Description & Features

UFO 50 is a collection of 50 single and multiplayer games from the creators of Spelunky, Downwell, Air Land & Sea, Skorpulac, Catacomb Kids, and Madhouse. Jump in and explore a variety of genres, from platformers and shoot 'em ups to puzzle games and RPGs. Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities.

50 BRAND NEW GAMES - These are NOT minigames or microgames! Although the size of each game varies, every one is a complete experience, from its opening title screen to its ending credits. Some are small arcade-style games but there are also larger open-world adventures and a JRPG that could take many hours to beat.

AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE - According to the story of UFO 50, the games were all created by a fictional 80s video game company that was obscure but ahead of its time. Some games are sequels to other games in the collection and various characters appear in multiple titles as part of a shared continuity.

AN INSTANT LIBRARY - All 50 games are available to play at the start! The concept was inspired by multicarts, retro collections, and the experience of going to a friend's house and perusing their game library. Jump in and out of games at a whim - exploring the collection is part of the fun!

AUTHENTIC BUT ALSO MODERN - We carefully chose what elements to modernize. Every game shares a unique 32-color palette and we took great efforts to make them look and sound like actual 8-bit titles from the 80s. On the other hand, it was important to us that UFO 50 was fun and surprising for modern players, so we chose not to limit ourselves to the genres and design conventions of the past.

VERSUS AND CO-OP PLAY - Half of the collection features local multiplayer, including co-op and versus. You can compete head-to-head in a new fighting or strategy game... or team up to beat a classic arcade game from an alternate timeline. It's great for groups!

History

As kids, Derek Yu and Jon Perry used Klik & Play to release a number of freeware games as Blackeye Software, culminating with Eternal Daughter in 2002. Fast-forward to 2016 and they wanted to make another video game together... but what game? At first, the idea was to "warm up" by making some small prototypes in GameMaker, but that idea quickly evolved into making a collection of small games instead... 50 small games, to be exact! (But as it turned out, the games wouldn't end up being that "small"...)

Soon after, they invited Eirik Suhrke to join the UFO 50 project - Suhrke and Yu had previously worked together on the roguelike platformer Spelunky, with Suhrke in charge of the music and audio for the game. Together, the three brainstormed 50 games, the majority of which made their way into the final collection. Other game concepts were contributed by Ojiro Fumoto (Downwell) during the half-year he spent on the team, as well as Paul Hubans, who directed the horror adventure game Night Manor. The final member added to the core UFO 50 team was Tyriq Plummer, the creator of the roguelike platformer Catacomb Kids, who ended up co-directing several of the collection's largest games, including the first person dungeon crawler Valbrace. Although there has been specialization, the entire team has contributed design, writing, artwork, and programming to the project and have worked on each others' games, sometimes extensively.

In 2020, Suhrke and Yu took some time away from UFO 50 to release Spelunky 2, realizing that the ambitious concept of UFO 50 needed extra time to cook. Finally, at Summer Game Fest 2024, the team announced that the collection would be coming to Steam on September 18th, 9 years since the idea had first been conceived! The result was even more wild than any of them could have imagined...

I got this game today and have been floored. Jaw dropped by the scope and vision of what is here. I've played only 9 games so far but 4 of them are ones I have to complete.

I'm talking full blown dragon quest RPGs, metroidvanias, dungeon crawlers, and more.

This is a must play for everyone on this website.

Nice OT. I'm hoping for a Switch 2 patch/release in the future as I complete some other stuff in the meantime.

But I'll definitely pick this up when I get the time.

Yes. Fantastic collection. I've only tried half of the games.

It is a shame though when you first log into the collection the first game on the menu is one of the more obscure and clunky ones.

It is on switch. You don't need a switch 2 version. It's 8 bit games lol.

I know, but I think increased and/or correct resolution can still make quite a difference - even in these types of games. I assume it runs 720p in handheld since that's the max Switch (1) capacity, which would mean it'd get stretched out to 1080p on Switch 2 and not look all that great.

But I'm not going to actively wait for it, I'll just buy the version that's available whenever I get to it.

Glad to see more people finally coming to realize how a cool game this one is.

What won it last year? The only thing better than this is animal well of recent indie games I've played.
Balatro...which whatever. I know people will disagree with me there...I played that game a lot also, and what I discovered is Balatro is not a good game, it's just addicting.

My fave so far is the goldfish submarine game.
And the diver rpg game.

Also balatro is the best

Valbrace is my favorite game in here so far.

Absolutely this idea should be expanded upon by another indie dev. This is the dungeon crawling twist the genre has needed unless it already exists? Action combat in encounters instead of turn based.

I also love pilot quest too. Came back to 200 ingots farmed today to finally build up my town of workers more. Nice!

How are you guys doing? I haven't played in a while but this thread makes me want to go back to it, still got many cherries and golden disks to unlock!

