TV help needed

This morning when I turned on my TV, I heard a sort of pop and now I only see about 1 inch worth of picture (and it's offcenter or something) while everything above and below it is black as if the tv were off. I've never had a problem with a TV before, so I have no precident but I assume it's the tube that went bad. My question is this, is there anything I can do to fix this type of thing, and would it be more cost effective to just buy an entirely new one than to get it repaired if needed?

Also, what's the typical warranty on a TV? Thanks for any help.

It sounds like something BAD happened to your set.

Obviously, you need to trade off the cost of repair, versus the cost of replacement. If it's a relatively cheap TV ($200-300) and a replacement set would be in the same price range, then I'd guess just replacing it would be the best choice. I assume that a TV repair shop would charge something to evaluate the problem...and that money could be spent towards a new set. On the other hand, if you have an expensive set, the cost of repair could be FAR cheaper than a comparable brand-new set...if it ends up being something which can be fixed.

As for the warranty question: You should be able to look up your particular model at the manufacturer's site to check the warranty terms. However, unless you a) have the receipt or b) registered the product when you bought it, you may have trouble verifying that it IS still under warranty.

What model is it, and how much did you pay for it?

It wasnt terribly expensive (about $225-$250) and it sells for around $180 now it seems. I purchased it in June 2003ish, so the tube is still covered under waranty I found out from the Toshiba site, but I'd have to pay labor costs and all this other bullshit plus as you mentioned, it looks like I'd need the bill of sale.

I guess I have no choice but to buy a new one. :(
