Ultimate Brain Games - this real?

It says something like "976 players online"... which I admit, is a bit of an acheivement for a game that isn't even out. But it illustrates a point I guess.

It wouldn't be the best online title ever, but it'd make it more worthy of consideration..

Real? *shrugs* At best it's a mockup of what they hope to have ready, though.

Been looking forward to this one for a long time, though. A collection of simple classics that will work well with the DS's interface and be decent one-cart multiplayers.

My brother'd love this. When he's not out and getting on with his life, he's indoors talking to friends on MSN and playing all of these kind of free online games.

I haven't played some of these since I was in school... and I don't mean high school. Mario and Sonic were always so much more appealing at the time. Shit, the only one I'd be any good at would be four in a row :D I'd still be into this though.

Well, that would help explain the massive delay it has suffered from May to November. I'm willing to bet they're waiting for Nintendo to give them the online specs for their games. Ultimate Card Games was also delayed to Fall, probably for the same reason.

Sexcellent. My PSP and Wirless Router await Nintendo's next move.

This will be awesome. I hope you can create a character and play with him online. I hope there's punishment for those who drop games and I hope you're able to view how many times each player has dropped a game.

It's all about Go online. If this title actually goes online (next month no less) then I'll bite. Mahjong and Go with online connectivity is something I could see myself sinking hours into.

Creating your own character has already been announced, so that should work out presuming it's online at all.

for being the two games that were announced first for the DS, they sure are taking forever to come out.

I so hope this is true.

If it's like the GBA version than it's not actually Mahjong but Shanghai (the solitair game using Mahjong tiles), but who knows for sure. I know a few people who would be very happy if it was really Mahjong. Not that they'd buy a DS but still.

If it's like the GBA version, it'll have every kind of multiplayer possible. But I didn't even think about online play! :) I'm excited.

;)

In this case "online" really conflicts with "portable". If people have very limited time sessions (just a few minutes here or there at Starbucks or the library or the airport), then there will be a ton of dropouts.

Yes, yes, but I just cannot sit at a computer to play games any more. I did that for many years of my life, but I work at a computer all day at my job now and have no desire to sit at one longer when I get home. It's too uncomfortable. Laying in bed at night playing Go with friends would be more relaxing than hunching over a monitor in my opinion.

That would even be perfect if it would only be W-LAN enabled. Though i'm not sure if you can place the go stones in such a low resolution.

Why do people always use the phrase "hunched over the monitor" to slight PC gaming? Your posture is the problem, not the platform =P

This isn't even a twitch/FPS game that would elicit the hunched, close-to-the-screen posture.....you can lounge back in your chair and languidly play a high-resolution Java games for free. The main problem with the idea is that when you're at home, there is a superior version of all these games on your PC....and when you are on-the-go you probably will not have enough time to devote to an extended game of Go or Chess.

The fact that my face is squarely right in front of a monitor makes a big difference. I would much rather be sitting at a couch or laying in bed when playing games. Having my face that close to a monitor and sitting in an office chair is not my idea of relaxing.

:D

I don't think it's being close to a monitor that matters....since you'll probably be much much closer to the screen of a handheld (even if you fully extend your arms). Buy a nice chair and lean back =) I use a $20 camping chair on my casual use "at home" PC....

Craig Harris (IGN DS editor)

"I've confirmed it with Telegames this morning. Both games will be online.

We'll know more, officially, as we get closer to E3.

-- Craig "

That's cool... Now the question becomes how Nintendo's online plans are going to work. The casuals who these games are aimed at are the ones who need it to be foolproof.

PSP's setup is not hard, but it's a bit more cumbersome than I had hoped for.

("Special software required" is promising.)

Not to doubt IGN, but we had a reader getting confirmation on both games too.
Looks like the Nintendo DS could be better than I expected :)

Does anyone think that "Special software required" involves downloading GameSpy software to your PC? Much like the vaporware DSlink of last week?

If that were true, then you wouldn't be able to play anywhere, anytime, now would you?

I meant that the GameSpy software would be in the same vein as what was promised with the DSlink, not that the Nintendo/Gamespy software is vaporware. Of course it isn't. I was just musing that it might be in the form of a PC download, or maybe not like the PSP. IIRC, GameSpy software is a pretty big install, this is from a few years ago mind you, but I'd imagine they'd dumb it down for the DS plebs who don't want to deal with DNS stuff.

That was the general idea amongst the crowds when GameSpy appeared in that Nintendo Power article. Probably some GameSpy Lite-version specifically for the NDS or something. I for one never believed the whole "play at your local McDonalds"-stuff.

Didn't know craig had confirmed, good stuff!

As for how its all going to work -- I think DS will function on any wireless open network. Its possible that there could be options or a kind of wizard for configuring in secure environments (although Iwata's speech re: WEP etc puts that in doubt).

For those who have standard ethernet connections, if they really wanted to get serious, Nintendo could even release a no frills PCI, USB or Firewire peripheral for PCs.... or a third party could jump in and do it instead.

People have already got DS downloading code from PCs using "DS download" option and various PCI cards with a common chipset. Perhaps something similar could be done on an official basis for an affordable one off price.

The Gamespy technology sounds awesome. A lot of games on consoles have used some element of the Gamespy middleware before, but Gamespy have never really backed a whole console with it before... I'd say some features are gonna be able to come as standard in most DS online games. I don't wanna jump the gun but there is hope here for their voice chat systems, leaderboards, file downloads/trading, and new things like online pictochat, gamertags etc to make it into the fray and be a common occurance.

I think some of you are interpreting "Special software required" in the wrong way. That sounds like the language used when talking about some new peripheral. Something like With the Eye Toy, control the game with your whole body! (Special software required), just meaning that it doesn't work that way on every single game.

Good point. Special software (online games) required to play online. It makes a lotta sense.

Hrrm, well, yes and no... The Net Code really doesn't seem to be built into the DS (the PSP saves net settings globally, but there's no way to access this stuff on DS yet), so it will have to ship on the online enabled games or be available via download. I assume that there's going to be some way to set this up so you don't have to reconfigure your DS with each game you buy, especially since Nintendo has started stressing ease of use....
