Tribute to the best 3D platformer

... released before 1996. :lol

I really dig Jumping Flash. The sequel was so-so, but the original was one of the best things on the PS in the early days. I really played a hell out of the demo available at launch before the game was released. Of course, there was the novelty of the first 3D platformer, but I think there was more.

The play mechanics were simple, but they worked. And so did the first-person, for that matter. There was no camera issues in the game. Only the digital controls felt a bit clunky, but you got around those in no time.

I don't think the game was really much of a looker, but it did convey great heights in a convincing fashion and those levels had a lot of charm, despite all their blockiness. One thing that was definitely top-notch was the soundtrack. There were a lot of great tunes in that game. Kudos to whoever was responsible for composing them.

To the uninitiated, I'd say JF is worth a try. As with many early 3D games, it didn't age too well but if you're willing to overlook that, you can experience a platformer that is really one of a kind.

JF was awesome. There was a rumor that they were making a JF PS2 game but I don't know what happened toit. They're reviving Warhawk for the PS3, so maybe we'll see JF make a comeback on it too.

Those old PSone cases deserve a tribute too. I always liked them for some reason.

JF was super fun. I would love a new one.

Yeah, me too. I've probably got about 10 or so games in the old school cases.

I thought this thread was going to be about Rayman 2 or Ape Escape.

I've never played Jumping Flash, but between the semi-regular praise it gets here and being listed as one of GameSpy's most underrated games makes me want to track down a copy. If only out of curiosity.

So why didn't we see another first person platformer until Metroid Prime?

I loved JF!, but never got the chance to play the 2nd or 3rd, did anyone play them? If so, are they as good as the first one?

Jumping Flash - Awesome
Jumping Flash 2 - Good
Robbit Mon Dieu (JF3) - Ok

I loved the first one. The 2nd was pretty good but not quite up to the standard set by the first one, IMO. I've only played about a half hour of the 3rd one but it seemed about on par with number 2.

Am I living in a bizzaro world? I thought the graphics were painful looking, and the game was far too short. I owned this game around launch, beat it in a weekend, and resold it back to a music store for credit.

The demo was a blast, and initially sold me on the game. I really felt it was just average. Barely any enemies on the screen, a few tricky jumps, and that was it. Meh.

Yeah, played the hell out of this game; it was one of my favs in the early PSX lineup. Sadly, you're right; it hasn't aged well, mostly due to the low-poly enemy models, repetative textures and sub-par framerate. I wonder how it would do on ePSXe?

Already answered.

Ghost in the Shell.

The underrated list is spot on but the overrated list is like..wtf?

Super Mario Sunshine? Overrated? More like underrated. Everyone says that game is shit when it's one of the most underrated platformers this generation.

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness? wtf? People HATE Tomb Raider. How is that game overrated? Noone likes that shyt.

Metal Gear Solid 2? .... They're kidding me right? MGS2 is underrated, by far, simply because people always say,"Oh man, I didn't like MGS2. The gameplay was awesome but the story was like,"wtf?"", oh you mean you didn't GET the story. Try demo theatre sonny.

FFVII and the others like Enter The Matrix, I agree with though.

Can games selling in the millions really be underrated?

I'm still replaying those games from time to time.
I never forgave Sony for not releasing Jumping Flash 3 in america thought. As anyone played it? I'm curious to know if it rules like the first 2 games in the series.

Hint for Sony: NEW JUMPING FLASH PS3 please. tks.

Yes. They're just not overlooked. ICO is a game that got overlooked, but I doubt many will call it underrated, because it's mostly praised. Sometimes to a very high degree.

But who decides they are underrated? As you concede, lots of people get to play them, is there still a special seminar to attend to appreciate a game for its rightful quality?

Yes. Didn't you receive your invitation?

If a game recieved scored indicating an average game (~50%) while I found that the game was great fun and worth more, then I would consider that game to be underrated.

If a person states that they believe a game is underrated, then to them (at the least) it is...regarding the quality of the game, who would know this better than the player? Let all proffessional opinions be damned.

Who cares about professional opinions? If a game gets the spotlight few games ever get and still fails to set the gaming on fire, then I'd say this game is overrated. If you and a few misguided gamers feel otherwise then your game is a cult favorite at best.

Saying games like MGS2 or SMS are underrated is an insult to the hundreds of games out there who truly remain obscure and largely unplayed.

Jumping Flash rocked. Few other games have been able to induce the feeling of vertigo so well. My wife got sick just watching me play. :D
