If you missed the opportunity to buy the original iPod nearly 18 years ago, now is your second chance — but it won't be cheap.

A very rare first-generation iPod factory sealed in its "unopened original box" in "unopened original shrink wrap" has surfaced in a new eBay listing with an asking price of $19,995, over 50 times more than the $399 it cost when it was first unveiled by the late Steve Jobs in October 2001.

Jobs famously pitched the original iPod as offering "1,000 songs in your pocket." The iconic device features a 5GB hard drive, a two-inch grayscale LCD screen, up to 10 hours of battery life, a FireWire port, and a scroll wheel for "simple, one-handed navigation." Its 0.75-inch thickness was slim at the time.

It's hard to say exactly how many factory-sealed original iPods are still in existence, but there are likely not many, and they rarely go on sale. When they do, they often fetch large sums, with the $19,995 price for this listing in line with an original iPod that reportedly sold for $20,000 on eBay back in 2014.

Offers are open on eBay.

This is stupid. Something being rare doesn't mean it's worth that much. It depends what's the product at the end. There're still plenty of iPods out there

people who are buying this don't have an issue parting with 20k. Just because 20k means something to you guys doesnt mean its that way to everyone else. At a certain point money no longer registers the same value as other things to people who are rich. A memory, a moment in time, an object that brings back reflection, all that can be worth way more than inconsequential numbers to someone already rich in them.

I don't have the original but I have a classic 2006 unit that looks like this:

I absolute love it and I use it every day.

It has the stuff I can't find on Spotify to complement my music listening needs :)

That's cool, damn. I still have an original paper ad for the 1st gen iPod. It came in a National Geographic, of all places. It was perforated so you can remove it from the magazine and it folded out and explained what an iPod was, how much it costs, the release date, etc.

Who needs one of those when you can use a Creative Labs Nomad! <3

I actually had one and used it religiously. Thankfully, I was someone with impeccable taste and wore cargo pants, because that's what people with taste did back in the late 90s, so I could slip the thing right in my over-sized pocket and take it all over town with me.

I have an ipod I found on the floor in the toilet at a nightclub years ago.

- Never used (by me)
- Comes with original earphones (from the floor)
- Has a bunch of gay pop songs on it

Shall we start the bidding at $1000?

I would not want to put a blue light on that.😐
