TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

This is what Brad Shoemaker from Giant Bomb had to say about a majority of GAF after this topic came up.

"GAF has such a hard-on to see the Xbox One fail, I'd reserve judgement. Place is full of frothing Sony fans."

Why are people annoyed at this comment? Its true, we want them to fail, I want them to fail, everything they have shown its nothing but innovation in the field of publisher dickery and the transparent atempts to hide this makes them a bigger target. The reserve judgement thing is stupid tho, after the reveal Sessler asked us to reserve our judgement and look how that worked out for him:

Adam Sessler ‏@AdamSessler 19h
This is the best part of pre-E3. Calls canceling demos and appointments. Time to invest in Pepcid.

i for one don't want MS to fail...I own and use both my PS3 and 360 regularly...idk how I would rate my experience this generation without both consoles sitting under my TV...too many good games on both systems...

I don't however like MS' current plan as it does not align with my needs/wants as a gamer...

As for the Sony fanboys being "youngsters" that grew up when Sony dominated the industry...what about the true "youngsters" that are currently growing up in the "xbox" generation?...Even though the PS3 has surpassed the 360 in worldwide sales the attitude towards the two is very different in North America where MS has its strong hold..

as a middle school teacher (yeah yeah im posting on GAF during a free period) my students (11-13 years old) are completely blinded by their loyalty to MS and the 360...

I'm not even surprised at what GB are saying after seeing their other coverage on the Xbox one, only more surprised as to why people respect them.

I don't mind people observing however accurately that lots of people on the board want the thing to fail; that much is evident. The second part of the statement is why you should be upset. It presupposes that the reason "GAF" wants it to fail is because of rabid fanboyism and not because of any rational belief or conceit. It's bullshit, but it's not unsurprising.

edit: His newer post is just bizarre to me. I guess he would say he does not have fierce brand loyalty to Microsoft.
Zing.

I'm having trouble remembering but wasn't there an official GAF poll a couple of years ago and Nintendo got the most votes.

And there is a tendency to view message boards as a like-minded herd when in fact it is just different groups of people posting in threads they are interested in. So when Sony is having positive news more Sony fans will be posting than normal, and the same for any company. Its like saying GAF is a bunch of RPG fanboys when a new FF is announced. No, it is just that rpg fans have something to talk about with each other at that particular moment in time.

I don't know if it's funny or sad that despite all the negative XBO talk, at least there's talk at all, it's like the Wii U doesn't even exist on GAF.

Wii U talk has been all over GAF for weeks (most of it doom and gloom). It's just been recently that it's disappeared because we're finally getting closer to more info with the PS4 and MS has been in meltdown mode since the reveal.

Personally I'm getting sick of people calling out "GAF" as if we all have the same opinion. Such a easy/lazy way to dismiss all the good arguments getting put forth.

Brad also posted this:

People who are against Xbone's horrid DRM policies are just Sony youngsters who don't know any better!

That comment was made in response to this thread, and as someone who have no idea who CBoaT is it seemed crazy to me that so many people jumped on this against MS when it feels purely like speculation to me.

Hr clarified his response to the DRM in a video.

So I suppose they can't just lock certain parts of the ESRAM like they do with GPU cores. There would probably be some sort of compatibility issues(different systems having to use different memory address.) Or can they play around with the bus, memory controller or kernel, to auto adjust memory address?

What are all the known options right now? Face shortages, down clock GPU, get rid of ESRAM all together...?

He's not wrong. We had two thread in the last three weeks on how people should go out and educate the poor masses to the horror that the Xbone will bring to the world. Come on.

Indeed. I tend to agree with Brad's comments, and I'll probably main the PS4 next gen due to the superior hardware, though I'll get an X1 eventually after it's been on the market for a few years.

I've been on GAF for years now, and I've always thought the forum was pro-Sony/PC. There always been an anti-XBL (where bashing Gold subscribers is common) pop up every month or so, and the NPD threads were always a joy to read due to the meltdowns of X360 selling more. If GAF was ever pro-X360, then it had to be before I started lurking around 2007 or so.

Man I don't think so really. I know i'm a junior but I have been lurking for a while. It just seems like these practices are so against what most people on these forums are for. I mean we have collecting threads for old consoles with people still playing classic games. With the x1 that is completely gone now. No more playing this system once they stop supporting it. With steam it's at least easy enough to crack some of these games to work offline after you have bought them and steam isn't the only means of distribution on the pc platform.

