I couldn't come up with a better title for what I'm trying to express, so I hope you guys read the OP.

Last night in my country a semi-famous actor died in a car accident. I didn't even know who he was but I see that his name is on the Trending Topics (it's still there) so the country is mourning him.
Around midnight, a picture of the car crash shows up, with his corpse on the car. It was not gory but it certainly was shocking. A bit of blood on his face and his body is in an awkward bent position, so it's very clear that he's dead. My first thought is that I was surprised that someone took pics in that situation but didn't think much of it. Much to my surprise the picture sparks a HUGE outrage on the people, insulting whoever retweeted it and asking for its censorship.

Me, being a huge internet person (don't know a better term but I'm sure you get what I mean, lol) I'm against any censorship, and since the picture wasn't even gory I couldn't understand it. Sure, people are sad and feel for the guy but I don't see the need to insult everyone who published the link and demonizing the person who upload it. I comment this to a couple of friends and I get the same treatment. I get asked if I don't have any feelings or moral and that the picture it's disrespectful for everyone. They actually got pissed at me for suggesting that the outrage was a bit too much and asking for removal of the picture was ridiculous.

So, my question for GAF is. In situations like this is it OK to ask for censorship of something like that? While I'll admit is a bit unnecessary I still consider the picture to be information, no different that the pic of the car crash itself. I certainly don't appreciate my friends making me feel like I'm the worst person ever because I'm not outraged at the picture.

The bottom line despite any cultural practice or values is that he is dead and therefore could not possibly care what gets posted of him on the internet.

Yes, you have to be a very disrespectful person to take a picture of a dead man and then upload said picture to twitter.

I think it's a lot more about being respectful of the person that died by not passing around a photo of his dead body and less about trying to censor the people on the internet.

I think publicly distributing pictures of a recently dead corpse is in very bad taste.

I wouldn't want pictures banned but I wouldn't be opposed to considering the people that retweet them being as breaking social norms.

uh how bout some respect for the deceased and his friends and family?

I did consider them disrespectful, didn't made that clear on the OP. And I didn't share them because I have fucking common sense.
I guess, my problem is with people making it a huge deal, right now there's more talk about the picture than about the person itself. I just wonder why they didn't ignore them, they just gave it more public light.

Because unless they took the photo or are in the photo or something that actually links them to the incident it's not their issue to be embarrassed or offend by.

Imagine being related to a celebrity and have someone taking a comprising picture of them while alive. You can feel angry about it, but ultimately it's not your issue to deal with.

You're asking... to censor people that are asking for censorship? o.O

People are free to say whatever they want on Twitter. And you're free to ignore it and move on with your life. It's no different from anything else that's ever been on the internet.

It's not against the law, but since they uploaded the photo to twitter, Twitter now owns the rights to that photo. If they find it explicit and maybe used as evidence in some case they can shut it down to the public themselves. But chances are that many people already downloaded that photo in the first place.

It's very cruel to take a picture of a dead person and upload it without anyones consent, but that is the world we live in today.

I don't think it should be censored but it is extremely disrespectful to do something like that. I don't even understand how shit like that enters a person's mind.

Well there's an argument to be had for "the nature of information is to be free, and the internet is a facilitator for that" and everything...

Not sure if I always agree, but there is an argument.

10 years ago that picture would just have ended in a newspaper instead. Don't act like social media makes people more depraved or whatever.
