If I were an airline executive and I knew a device like this had the potential to take down one of my aircraft and kill hundreds of people, I wouldn't sleep at night without extra precautions keeping this thing out of the air.

I saw a note 7 and a s3 in the closet making babies, and I saw one of the babies, and one of the babies looked at me.

Jesus this is really bad for Samsung. I'd be an incredibly pissed Note 7 owner at this point. I almost went for a Note 7 but I'm glad I didn't.

Why? You can get a new updated one. Most people seem to have missed the huge GLOBAL recall.

You think the airline cares? They have enough shit to deal with without having someone say their phone has been replaced... plus you know, prove that replacement is 100% fine.

And apple basically tossed samsung an alley-oop pass this year...

anyone have a good gif of a failed alley oop?

Airlines don't care if you have a recalled one. It's banned even if you sent your phone in and got it replaced.

Yup, theres no way airlines can train people to distinguish potentially faulty and new safe note 7s. There's a reason Samsung's stock lost $10billion in value today lol

http://www.wsj.com/articles/samsung-shares-unloaded-in-galaxy-note-7-fire-sale-1473428218

Investors wiped more than $10 billion off Samsung Electronics Co.’s market value Friday after air-safety regulators singled out the company’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphone as a potential fire hazard, prompting airlines to issue warnings to passengers.

This is a dagger in the heart for Samsung. Negative PR and the fact that folks looking to buy a new phone or upgrade will probably not wait around for Samsung to rectify this whole issue. The Note series is gonna take a serious hit thanks to this debacle.

Yeah I'm sure that anxiously waiting weeks with a potentially dangerous device while Samsung produces a replacement, and being banned from using it or charging it on flights it's no reason to be pissed off at all! You get a new one! Wow thanks Samsung.

Airlines don't care because it is hard to verify if it is a safe Galaxy Note 7. Notice that Chinese airlines have banned the phone even though Samsung said all the Galaxy Note 7s purchased in China are safe.

Yeah, this story seems to keep rolling into a bigger snowball. It reminds me of the Audi acceleration issue in the '80s. Took years for people to trust their cars again. But then again Toyota seemed to rebound okay from their unintended acceleration debacle, so who knows. 2016 is such a flaming pile of bad news that people may not pay much attention.

Most recent comparison would probably be Chipotle. They revamped their whole prep techniques and even introduced new items, but when you are constantly bombarded with negative PR, people will forget about you and move on to the next best thing.

And people will pay attention when their own personal safety is compromised, at least in the short term.

While other phone manufactures are looking for that killer app that will take them to the top of the sales charts, Note7 IS the killer app.

Yeah....make batteries removable from now on. Hell, there should be a law that all batteries must be removable. It is anti consumer and dangerous.

People from elsewhere will be using those airlines too, not just Chinese people who bought their phones in China.

whoa. not even checking in (as in, 'checked luggage', not carry on)? ... do you have to fedex your phone to your destination or what?

The Note 7 is probably the best all-around phone on the market (unless you're an iOS user, ofc) and this happens. what a clusterfuck for Samsung.
Can't wait for people snitching on Samsung phone users on planes "EXCUSE ME, MISS?! THAT GUY OVER THERE! HE'S USING A GALAXY NOTE! I'M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT!"

this is turning into a bigger desaster than the AppleMaps thing.

Batteries were a mistake, they're nothing but trash ...

This is quite something. Fascinating to see what Samsung will do next. Get a rebranded Note 7 out in a couple of months? Try to just ride this out no matter what? Heavily invest in battery technology because of this?

Can the airlines even distinguish the Note 7 from an S7 Edge?

Well, i'm quite sure there'll be a memo saying:

"made by Samsung"
"huge ass phone"
"has a pen"
"screen curves around the edges"
(the pen slot at the bottom is what differentiates it from the S7 edge, the curved screen is what differentiates it from previous Note models)

... the much bigger issue is: The replaced "safe" Note 7 phones have a sticker on the box, but i'm quite sure there's nothing on the actual device that will brand these phones as 'safe'. (cmiiw!) So either this is a temporary ban, or they'll be banning the Note 7 line entirely?

I mean, not every Note 7 will blow up, but also, not every Note 7 circulating in late 2016 or 2017 will have been a recalled 'safe' model.
If they were super thorough, they'd have to ban that device family entirely.

probably just means checked in luggage. you can carry on but don't turn it on

Yeah, that kinda makes sense. thanks.
