If Sony can hurry up and launch in Japan first, then it can easily overtake the 360, which in turn would kind of pull back all that Japanese developer support the 360 is getting back to the PS3 only, putting Sony again in the same position they were this generation.
Because here's a theory that I don't think too many people think about. If a system is already out, like the 360, and you're a developer who wants to make a game and release it this year, you still have a better chance of higher sales on that system's prezent userbase, than on the system that you know will eventually lead the market. Because your game is coming out this year, not when that system achieves that userbase. Of ocurse this doesn't apply to games you would want to build as franchises(which is the reason why companies like Square are STILL going to put games like FF on te PS3 rather than 360), but if you want a quick one time only sales boost, you'd put it on the 360. The thing is, that game might be really good and it might be really popular which in turn would make the 360 gain popularity even in Japan and Sony can't really afford to do that knowing they'll have an uphill battle in the US this time around. That's why they're launching in Japan first as quickly as possible. They know the 360 will be succesfull here but they also know they can kill it in Japan if they launch early enough and jump ahead of it with some huge titles like FF. That's what they're doing.
Think about it...if the PS3 comes out only 3 months after the 360 in Japan and announce titles like FF offline and the next DragonQuest...it's going to crush it pretty easily. If they waited to launch in Japan later......they would have to fight it and kill it. It would still win but not as easily as in one easy strike. It would still give it a fighting chance, small as it may be. This way they don't have to worry about it.
"In Spring of 2006, XBox 360 will have the greatest market penetration in the US, followed by Europeand then Japans dismal showing."
As for Europe don't bet on Sony having the same advantage this time around....I have a feeling it will be a lot closer there as well. Even the first Xbox's line-up was liked by Europe. MS made some big screw-ups with the launch of the Xbox there, that hopefully won't repeat.
