finally a 360 game back in the top 40. There must have been quite a few others that managed to get a 360 last week besides me

Stop UK bashing.
All the hardcore gamers in the UK import.
This chart only represents the non-importers.

Importing is such a big problem for the EU sections of gaming companies that they are suing everyone and pressuring to have laws made against imports.

Indeed. They're taste is worse than Americans. And that's saying something.

Interestingly enough, it's No.5 on the US DS chart:

1. Mario Kart DS - Nintendo
2. Nintendogs Lab and Friends - Nintendo
3. Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time - Nintendo
4. Super Mario 64 DS - Nintendo
5. Zoo Tycoon DS - THQ
6. Sonic Rush - Sega
7. Kirby Canvas Curse - Nintendo
8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe - Buena Vista
9. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - EA
10. The Sims 2 - EA

Carry on...

Well that's an optimistic way of looking at things. I'm down with that.

Chart summary:

09/Jan/2006

EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Most Wanted’ is No1 in the All Formats starting grid for 2006, notching up 6 weeks as All Formats No1, more than any other game in the past year.

EA’s multi-format racer may have been deposed by Ubisoft’s ‘King Kong: Official Game of the Movie’ two weeks ago, but now looks comfortable at No1, selling almost twice as many this week as Ubisoft’s monster movie tie-in, which is a non-mover at No2. 2005 started with ‘Need for Speed: Underground 2’ holding on to No1 for 4 weeks: its successor could well repeat this feat, despite pressure from EA’s forthcoming Xbox 360 ‘Ridge Racer 6’, due out in two weeks time. In a week devoid of new releases, the Top 10 all jostle for position, with EA’s ‘The Sims 2’ (PS2/PC/GBA/XB/DS/GC/MAC) performing well, up 4 places from No8 to No4 (the PSP version is due out next week). Other post-Christmas climbers include Ubisoft’s ‘Crazy Frog Racer’ (PS2/GBA/PC), up 18 places from No37 to No19, while EA’s ‘From Russia with Love’ (PS2/XB/GC) re-enters the Top 40 at No24.

yeh, because the ps2 and psp are horrible "consoles".

I don't mean all games & all consoles of course, but I think there's really too many licences and too many games that aren't really of quality. And I haven't never seen a top 10 UK with only A; AA; AAA games.

There are really many EA-games too, and it's horrible that a good game like Mario Kart DS is at the bottom of the list (for example).

Well, if you don't like UK charts, there's always the latest French chart:

1. Need For Speed Most Wanted (EA, PS2)
2. Grand Theft Auto : Liberty City Stories (Take 2, PSP)
3. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami, PS2)
4. Call of Duty 2 : The Big Red One (Activision, PS2)
5. Star Wars : Battlefront 2 (Lucas Arts, PS2)
6. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo, NDS)
7. True Crime 2 : New York City (Activision, PS2)
8. Dragon Ball Z : Budokai Tenkaichi (Atari, PS2)
9. Les Sims 2 (Electronic Arts, PS2)
10. Mario Smash Football (Nintendo, GC)

The French suprise me. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 on that list are all worth playing.

I didn't think they had it in them.

The real trouble is that this seems to be a vicious circle... hardcore gamers import good games instead of buying them domestically, so less good games get released domestically, so less people buy good games domestically, etcetera. Of course, a lot of the time if we do get a UK release of a game it's gimped in some way - shitty PAL conversion, removal of audio options or extras, no progressive scan/60Hz.

It failed to chart in the UK Top 40 VGC (all format/All Price) the week it was released. :-\

Possibly because it seemed like about three copies were shipped for the whole of the UK. Finding one on launch day was almost impossible.

Wow. GCN is D E A D in Europe. It's really gotten quite bad.

PSP seems to be experiencing a Christmas hangover this week with the largest drop in software sales, allowing Xbox to climb back into third place behind PS2 and PC. A glance at the GameCube charts reveals its top-selling title for the week, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, shifting less than a meagre 750 units.

Sony PSP fuels surge in Game Group sales

LONDON (Reuters) - Demand for Sony's hand-held PSP console and games like "Need for Speed Most Wanted" helped fuel a 26.6 percent rise in like-for-like Christmas sales at Game Group, the video games retailer said on Tuesday.

Game (GMG.L: Quote, Profile, Research), which has 700 stores around Europe, also forecast rapid sales of both Sony's PSP and Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles in 2006, spurred by second-half launches of new consoles Sony Playstation 3 and Nintendo Revolution.

"This outstanding Christmas sales performance has helped an otherwise difficult year as the industry transitions to the next technology cycle," Chairman Peter Lewis said in a trading update for the six weeks to January 7.

Game shares rallied as much as 9 percent in early trade, and at 10:10 a.m. were up 5.7 percent at 83 pence, valuing the business at about 279 million pounds.

Game said it expected group profit before taxation and exceptional items for the year ending January 31 to be between 8 million pounds and 10 million pounds. It had said in November that profit would be between 3 million and 13 million pounds.

Sales of Sony PSP consoles and games like "Prince of Persia: Revelations", had been extremely good, Game said, adding it had benefited from improving product supply in the run-up to Christmas..

GAME love the PSP, its all over the front of their shops, with huge adverts, and every employee offers sexual favours if you buy one. The poor DS sits on one little stand somewhere behind educational PC games.

The top selling (and only) X360 game in that top-40 list is PGR3 in 34th place......

I thought it would be doing better than that?

So perhaps you said it in a jokingly fashion, but there's one thing I find interesting still...now, I don't work in a game store myself and really don't know much about it, but a friend of mine works at GAME and he said publishers (in Sweden) always have to pay for space in actual stores...so couldn't it be more about PSP publishers in European countries spending money (from Sony in one way or another) on advertising in GAME stores? I heard they get paid a LOT for doing that kind of campaigns (usually by EA, obviously). And in that case, shouldn't it be partly Nintendo's own fault in the UK for not giving the DS more attention in game stores?

Yeah don't worry, I know it is Nintendo's fault cuz they won't pay up, but it just annoys me. I just wish for a perfect world where everything is fair. If I worked in a game shop, I would put out huge DS adverts everytime the manager went away. :D

damn, why do the french have to be so horny as to make a perfectly good social interaction game degrade into some mad Lesbian romp game?

if you respond to this to correct me, you are a moron.

It's a VERY good news for PSP - GAME is the biggest VG chain in the UK (and in Europe).

Eurogamer reports on UK sales:

Electronic Arts' Christmas number one, Need for Speed Most Wanted, is still in the top spot of the UK charts this week, racking up a sixth week at number one and selling twice as many units as its nearest competitor, Ubisoft's King Kong.

Six weeks at the top is more than any other title has managed during the last year, and given how quiet January usually is in terms of new releases, NFS Most Wanted could be set to repeat the feat of its predecessor, Need for Speed Underground 2, which held on to the number one position for the first four weeks of 2005.

King Kong held steady at number two this week, while FIFA '06, last year's biggest-selling game in the UK, was also a non-mover at number three. Another EA title, The Sims 2, was the biggest mover in the top ten, up four places to number four.

The remainder of the chart is largely just shuffling for position between already established titles, with only Ubisoft's Crazy Frog Racer showing a major leap in position, rising 18 places to number 19.

The PSP's biggest-selling title, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, is still in the top ten - falling two places this week to number eight - while the best selling title on the DS is still Mario Kart DS, at number 32 this week in the all-formats chart

The German version has a better title, but sadly doesn't live up to it's full potential.
Die Sims.
