I put 120 hours in and traded it towards Oblivion.

Oblivion owns GRAW. In fact, I'd wager you fight someone named GRAW in Oblivion.

dragonballz quest 8 was boring and archaic in design

graw rhymes with slaw and is probably fun

mission accomplished, maf.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo MAF.

You try too hard, Matlock. The fact that you bring up the same stuff when you insult it shows that it goes over your head. It's supposed to be 'archaic'. How you try to insult the game by using one of the main selling points in Japan and the US shows how much of an idiot you are.

I look at it this way: If MAF does not enjoy DQVIII, then it is better to have the game go to someone who could enjoy it more, since he has apparently has his fill with it.

Nothing wrong with not liking a game. Everyone's tastes are different.

(I love the game to death, myself, mind you.)

wait for MGS3: subsistance, which will be the greatets game this generation, followed closely by MGS3!

I wound up being pretty "meh" on DQ8. Short dungeons, the lack of a job system, and boring fights reminded me why nostalgia often betrays me.

Well you are good at hating anything if it would anger enough people.
Either way, after VII, VIII was a nice change, but I could do without the skill system. I just never liked how loose the job system was. A healthy balance of only certain characters can learn certain classes and the ability to branch out in the skills at a much faster rate would be nice.

only because you dont have broadband and dont get into multiplayer over live

No, I simply don't go into games WANTING to like them because they come from a certain series or developer. Fuck pedigrees; fuck nostalgia; a game needs to be able to entertain me WITHOUT requiring me to color my perception of it beforehand.

The monster team, alchemy pot, superb localization, and Jessica kept things interesting for me. I've never played any other RPGs past the 70 hour mark other than DQ games. I'm biased but I've recommended the game to a lot of non-DQ people and they really enjoyed it.

Did you beat the game Drinky? I thought some of the dungeons were pretty long myself. The desert dragon graveyard, dhoulmagus's dungeon, and the last dungeon! My god the last dungeon was like 5 hours in itself.

I did, and I actually really enjoyed the last dungeon. I wish all of them were like it. The majority of them, though, had ridiculously tiny maps and no real puzzles to speak of.

Despite its utter ugliness and awkward pacing, I enjoyed DQ7 quite a bit more.

No, but I'm sure you go into plenty wanting to hate them. ;)

The one problem with the dungeons is that somehow the map made them look huge but they weren't as big as they looked.

Despite its utter ugliness and awkward pacing, I enjoyed DQ7 quite a bit more.

Class system do it for you? That's about the only thing that I found quite better than DQVIII. Personally I was just nutty for mastering as many as I could. Gave a lot of oporunities for skills that actually made me think for a moment and go "Okay use this skill to easily wipe out these monsters."

If you put in the time to beat the game you must've liked it. Unless you're some sick person who can play something that's "meh" for the 60 hours it requires to beat it. I can't do that shit.

Drinky likes DQ8 according to my standards.

You got yourself a DS, didn't you?
C'mon kid, lighten up. I'm only having myself some dumb fun here.

The game takes a lot of good ideas and does them by the book, but DQ8 just doesn't have enough "meat" to the battle system or dungeons. That said, it's definitely a step in the right direction over Suikoden III, though.

What was so attractive about the job system in DW7 anyway? The sheer glut of redundant or worthless skills served only to make battle selections a tedious hunt and peck process. Not that I prefer the way DQ8 handled it's completely -rigid- player progression, but the ratio of useful skills to junkpile was far more lenient.

Not even considering the misguided island backtracking that plagued much of the game scenario. DW7 is as bleh as you can get.

And speaking of trying to like a game, despite knowing better I tried to like Suikoden 3 REALLY, REALLY hard... like 50+ hours of trying.

why the hell are you talking about suikoden 3 anyways? Or even saying DQ8 is a step in the right direction from Suikoden 3???

Dragon Quest has been around for far longer and has never strayed too far from its original formula. It never stepped anywhere near Suikoden.

I still find it bizarre how much this game was hated. Easily my favorite Suikoden, and it got 83 hours of my gametime from me.

I made the comparison because DQ8 looks and feels like it was spawned from Suiko3.
O_o
Me thinks your copy of DQVIII had some problems with it.

My biggest complaint was that Suiko3 desperately needed a better navigation system, instead of having to hoof it everywhere throughout the entire game. My play time would easily have been halved, and the game would have moved at an acceptable pace instead of the snail crawl it was. And aside from the major group battles, there was no thinking required for any of the fights (boss battle or not) in the game.
