Ulver - Perdition City...

I gave this a whirl not long after it was released, but the vast majority of it didn't grab me at ALL. I knew it was getting rave reviews, but it was just completely lost on me.

Flash forward however long it's been. I just got new speakers, and I wanted to test them out, and thought back to the one song I did like (Future Sound of Music). I wanted to see how the "far off electronic noises" sounded (and they sound very far away =)).

On a whim I decided to give the rest of the cd a spin. Second impression: It's...bizarre. Lots of off melodies and very unorthodox musical directions. It is definitely not the typical sound I associate with electronic music.

That being said, this may be one of those albums that just needed a few years to fester in the back of the brain. Either way, I'm finding the songs have an almost grotesque nature to them that is oddly somehow still quite beautiful. I know I'm using alot of adjectives that really don't generally fit music, but it's not really conventional music at all.

In a rare occurence, I'm at a loss to find any other words to say about this album. These next few days of listening are going to be an interesting experience, to say the least. I'm starting to think this is going to be an album I'll hang on to for a long, long time.

Has anybody else listened to this one and have any thoughts theyd care to share? I'm curious as to what others think about it.

I've wanted to check out Ulver for a very long time, but I think I'll have to start from the bottom and listen to their black metal stuff first. It's actually not all that surprising that they shifted styles so drastically, considering how quite a few other notable black metal musicians (Mortiis and Burzum, to name a couple) went the electronic route as well.

I can't vouch for their previous stuff, as all I've heard is perdition city, but I can definitely hear the black metal influences from the past. It's not so much in any tangible aspect of the music so much as the sortof twisted bizarre and unsettling mood that comes through on the album. I'd most definitely reccomend giving it a spin though, even if you have to wade through years of blackmetal to get there =).
