RICHMOND, Va. -- A rush to purchase $50 used laptops turned into a violent stampede Tuesday, with people getting thrown to the pavement, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. One woman went so far to wet herself rather than surrender her place in line.

"This is total, total chaos," said Latoya Jones, 19, who lost one of her flip-flops in the ordeal and later limped around on the sizzling blacktop with one foot bare.

EDIT: now with pics:

"People threw themselves forward, screaming and pushing each other. A little girl's stroller was crushed in the stampede. Witnesses said an elderly man was thrown to the pavement, and someone in a car tried to drive his way through the crowd."

Y'know, it probably would have been easier if they had a mail order campaign.

Blandine Alexander, 33, said one woman standing in front of her was so desperate to retain her place in line that she urinated on herself.
:lol :lol :lol

Jesse Sandler said he was one of the people pushing forward, using a folding chair he had brought with him to beat back people who tried to cut in front of him.

"I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, 'Bam,'" the 20-year-old said nonchalantly, his eyes glued to the screen of his new iBook, as he tapped away on the keyboard at a testing station.

"They were getting in front of me and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just," he said.

Damn, $50?! I'd tough it out for a chance.

The school should have charged $100 instead. That would be $100,000 right there.

Fucking Apple people.

Seriously, I used to have a (now) 4 year old iBook and I can say that they're not that good, unless you intend on sticking to Classic. Not that they would know this or anything.

Fucking Apple people.
99% of "Apple People" (including myself) would not sink to that level. We're Apple People because we have money.

People running over people for cheap shit makes me hate humanity.

I sort of doubt alot of these people were Apple users.

Many going to try to make a buck off of them on EBay.

If you looked at these pictures without any context you might think this was people trying to get into the US embassy in some 3rd world country... but nope...

Apple's new iBook marketing slogan:

"The Apple iBook.... so good you'd kill for one..."

Yes, you merely laugh at them from your ivory tower sipping chardonnay and listening to classical music in iTunes while Rufus and The Turks take care of the riff-raff below. Give me a break. Hell, Apples aren't even all that expensive anymore, but that statement embraces the worst kind of Apple arrogance. "People running over people for cheap shit" should maybe make you think about your first sentence.

OMG!

If you haven't followed the story in my town, those laptops were used by school kids for 4 years. THey were going to be on sale via surplus to everyone for $50(what they're valued for). Then the county heard people from far away as Cali were coming just for the sale (which insaine for a shit iBook with no software) and restricted the sale to just the county residents (people were bitching). I NEVER expected a near riot to happen o_O. The old laptops I have in my office I use for parts are better than those POS they're selling.

HEY!

I'm not a hick or redneck :)

Edit: It's sad that people can't read that those POS laptops aren't worth $50

looks like I could make a killing refurbing those if I charge $20 a hour

I just watched the video and the guy was surprised that they would have a crowd that big. Dude... its a $50 dollar laptop. You can't do that good on ebay! I mean come on...

I was joking by the way.

But you sorta validated yet another negative stereotype about Apple users btw. The whole "we have money, we don't have to sink to their level."

I too am an Apple user and I pretty much can't stand 99% of them.

4 year old iBooks? That's 500Mhz PPC750CX G3 with 64 or 128MB of PC66 soldered on the mobo, right? 8MB ATI Rage, 10Gb HDD and whatnot?

Should be a real winner with OSX. :lol

It's the neoGAF way. Unfortunately trolling red states has been status quo for about 2 years here. I wish they had let people come from all over the country, if only to shut people like Teiserias up.

Oh don't get me wrong. I hate this shit state. I'm just sad people are buying $50 paper weights. If you know a tiny bit about Apple computers around here, you've hit the jackpot.

haha and I WAS THERE!!

I left at around 8:30 though, there was so many people and I had to get to work. The merchandise certainly wasn't worth half a day off work to get.

I was planning to give it to my nephew for school. Hey, good enough for an 8th grader.

Neither am I, doesn't mean I don't think the majority of people from our state aren't hicks or rednecks - at least until you get a bit more north, at which point they're just pretentious assholes who think they're Carrey or Mr. Big from Sex and the City.

...you remember all that stuff offhand?

To be quite honest, I'm not seeing a lot of god-fearing mullet-wearing rednecks in those pics, yet the same tired red-state blast still came.

:lol

Richmond is equally (if not moreso) pretentious. I've been to the country club of Virginia for a wedding once, and it was like they were pretending it was still 1950. It's like all the worst aspects of American society converged in that one place.
