(CNN) -- Gas prices have plummeted 46 cents a gallon over the past two months, according to a survey released Sunday.

"This has been a true price crash," said Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey.

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.38, down nearly a dime over the past three weeks, Lundberg said.

"This crash began back when refining problems around the country were being fixed, one after the other, at the same time that our seasonal gasoline demand was shrinking," she said.

Crude oil prices have also dropped after having risen steadily.

Prices at the pump should drop even more in the coming days, as refiners cut how much they're charging distributors and retailers, Lundberg said.

The national average is about 8 cents higher than the average a year ago.

The survey tallies prices at thousands of gas stations nationwide.

Long Island, New York, had the highest average in the latest survey, at $3.85. The lowest average was in Memphis, Tennessee, at $3.04.

Here are average prices in some other cities:

• Boston - $3.59

• Baltimore - $3.34

• Atlanta - $3.27

• Baton Rouge, Louisiana• - $3.11

• St. Louis - $3.05

• Salt Lake City - $3.40

• Los Angeles - $3.68

It's £1.30 a litre in the UK right now. Thats about £4.90

That's about $7.90 for a US gallon.

Was at £1.33 a week ago. Hopefully the drop continues.

Conversly of course, my job is only 20 miles away and my car does 35-45 miles to a UK gallon.

So a full tank at £71 does me around 350-400 miles.

And I have public transport I can use to get to work.

I can't recall gas being under $1.00, but I lived in the Bay Area. I remember it being like $1.10 when I was 12 or so, like 1997.

But movie tickets then were like $3.25 for a matinee as well.

Fuck New York State, regular gas here is 3.76 at BJ's (membership price) and over 3.80 at non-membership stations.

A month and a half ago it was 4.07 at the same place.

Unlike the US, they have the option of taking efficient public tranit to work. I'd rather be in their shoes. Commuting to work in traffic is usually the worst part of my day. Driving sucks. It's an expense I would happily be rid of.

I got my DL in 1990 and the first time I filled up at the gas station down the street, i paid .95.

I also remember the public outcry and all the doom and gloom when gas went up over $1.00.

A couple weeks ago I drove to Vegas and stopped in Tehachapi to fill up. The sign outside said "$3.76" a gallon. I got up to the pump and found it a whole dollar less....

You better believe I filled up.

The crazy thing is that the time span between gasoline prices being 89¢ in my area (Nassau County, just a smidge East of New York City) and price at the pump flirting with 400¢ was a mere decade or so.

Same, a car would actually be affordable in that scenario, which it definitely isn't with $9/gallon gas. As it stands, I have to rely on unreliable, slow and expensive public transport :/.

It's apparently $7.60 a gallon in Germany for regular right now, so not quite so extreme. Think he might be overestimating the value of the euro, or using UK gallons.

What is the average yearly mileage for a car in the US? In the UK it's around 10,000 miles. Also in the UK people drive smaller and more efficient cars more than they do in the US. As I said, I get around 350-400miles from one tank of fuel.

I work at CNBC in the UK and whenever we have the US presenter talking about a Ford Fiesta or any other small car that is normal in Europe guests and presenters complain that they'll get killed by an 18 wheeler.

Don't forget that in the UK we don't have to pay for health insurance, we don't get billed for receiving text messages or for being taken to hospital in an ambulance. So what you save on fuel is offset by those other costs and the fact that on average a US car does more miles per year as you guys are all spread out.
