I just started trying to use it the other day. It's like a ghetto messageboard where people post files in several parts. I still haven't fully figured out how to use it; all I know is it has insane download speeds and a lot of porn.

It's a haven for illegal warez... Games, music, software. All really really organized, with great download speeds if you pay for usenet service. You need a new reader to take advantage. You can buy bandwidth monthly, I've seen 25 gigs go for 10 bucks...

Probably the last frontier along with IRC for illegal downloads.

usenet is probably the safest, most private place for warez and other seedy shit. Your isp probably has this this service for free but its likely be subpar. You can use that to test how usenet works though.

Usenet is a HUGE messageboard, consisting of different messageboard topics (newsgroups), which is actually a network of servers that all share more or less the same content locally so users can access it faster, some people just happen to use it for warez and files and whatever (since you can encode a file into a text-string and post it up, usually in multiple parts). Most ISPs have usenet servers setup for local user use, but they often have the binary (file) newsgroups disabled.

I find it kind of sad that this what the definition of usenet has been turned into over the years.

:: sigh ::

(If the spam hadn't gotten so out of hand, I'd still be posting in newsgroups)

Best usenet interface I ever used was my old WebTV service. I loved that thing. User friendly as hell, too.

wasnt usenet basically THE message baords before this kinda crap er forum

and yeah

the amount of educational downloads you can get off it put EVERY type of filesharing to shame, IMO.

Yes, that's how I started using Usenet. Sadly, the conversational aspect of it has declined greatly.

Still though, great place to find anime and tv shows.

Usenet is like a massive massive set of message boards, that goes back to the early 1980s. It is another part of the internet. usually seperate from the world wide web, unless you are using a web-based newsreader like Dejanews.com (now Google Groups) which basicly turns usenet into webpages.

the easiest way to participate in usenet is go to google groups. you see groups when you are on google.com. go there and type in, say, 'playstation' or 'rock music' - the main groups for playstation or rock music will come up. (usually start with rec. or alt.)...

have fun.

yeah, I used that from 1997 to 1999. between the WebTV newgroup interface and the awesome Dejanews, that's how i started using usenet.