I was a microsoft supporter from day 1 with the xbox 1 and 360 on launch and even live on launch day. However the past 2-3 years they have been pushing towards this kinect centered casual stuff. Me and my wife both played 360 and her family had one our friends so we could all play together online and party chat etc. Now it just looks like MS is abandoning us and i'm really not impressed.

Is there any contest? As Hix and Bish both said, CBoaTs stuff could still be true despite what MN said....so #TeamCBoaT

Plus....CBoaT is awesome. :)

All objectivity is lost in your perspective.

CBOAT's whole motivation like other MS insiders that are slipping information is to hopefully wake the suits up and bring positive change. He isn't on a witch hunt for no reason he is hoping this storm brings about sunnier days.

I really hope that's true but at this stage they would have to really fix the yield issue and upgrade whatever hardware they can and fast!

Actually I kind of want that to be the case and for them just to chuck more power at the thing and take a larger loss on the hardware.

GAF is not pro-Sony. It just has a lot of non-US members. This place has a clash of cultures.

US Xbox owners have NO idea what it's like to own an Xbox elsewhere. The services are SO bad, so minimal. It is a completely different experience. So yes, there's more negativity involved because we pay the Gold fee for a totally different experience.

It is not fanboyism to express disgust. It is not hypocritical to still want to play games.

Oh come on, nobody's happy they pay for Gold. It's something people are forced to pay for if they want online. Even I feel like a dumbass having to pay up for it; I'm paying for them to shove adverts in my face.

If gamer's are lukewarm on Microsoft lately it's because they're fed up of their shitty business practices. I was a huge 360 fan for most of this generation.

I'm not sure if it's just numbers; it's more likely sony fans are more vocal. Also, just because people are bashing XB1 does not mean they are sony fans. I like my Xbox and all that, but if XB1 does what the Wire confirmed them to be doing, I physically cannot support them. I don't have the internet
(or the numbness to my rights)
to be able to use it. That makes me mad, because I still believe there's a good chance some of those 15 games are going to be good.

I think we should just stop talking about Brad and his comments. Let's get back on topic.

Ups, just saw that.

I think we should just stop talking about Brad and his comments. Let's get back on topic.

Agreed.

Can we imagine that multiplatform publishers will target a 30fps for Xbone as the main system? Hence instead of getting better graphics on the PS4... we will instead see 60fps?

THat would not be too horrible to be honest.

I have been on GAF since the Dreamcast days (around 1999) and this is not accurate. There is no pro Sony majority, there are fans of all systems here and whichever system has bad news at the time is piled on. If you were here when the $599 PS3 price was announced you would have seen that Sony was savaged on this messageboard and was mocked for awhile until they dropped their price and released more exclusive games.

I think he got banned for being a jerk to a junior.

No i don't think so.

He was in many threads covering MS ass. When perfect shitstorm hit out boards he again started to say that people should move on or something like that. He probably wasn't viral but he was strongly biased beyond hope. Same as FordGTGuy who also graced this thread trying to spin things around.

I wonder how many bans there were in last 24 hours. It is/was bloodbath.

after E3 Bish need to post some stats after killing spree. Just for lolz and maybe this will teach people to look at junior members post history before trying to reply.

I saw ton of people falling for virals responding with walls of text.

Brad Shoemaker should stick to shoe making, amiright? Huh? Eh?

Guys?

I think people want anti-consumer practices and their proponents to fail, not any particular console...

I really want the Xbone to succeed. I'm not really interested in the Sony console in the sense I need that I need them to sell it to me. Their software output has already convinced me. I didn't bother watching the Sony reveal but rather just watched the highlights. With Microsoft's I watched the whole thing.

But, I want Microsoft to succeed in a way that makes me want to join the party. By selling it to me. I want them to deliver the awesome platform they're capable of building but refuse. I'm starting to feel that they're the Capcom of consoles. Great potential for their properties but refusing to make the best of them.

I want it to fail because it's an overall piece of shit product, that on top of that is pushing an anti consumer agenda. So yeah I don't want it to succeed, I want consumers to make MS pay for what they are trying to do. Hell I'm glad they are having yield problems, and hopefully they will have many more problems. To that I call Karma.

Before I fell back into PC gaming around 2 years into the 360/PS3 gen, I mained a 360 simply because lol PS3 no games. I wasn't a fanboy for the console, it was just the better choice at the time. Didn't own a PS2 until the launch of the current gen, owned a GameCube instead. I'm all over the map with no "loyalty" (I had Nintendo loyalty, but they utterly destroyed that).

