Hasbro Press Release:

HASBRO UNVEILS NEW LOOK AND SCALE FOR G.I. JOE BRAND
Feb 18, 2005

G.I. JOE Returns to TV With All-New Animated Series Debuting this Fall

When Hasbro created the action figure category more than 40 years ago, it immediately ignited the imaginations of kids and forever changed the way boys play. Now, after 40 years, Hasbro’s G.I. JOE brand is reinventing the category it created with the introduction of G.I. JOE SIGMA SIX, a new line of action figures featuring an all-new 8-inch scale and weekly, animated series to debut this September.

The initial offering of G.I. JOE SIGMA SIX action figures brings the action of this newly formed G.I. JOE covert mission force and will feature several of the most popular G.I. JOE characters including: Duke, Snake eyes, Heavy Duty, SPIRIT IRON-KNIFE and the C.O.B.R.A. ninja STORM SHADOW. Each figure will be fully articulated and will come with their signature gear, as seen on the animated series. (Approximate Retail Price: $14.99; Recommended Age: 5 & up; Available: Fall 2005)

Additionally, the G.I. JOE SIGMA SIX line will feature the NINJA LIGHTNING CYCLE, a motorcycle that changes into a hovercraft. (Approximate Retail Price: $14.99; Recommended Age: 5 & up; Available: Fall 2005)

Lessee, what else... Studio Gonzo is doing the cartoon, and the old GI Joe action figure lines (12" and 3 3/4") are being shelved. This is the new face of GI Joe. Then TToB and I talked about the articulation for a bit, and a buncha people came in and said it's SOOOOOOOOOOO F*CKIN' EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEME! Somehow Ghostbusters got worked into the thread, too. Then the forum blew up.

I think that's it. :)

ninjas killed the comic book, oh larry, you were my most favourite writer until issue 80+ and then you died.

faceless master anyone?

Hmmm snake eyes looks ok, but the figures look a bit crap.

gonzo eh..

the figures look kinda metal gearish to me.. and do we really need two ninjas?
One's a good guy, the other isa bad guy.
And they'll be sticking in more GI Joes into the line.
There will be a core group of six members and a rotating crew of additional GI Joe members.

I really like Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, and maybe other Cobra figures (because their designs are always great). It's a shame they're 9inches, because there are no other 9 inch figures out in the market.
What really sucks though is that Toy Biz is now doing a 1/18th scale Marvel toyline after Hasbro puts GI Joe's 1/18th line on hiatus.

Artculation looks fine. Snake Eyes' eyes are kinda weird, or... not weird enough. Not harvey dentified at all.

That's cause he was in an accident and had his face all blown off! so he has like... no eyelids and other disfiguring scars! or something. It's been years since i last read through my comics. =P

Oh... It was just one guy that created most of the back stories, right? And I thought Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow weren't really enemies, kinda like Grey Fox and Solid Snake.

You mean the guy who wrote the comics for 10 years straight (record for a monthly comic?) and the file cards for all the GI Joe characters? Larry Hama!

[fuzzy memory] Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes were "brothers" and trained in the same dojo, but Storm Shadow was really jealous cause the white boy, Snake Eyes, was favored by SS's uncles/masters over him! So it was a pretty big rivalry and grudge that SS kept for years until Snake Eyes tried to help SS avenge his uncles' deaths. [/fuzzy memories]

At first glance the new designs miss the point of what made G.I. Joe cool, at least the 80s toy line. 80's Joe was realistic but a bit surreal. Real attention paid to military hardware and design sensibility, with some elements thrown in that were more military science fiction than saturday morning cartoon (most of the time). These guys look like the military cariactures from Small Soldiers.

Also, making them big figures is a mistake as half of what made Joe was the large, detailed vehicles that had places for like, up to a dozen figures or more.

The Metal Gear Solid comparison is funny as I always kinda saw the MGS series character designs as a modern G.I. Joe - the real way to update it.

As I posted in the purged thread, the ninjas are cool, the others are sort of meh (specially duke wtf)

Ill be in if they show an updated pathfinder that doesn't suck.

OH GOD PLEASE TELL ME LARRY HAMA IS INVOLVED.

I'm rereading the first run of GI Joe (1-150) and it's SO AWESOME. Do the Image/Devil's Due comics continue the spirit or are they shitty?

BTW, the CGI "GI Joe Spy Troops" movie written by Hama was total fucking shit.

The Devil's Due series pretty much picked up a few years after the Marvel series ended, with the same characters, setup, and history. Basically, it was "Cobra's back, let's reactivate GI Joe," so the nostalgia factor was definitely there. Hama even came onboard, with a companion series called "GI Joe: Frontline."

I followed the Devil's Due GI Joe series for about the first year, but then I lost interest. This summer, they're ending that series and starting over, with a new approach that involves a smaller "core" group of Joes as it was in the beginning -- kinda like Sigma Six is supposed to be, I guess.

Devil's Due also gave GI Joe the "Ultimate" -style reboot treatment with a series called GI Joe: Reloaded. Similar characters, still Joe vs Cobra, but some very significant changes were made from what I understand. This initially had my interest, but the artwork was just plain bad and I didn't bother sticking with it beyond the first few issues.

Personally, I didn't really care for any of them, though I guess the original (not Frontline or Reloaded) is worth a look.

GI Joe lasted all the way to 154, i think. And the Special Missions ruled too, it had the death of most of the Oktober Guard!!!

Anyway, what Spike said is pretty much right on with the Devil's Due series, but if you like the original run then the art in the Devil's Due comics shouldn't be a problem. It stays very true to its roots all the way through.

Oh, and the Spy Troops movie really wasn't total shit... at least Cobra Commander still shined through the kiddified story/action. He was still a scheming bastard who fought dirty whenever possible, just like in the comics.
