I'm just wondering if a VGA -> DVI converter would allow me to play games from my PC (or laptop) onto my HDTV in HD mode? Has anyone tried this before? I'm curious as to the quality of doing. I was going to get a DVI videocard originally but I can't use that on my laptop so a converter sounds like the better choice.

Well, it's important to remember that VGA is an analog signal while DVI is a digital one. Therefore, any converter is going to have to actually transform (reencode) the signal, and as a result you're probably losing video quality (unless you're spending lots of money). I've heard the ATi one is pretty good, but otherwise I'd stay away.

Yeah i figured i'd lose quality, but would it be able to output at 1080i?

I'm checking out some bids on Ebay and it seems like there's only a dvi to vga converter that will turn a DVI signal to VGA.. does the other way around exist because that's what i need.

I don't know which card your refering to. I have the Radeon X800 and an HDTV with no DVI, but I can output with compontent cables and display my PC on my HDTV in 1080i.

i use my laptop on my hdtv with a VGA to DVI convertor. picture quality still looks great although i'd prefer a direct DVI connection.

i'm running at a resolution of 1280 x 1024 in stretched mode. looks pretty slick in my opinion.

what do you mean? i run a vga cable from my laptop to my hdtv receiver using a VGA to DVI connector. my hdtv only accepts DVI inputs.

I keep finding ones that say that they convert from dvi (from your videocard) to VGA.. will those work the other way around too?