Valbrace is a gem! Bought the game just for the premise of that one and didn't regret it.

FUNK THAT! I'm going to rely on that manual like I did in the 80's!
What manual

I don't think they release the guide until February

They warn before spoilers and I usually tune out before they get in spoiler territory as half the fun is figuring out what the hell you're even supposed to do in a game

Then again, I've only listened to like two episode episodes so take that with a grain of salt

You nailed it. I'm getting the special edition physical.
woo hoo ric flair GIF

Nice, I'm glad we're talking about it.

I've ordered the big ass deluxe edition

Payday this week I think I'm doing the same for pre order.
It's a late release, I might even buy a digital copy.

I think the deluxe is worth it, I'm sure they're quite limited. I would go for it if I were you

Maybe I'm wrong too 😅 but one thing is sure is it's a cool looking box

This game is spectacular! I'm going in chronological order and I've really liked (or at least appreciated) just about every one so far. And I still have plenty to go. Mortal, Bushido Ball, Bug Hunter and Magic Garden are some early highlights for me but I love how everyone has their own tastes and favorites. I ordered the physical bundle too, it's just too good a game to pass up.

I did the same thing. This game is worthy of a double dip.

Finally played all 50. Imagine my surprise when Golfaria or whatever was an rpg/zelda like as a golf ball lmao. 😂

Still working on pilot quest everyday.

Is pilot quest the RPG?
Pilot quest you play as pilot (guy in my avatar), who crashes on a planet. You have a crystal in your town you farm for shards, and you have a yoyo.

You slowly build up your town and use meat to explore the wilds for treasure and secrets. If you get hit you lose time to explore and you only have 60 seconds per meat. Getting hit takes off 30?

It's a cool little game. When you come back to it even days later it remembers how much your towns folk have farmed so you can come back to a lot of ingots etc to keep progressing.

[I copy this over here from the other thread. I'd rather have it in the OT]

wow
This game is something else.

I usually am not a retro gamer, every time I dabble in something like it, I tend to get enough of it after a couple of minutes or an hour, which is a shame, but what can I do?

The first game I ever played was Monster in my pocket on the NES and I am hooked ever since. But over the years, I guess I'm spoiled by refined game mechanics, intricate stories and even visuals to some degree.
I tried to play through Terranigma, but gave up again after about halfway. Tried some stuff through the Emulators Nintendo provides through their online service, but that's usually a quick affair and ends with me deleting them from the system.

But here comes UFO 50. I have about 10 hours and tested roughly 40 of the 50 games, but there are some that I definitely want to dig in more:

Barbuta
Velgress
Planet Zoldath
Mooncat
Party House
Overbold
Valbrace
Grimstone
Pilot Quest
Mini & Max

Planet Zoldath and Pilot Quest alone will give me much more playtime than I imagined the whole collection will provide someone like me. Party House is surprisingly addictive, as is Velgress (though frustrating to always have to restart from scratch, but I can understand that design decision). Barbuta is a beast of its own, very relaxing and even funny, sometimes. Mooncat as a spiritual successor is cerebral in its controls, I like it. Infinite lifes for this one was the right call. Mini & Max reminds me of old times and Grimstone I'm not yet sure on, but I'll play some more to decide if I get deeper into it.

The work they've done over the years to design, refine and polish all of these games in the collection is mind blowing. The meta narrative is something I really enjoy, but I've not been able to dig into the terminal myself, just know that there is something more there, but I don't want to spoil myself, yet.

To anyone playing already, have fun... and anyone that is on the fence. Get this game, you (probably) won't regret it.
Masterpiece

I think it'd be really really rare that out of 50 games someone can't find one that is a gem they appreciate.

I'll wait until I feel like I've had my fill of the game before looking into the meta story here. Definitely interested.

Thank you. I've actually played that one a bit. I've just been stabbing at the games trying to find the RPG lol.

does it run the same on PC vs Switch?

Just trying to decide where I should buy it
It runs & plays fine on both they are not demanding games however the pc version has properly working scanlines. The switch version they weren't implemented properly so they are unevenly spaced and look janky as hell however the devs said they are working on fixing everything. However the games look ok with the scanlines off but it depends on how much that matters to you.

I'd say if you're not fussed about playing on the go just get pc version.

I think the scan-line issue is more a Switch 2 problem. The Switch 2 expands the 720 screen of the original Switch into a 1080 screen, so 2D games get some uneven pixel stretching happening. This is more noticeable with the scan-line effect. I'm not sure if it's something that's fixable unless they have a version that specifically runs on the Switch 2 maybe?

The good news is that this is the perfect handheld game so I really don't mind.

I absolutely agree. There is so much variety and genres, there's bound to be something to connect with. The games I listed might be bad for someone that appreciates all the stuff I don't care for 🤷‍♂️
This is a really rare treat that won't be replicated in the near future.
