UK emergency-alert system: 3pm Today

Already turn mine off. When in UK do we really need a real emergency alerts anyway!, we hardly live on any major fault line or have extreme weather events. Only real reason is if WW3 happens and if they have to send a alert because your going to get nuked I'd rather not know about it anyway, lol

Not really. Other than some bad flooding, but even that's hardly immediately life threatening. It still think it's a good idea.

That said, family anecdote time: a relative was asked to design the Sellafield nuclear waste storage. He put in earthquake protection measures into the design. They mocked him and said the UK never gets earthquakes. About two weeks later there was an earthquake in the area. They came back to him tails between their legs. He told them to naff off.

People getting so angry over this lmao. Hopefully it'll never need to be used but it's good to have.

True, we don't really need it because we don't get earthquakes/storms etc but could be useful for areas that get heavy flooding. I don't know if they'd use this for heatwaves. The weather is only going to get more extreme over the coming years so I think it's good to have it set up incase we do need it.

I think this is more about preparing for a potential WW3. I've noticed in the last few months my area has sirens put up. Never seen a fucking siren like that in my life before. And now we're getting emergency alerts on our phones? I don't want to sound like a paranoid conspiracy nut but it's a bit unsettling.

Even if WW3 did come there isn't much a fucking siren or phone alert is going to do. If we have a nuclear war then I'm fucked because I'm in Scotland and most of us live within 20-100 miles of a nuclear submarine base. There will be 2-3 nukes dropped on us for sure!

We've had this stuff for years in the Netherlands. Sirens too, those have been around for decades. They go off when harmful chemicals are released during fires for example. Doubt it has much to do with WW3 or nukes, but I guess it could be different in the UK.

Hopefully it's nothing but just seems strange to me that all of a sudden they are testing this and have put up sirens outside (I'm talking in the last few months). Maybe we did have sirens around the city before but in my 30 years living here I haven't seen one. I thought we'd have some left over from WW2 or something.

The entire state of Florida got one at 4:45 AM a couple days ago. The dude in charge of sending out the alerts got fired for it :messenger_grimmacing_

Who didn't get anything. Nor did the last next to meet in the café.

Some others did a minute early. Wasn't even loud.

I didn't have reception (fuck you EE, I thought you were supposed to be the best) and my phone is a Japanese model.

Assuming localised broadcasts are possible, I think the most likely use case outside of extreme weather will be terrorist attacks in London. If we ever get another 7/7, what better way to let people know?

holy fucking shit this almost killed my ass today. I was driving at 75mph along the M1 motorway with my phone bluetooth connected for my map signals.

I was already tired from driving like 5 hours today and BOOM, full blast speaker alarm whilst I was one handing the steering wheel drinking my tea. Drink got launched accross my dash, slipped the wheel and career into the hard shoulder lane and damn near had a heart attack. So loud, WTF were they thinking?!

Sounds like it was a fail. People who use the provider, Three, didn't get the alert. Also, people who did get it got it at random times. My wife got it at 14:59 and mine came along at 15:06.
