So I started tutoring this week. I figure I need some volunteering on my resume, and the girl running the whole thing is a good friend of mine, so I told her I'd help her out last year.
Anyway, I've always been against volunteering. Well, not against it, but, why volunteer when you can get paid for your time? The only things I've really volunteered for are Sri Lankan things which I've been more or less forced to do, plus my friends were there anyway so no biggie. Past that, just hosting a volleyball team (Sr. Girls ) in high school for a tourny we had, which was actually really fun.
But tutoring is different. A lot of tutors get paid, but, the kids I'm tutoring are less fortunate. Well, not impoverished, but they've recently immigrated to Canada from (usually) third world countries, and are all ESL students. So of course, I don't care about the money in this case. Regardless, initially I just wanted something nice on my resume other than working everywhere.
So I had my first session this Wednesday. I helped this girl Achok from Sudan (she's in gr. 12 taking gr. 10 courses) with her social work, and wow, I really feel good about helping her. I feel bad for her, that she had to come to Canada, or did, and is trying to learn English. I prefer these kids to the spoiled youths you can find anywhere, because they have respect and appreciation for all things in general, y'know? I feel good helping her with her reading and understanding, it's really cool.
I sorta wish I started volunteering my time earlier in my life, but definitely for sure for a cause in the same vein as tutoring ESL students. I'd still probably be against volunteering my time for a private organisation or something.
Anyway, anyone else tutor, or have tutored like me? Even though it costs me money, and 2 hours of my time to bus there and back, I'm still all for it.
