Trump’s Travel Ban to Be Replaced by Restrictions Tailored to Certain Countries

Could go into effect on Sunday.

New York Times said:
WASHINGTON — President Trump’s ban on travelers from six majority-Muslim countries is set to be replaced as soon as this weekend with more targeted restrictions on visits to the United States that would vary by country, officials familiar with the plans said on Friday.

The new restrictions, aimed at preventing security threats from entering the United States, could go into effect on Sunday after the conclusion of a 90-day policy review undertaken as part of the administration’s original travel ban. Though the restrictions would differ for each country, people living in the targeted nations could be prevented from traveling to the United States or could face increased scrutiny as they seek to obtain a visa.

As part of the review, administration officials said that the Department of Homeland Security initially identified more than six nations that were failing to comply with security standards that could block terrorists from entering the United States. Officials notified the governments in those nations that travel to the United States could be severely restricted if they did not increase those standards. It was not clear which countries would be targeted under the new restrictions or exactly how many would be affected.

In the end, officials said that some of those countries added measures to improve security for passports and to better identify potential terrorist threats. Those countries will not be included in the new restrictions, said the officials, who would not be named describing the policy ahead of its announcement.

A spokesman from the Department of Homeland Security declined to discuss specifics of the agency’s recommendation to the White House, which was delivered in recent days and first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

So what happens to EXTREME VETTING?

So I wonder which countries it'll be... I'm sure we'll be able to detect a pattern regardless.

GAF: Horrified if Trump follows through on his campaign promises, equally dissatisfied if Trump doesn't follow through with his campaign promises.

I think you are misreading those posts. Making it clear that Trump doesn't know what he is doing is not the same as being dissatisfied that he didn't do it.

E.g. what he should have done from the beginning. Nothing wrong with taking a closer look at people coming in from known hotbeds of terrorism, but you have to implement it in a manner that doesn't impede people's human right to movement otherwise.

Don't know whether I will be dodging this drama. British for all circumstances but I do have Pakistani heritage and could easily see that making the list. Ah well, will see what happens.

They are both basically calling out Trump for bullshitting his way through the campaign.

They're calling him out for making campaign promises that were unconstitutional.

Exactly. Narrowly tailor it to countries with weak security and add additional screening. Call it EXTREME VETTING if you want. But this is what should have been done from the beginning and no one would have complained.

This Gaf guy just hates Trump no matter what he does huh? Poor guy Trump just doesn't deserve it.

More like they can be happy he didn't succeed and at the same time laugh at him for failing but see what you want.

They lifted it because they hadn't ruled on it yet. It's a perfectly reasonable move.

Leaving it in place until they ruled would've also been a perfectly reasonable move. And I do think lifting it shows their initial impression was that the ban had some legal merit.

But bottom line is I think the assertion "the Supremes were going to strike the whole thing down" sounds... optimistic. I'd love to see something indicating that, because right now the only shred of evidence I'm aware of hinting at their opinion is that they lifted the injunction.

Sure, no argument here. Truth is we have no idea how they’ll rule.

More like laughing at him cos he can't shit done.

This! Every rotten thing he believes he can get done that fails only pile the "Ls" in his corner. He is a man who claims to be the best for our nation, so seeing someone who thinks so highly of themselves and up their own ass with their self-importance failing (especially a someone as rotten to the core as Trump)... it feels GOOD.

NYT: New Order Bars Almost All Travel From Seven Countries
WASHINGTON — President Trump on Sunday issued a new order banning almost all travel to the United States from seven countries, including most of the nations covered by his original travel ban, citing threats to national security posed by letting their citizens into the country.

Starting next month, most citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea will be indefinitely banned from entering the United States, Mr. Trump said in a proclamation released Sunday night. Citizens of Iraq and some groups of people in Venezuela who seek to visit the United States will face restrictions or heightened scrutiny.

Mr. Trump’s original travel ban, which caused chaos at airports earlier this year and set off a furious legal challenge to the president’s authority, expired on Sunday even as the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments about its constitutionality on Oct. 10. The new bans will take effect Oct. 18.
Mr. Trump’s original travel ban prevented all travel from citizens of seven countries: Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Iraq was later removed from a second version of the travel ban in March after American officials said it had improved its ability to screen passengers and share information with the United States.

Homeland Security officials had described the previous ban as a temporary pause on travel from certain countries to allow for the review of security measures.

By contrast, the new travel restrictions will be in place indefinitely, officials said. The United States will consider lifting the restrictions on those countries affected only if they meet the new minimum standards, they said.

WaPo: Trump administration changes travel ban countries
The Trump administration announced new restrictions Sunday on visitors from eight countries — an expansion of the pre-existing travel ban that has spurred fierce legal debates over security, immigration and discrimination.

Officials had said they wanted the new rules to be both tough and targeted. The move comes as the key portion of President Trump’s travel ban, which bars the issuance of visas to citizens of six majority-Muslim countries, is set to expire.

“These restrictions are necessary and conditions-based, not time-based,” a senior administration official said.

The new travel restrictions represent the third version offered by the Trump administration.

Three new nations were added to the list of countries whose citizens will face the restrictions: Chad, North Korea and Venezuela — although the restrictions on Venezuela target that country’s leadership and family members. One country, Sudan, fell off the travel ban list issued at the beginning of the year. Senior administration officials said a review of Sudan’s cooperation with their national security concerns and information-sharing showed that it was appropriate to remove the nation from the list.
The ban on citizens of the six countries was to last 90 days; the ban on refugees was to last 120 days. The refugee ban is set to expire Oct. 24, and it was not immediately clear what impact the new restrictions might have on it.

Of course he's used the anthem controversy to slip this one in.
Did he add Venezuela to the "restricted entry" list to deflect from accusations that it's a Muslim ban?

Stupid, unfair, racist. An Iranian hasn't perpetrated an attack on American soil since who knows when. Most of the Iranians who emigrate here are well-educated and integrate flawlessly.

But now my family can't visit or keep emigrating here because something something "terrorism." Feels awful.

I can only offer you all my sympathies. I wish all of Trumps family would get shipped to an under priveledged country and not be allowed back so he could understand what that feels like.

Not to give him empathy for your situation, but because it would be fucking just.

I wonder if they just put up a world map, blindfolded themselves, and threw darts to decide the "non-Muslim" countries for the ban.

I'm pretty sure dissatisfied is not the right word, its closer to the intersection of relief & amusement.

Edit; Nvm, didn't realize he's just arbitrarily adding coubtries to this bew travel ban.

You guys do realize the original set of restrictions was set to be lifted on Sunday anyway right? It was a 90-day ban, now it's being expanded to include more countries. It's not being "replaced" in any sense, just expanded:

So no, it has nothing to do with being afraid of losing in the Supreme Court. It's merely because it was set to expire anyway.
