But McConnell apparently talked him out of it. It'd be the one saving grace of his dumpster fire of a presidency, but McConnell was like "lol. Nope". Probably because no Republican would ever win the White House again. God I fucking hate Mitch McConnell.
I mean Trump isn't a dictator. The Electoral College would require a constitutional amendment to fix.

Also yes they would still win. There hasn't been a long period of presidential dominance by one party in quite a while.

Kind of has. Republicans have only won a single presidential popular vote since the 90s.

And that was with an incumbent.

The GOP lost the popular vote in 6 of the past 7 elections. The two most recent Republican presidents entered office without winning it.

The EC isn't going anywhere.

Way easier to rig the popular vote than the electoral college. You just have to trample on enough people nationwide. Electoral college you'd have to do it in way more places.

This is probably all because of his massive insecurity surrounding the popular vote; he's delusional but clearly highly competetive in nature.

Normally I would agree but because Trump I'm suspicious of his intent
He's probably dumb enough to shot himself in the foot this way, he probably only got the election partially because his team took away his Twitter in the lead up to election day. Had he had that he probably would've reversed whatever damage Comey's letter did to Clinton because him being an ass would flood the headlines yet again.

If by that you mean giving the presidency to the less popular candidate then yeah, but why would anyone want that
Like I said, it's obviously very flawed. I just don't think popular vote is a perfect solution to the problem either. I wish it was, because it's by far most appealing choice, but it could lead to even worse things than trump in certain situations.

And it'll be replaced by Trump College*.

*Trump College is in no way affiliated with Trump University, which is a great success and in no way scammed many people out of their money.

If nothing so far hasn't convinced you that Trump doesn't know what the fuck he's doing or lives in this reality this should be it. It's literally the only reason he's where he is and the only reason he might stay there four years from now. Yeah it would be great, but this dude is so delusional that he probably really thinks he could win reelection without it.

I find this really concerning.

I don't think even Trump is delusional enough to believe he actually won the popular vote, so this says to me that he wants to take strong enough measures in the future to sort out the "bad" votes that cost him the popular vote to ensure that he would, in fact, win the popular vote. Getting rid of the electoral college would be an ego-stroking decision, so he can say he even won after abolishing that electoral college liberals were complaining about. Remove any excuse for people not to accept his presidency, that sort of thing.

I feel like people always forget that the EC has a huge role in having minority votes heard at all
Like it's obviously very flawed, but...

People living in small states aren't really "minorities"; they tend to not be actually.

And they mostly vote against their own best interests too.

Yes, let's encourage Trump to amend the constitution for the purposes of permanently altering the way elections work. That couldn't go wrong at all.

Only time the popular vote has not matched the electoral college vote in the last century was Trump and Bush W. The senate already gives more than enough power to land, all the electoral college does is punish voters for living in bigger states or states that aren't swing states.

Yeah, that's a fair point.

It would take an amendment and the Republicans have just made huge gains in the EC to swipe an election, they would have never ratified it.

McConnell talked him out of it.

...for now.

They "talked him out of" pursuing this popular vote bullshit at one time, too.

He is going to fuck himself and his party pushing for this.

Let him

trump/congress relationship so far reminds me of when i was elected school president in jr high and everything i suggested was rewarded with a pat on the head

I mean, Trump appears to believe he won the popular vote. Maybe this really appears to him as something that'd be in his best interest. Somehow.
