Video Capture Software

Alright, just got my capture card, and gasp, the software sucks :lol

I was able to get my tape on the PC, but I can't find any editing in the software.

Anyway, it comes out as MPEG-2, but when I open the file in Virtua Dub I get an error (to be expected, it's huge like over 2 gigs). It says it may not be an MPEG-2 stream. When I open the file in Camtasia Studio 2 it says "no codec available." When I open the file in Media Player, it works just fine however, both audio and video.

I've got a few tapes that I'd like to edit, put in some music, keep some of the audio, all that good stuff, so I need some software. I'd like to know the best stuff out there, regardless of price. I'm on Win XP.

I played around with a bunch on my Radeon and found WinVDR Pro does a great job at recording. Minimal CPU use, very adjustable, and it supports a ton of direct record formats including Divx.

Yeah, it looks pretty ugly by modern standerds but give the trial a download and check it out anyway.

Which capture card specifically?

Hmm its an AVerMedia DVD EZMaker PCI, if that helps.

The software included does a fine job of capturing it seems, I just can't edit the file it creates which is a problem.

I'm going to need software to get the video off the camera before I can edit it.

Ironically if I encode it in MPEG-1 I can edit the video in both Virtua Dub and Camtasia 2. It seems to be the MPEG-2 part that is getting corrupted. The error in Virtua Dub says it may be an MPEG-2 stream if that helps.

Thanks for your help thus far though :)

Both VirtualDub MOD and VirtualDub MPEG2 (tweaked versions of VirtualDub) can open MPEG2 files, I use em all the time for my captures.

Well thank you very much. I just tried VirtuaDubMOD and it looks like it's going to work like a champ. Also, already knowing how to use VD is another huge help, I had no idea the program had different flavors. That is going to work just fine I'm pretty sure, and it can open up HUGE files. Thanks again Sander and rc for your help guys.
