with the early part of the ride near the coast, it might make a breakaway possible.

Too bad the coast part is early on in the stage. That part of the Netherlands is very windy and may be difficult for some riders. Now they have enough time to catch up in the remaining kms.

The giro had a similar stage, but that was in the final part. Minutes were lost there.

The Tour last year had a similar stage too, either stage 3 or 5. Don't think any time was lost, but damn did it look like it was not a good time or place to be riding.

I wish whoever was organizing these events would reverse the rule disallowing riders to take their helmets off on mountaintop finishes. Helmets are dumb looking.

At the bottom of the screen you’ll see jerseys, denoting where riders are. Green, yellow, white, polka dot, and Lance Armstrong’s, because damn it, he’s Lance Armstrong.

Although, personally, I’m more excited to see three minutes of riding followed by a minute of commercials.

Good show from Lance, his best TT of the year on a day when all the big players were there. It's just a matter of time before Tony Martin hits a big one.
