Okay I am hoping to gather a legion of GA nerds who share my passion for the underground hip hop of the mid 90s.

For New York we had WNYUFM (Tuesday & Thursdays I think) with DJ Mayhem and someother guys. Sunday nights we had Future Flavas and Stretch and Bobbito.

Here are a few picks

Common & Dela Soul - Da Bizness (Remix)
Jamal - Fades em all (Remix)
Nas - De Ja Vu
Common - Ressurection 95 (Extra P Remix)
Tribe Called Quest - Oh My God (Remix)
Craig Mack - Get Down (40 Projects Remix)
Nas - One on One
Rass Kas - Won't Catch Me Runnin (Remix)
Jeru Da Damaja - Can't Stop the Prophet (Pete Rock Remix)
Nas - The World is Yours (Remix)
Jeru Da Damaja - Invasion
The Roots & DJ Honda - "Clap Ya Hands To the Beat" (Dont know if thats the name)
Ahmad - Back in the Day
Natural Elements - Hey Hey
Natural Elements - NYC
Dark Sun Riders - (Cant remember the name of the song)
Mic Geronimo - Shit's Real
Royal Flush - Movin On Ya Weak Productions

Well I could go on.

But anyway. I lost all my tapes !! Some of these songs are impossible to find. Can anyone share information as to some of the names of these songs I cant remember or more importantly where can i find theses songs now !!!

Underground hip hop could include a well-known artist, it's more about the song. Especially a lot of those remixes which were not for mainstream radio.

I'm not a huge hip-hop fan, but occasionally I'll be over at a friend's house, and I'll actually hear something that tickles my fancy, but it's pretty rare. I only know 3 names on that list. Nas & Tribe Called Quest, which I don't particularly like. And Jeru the Damaja, who I love.

I'm not sure what era these people are from, but I like: Jedi Mind Tricks, MF Doom, King Geehdora, and Necro.

Those are awesome songs. :)

I also loved Jeru the Damaja's first two singles back in '93 or so-- "Come Clean" (awesome sound samples-- I think it's water dripping through pipes) and "D. Original".

My pick- Hilltop Hoods

They're actually becoming pretty well known now (in Australia) but they stay underground... Shit i HIGHLY reccomend everyone here to give them a listen if you haven't already (particularly their latest album- The Calling) even though I know most of you would be reluctant to listen to Australian hip-hop- just give it a chance you wont be dissapointed.

BTW my favourite track of theirs is "The Sentinel"..."Nosebleed Section" i don't like that much personally but everybody else seems to fucking love it.

Man, I don't get Aussie Hip-Hop... all the MCs sound exactly the same. The accent, the flow. Can't tell 'em apart. And the beats? mediocre, run-of-the-mill stuff. Lots of potential, but ultimately flat sounding tunes.

These dudes seem to be going in in somewhat the right direction. Still a ways to go yet, though...

I dunno man...how much Australian hip hop have you heard? And what HTH songs/albums? HTH are really original and i think they stand out a lot compared to most other aussie MCs. If you haven't already, I suggest you get The Calling, they really shine in that album IMO.

Agreed except for beats and accents. There lyricism is quite poor though they have the odd line that makes you laugh, 'Not even John Farnham could take the pressure down.' :lol

Also I'd like to say that the current Underground is run by beats. The same as the mainstream.

Stuff that's underground, but not *too* hard to get a hold of...

Aceyalone- All Balls Don't Bounce, and especially A Book of Human language. I think some of Abstract Rude's stuff is from around here as well, but I'm not sure.

The Roots - not really underground, but look for their remixes - especially Proceed Pt. 2

Roots Manuva - Brand New Second hand

People Under the Stairs - The Next Step II, Questions in the form of an answer.

Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs

Maybe not quite underground, but Canibus - Buckingham Palace

Dr. Octagon - the Octagynocologyst. And I think Dr. Doooom was around here, too.

MF Doom - Operation : Doomsday. Someone already said it, but still...

M.O.P. - all sorts of albums

And for laughs, Kwest the Madd ladd - 101 things to do while I'm with your girl, and Akinyele - put it in your mouth.

Prince Paul - a Prince Among Thieves

Dead Prez - Let's get Free

Del - Both Sides of the Brain

The Coup - Steal This Album, or Kill My landlord. I guess Party Music is close enough, too.

Grouch - Fuck the Dumb

Fatlip - What's up Fatlip?

Freddie Foxxx/Bumpy Knuckles - forget which album...

Kool G. Rap - 4,5,6.

Planet Asia - Planet Asia

The Artifacts - Between a Rock and a hard Place. That's them was decent, too.

Busta Rhymes - okay, but the Woo-Ha! remix...

High & Mighty - Home Field Advantage. Okay, this one is for the cameos and production, since Eon's just weak. But B-Boy Document '99 alone...

Handsome Boys Modeling School - So...How's your Girl.