Now, I'd like the following to happen:

1. The WiiU live a short life and get discontinued next year
2. The Xbone to never make it out of the gates

If the PS4 isn't totally anti-consumer like the Xbone and to a much lesser extent (though still present) the WiiU, I hope it rains gold upon Sony. No, not piss.

I'm a PS1-3 owner, so my inclination is towards the PS4, but since the new consoles have little ties to their current ecosystems (no BC, digital content gone) I was open to either system, really looking to hitch my wagon to the most powerful game machine (since I felt like my PS3 in reality wasn't that).

But right now there is no chance I switch to the xbone...BUT should sony end up screwing up just as bad I may just decide to play Planetside 2 on my laptop until it causes my motherboard to melt.

I think the denial from Microsoft indicates that there won't be a clock downgrade. I suppose they could deny the leaked specs and claim the downclock was what was ALWAYS planned but I don't think that will fly.

If they have made the decision just to suck it up and take the bad yields I would expect them to have a very staggered launch with USA a priority and if they can squeeze enough out a very limited number in Europe focussing on the UK.

They need to be competitive though, even people invested in the Xbox ecosystem will not wait if Sony has available stock and is showing core games like FIFA, Madden and CoD with superior graphics. The LowStock=HypeTrain doesn't work unless you have a unique or superior experience.

RE: Down-clocking GPU OP

Xbox_APU.jpg

In the Xbox picture provided by Mistercteam on SemiAccurate above, the power to Kryptos is via a CPU and a GPU power plane (right of the Kryptos chip) and 6 separate but identical bucky phase additive switching regulators; 2-3 for CPU and 3-4 for GPU (need a closeup of the traces). What's puzzling is that it looks like the CPU has a 1/4 or more of the max power the GPU would have. Two jaguar CPU packages should be about 4 watts while a 12 CU GPU should be over 50 watts. ??

Is the CPU side also feeding special chips or mistercteam is correct and there is a big cpu in there we haven't heard about? Could this explain the overheating? In any case the GPU and CPU can be powered separately.

I think this is what makes me most upset about these comments. If you are upset about anti-consumer policies, it automatically makes you a Sony fanboy?

If the Xbone is successful, the way we game will change forever. Goodbye ownership, hello subscriptions to play single player games.

I swear it's like people have an incredibly short term memory. GAF has taken some real hard turns over the years – people were convinced that this was a Microsoft-run forum at the start of last generation.

People are upset over these policies, and Microsoft was the first to speak openly about it. That's all it is –if/when Sony announces the same thing, people will be upset again. Nothing wrong with being hopeful that Sony isn't following suit.

While the second sentence isn't AT ALL the main reason why the first sentence is true... I can't really disagree with the second sentence taken by itself.

But what were we expecting from giantbomb. Shit like that is EXACTLY what I would have expected. Maybe after E3 MSFT will really started getting pounded for this crap (hopefully they won't keep getting a free pass from many, as they are getting now).

I wasn't gonna buy xbone either way (unless the $60 yearly price for Live included NFL sunday ticket), but if MSFT is able to "get away" with this garbage it's bad for gaming on the whole without a doubt.

I think this is one of the evidences that GAF is one of the more objective communities in gaming. A large group of us are judging these companies with a 'what have you done for me lately' attitude and lately, MS aren't doing us any favors.

Who's Brad?

An individual part of an organization I had hoped would have the integrity to fight for the rights of their users and call anyone out on their bullshit practices. You know, use the platform like you're actually press and not simply 3rd party PR. Instead they just say, "Oh it's Steam" and ignore the reasons why people choose consoles over PC/Steam to begin with. Didn't think I'd see the day where I had more respect for what Jim Sterling was doing than GB's coverage.

Sorry for the slight derail Kev. This will be my only comment on it. Back to the potential downclocking!

What overheating ? Rumor is about yields not that it is overheating. Low yields doesn't mean it is overheating

Kind of. When the yield is lower, a lot of the bad chips will still "work" much of the time. Until you get the temperature up. Then they start failing. So in a manner of speaking they are "overheating", just at a lower temp than the "good" chips.

MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One, RUMOR: downclocking GPU

You normally downclock because of heat issues. Why would you lower the clock for a smaller than predicted yield (less than 32 meg good eSRAM). Edit: prag16's post is a possible but I wouldn't want to buy a Xbox one with that chip because hot spots tend to erode and expand. Running at a slower clock can just increase the time to failure.
