so i got an AIW and ive been messing around with it for a while but it just seems like i could be getting better quality out of the capturing and im wondering if anyone has any suggestions. the only software im using is whatever ATI supplied in the box.

heres a screenshot i took off my xbox:
xbmc5gx.jpg

while thats obviously good, i was expecting a lot better. this shot isnt very sharp almost seems out of focus and blurry. no matter how much i fiddle with the settings i cant get it come in great. should i even expect great?

should i be using other software?

and on to editing/encoding. whenever i capture a video the only way to make it come in good i have to sacrifice file size. i wanna record some short videos for friends but the files are too big. a 2 minute video shouldnt be 63mbs and even then the quality isnt that good.

am i expecting too much from the AIW? am i using bad software?

That does look pretty rough. What connection are you using? Obviously S-Video and component would be best. Depending on the program, you can capture at different resolutions, and different framerates. If you're using an older computer, it might be capturing at the best level it can do consistently, so as to prevent dropped frames.

I'm no expert, but I have spent the last three days in video capture hell, so I've learned some stuff.

im using composite inputs

thats not a screenshot from a video. i hook up the xbox and open the program and thats what it shows and i just hit the snapshot button.

i found some settings that records pretty nice and its 29mb per 60 seconds.

its mpeg-2, ntsc, 640x480, encode interlaced.

i like the quality but the filesize still seems high for that amount of time.

edit: i used mpeg-4 and got the same quality and i recorded 60 seconds and it went down to 10mb.

is there anything i can do to get that filesize down even more while still getting good quality?

i tried messing around with virtualdub, im assuming divx is the best compression to use?

i may have to pick up an xbox av pack. but my tv doesnt support svideo so im not sure how i could do this because i like to play on my tv and split it into the capturing device. (even when hooked up direct i get same quality results so i know its not because im splitting it).

does anyone suggest any other software? or is the software that comes with the AIW more than enough?

does anyone have any suggestions on settings for tv capturing for playback on a television?

ive tried 352x480, mpeg-2 dvd, 3mbit rate

640x480, mpeg4 and mpeg2, 8mbit rate

whenever i play it back on my tv you can tell it was captured and is definitely decent quality but i guess im just anal and looking for some higher quality playback. they look good when i watch them on my computer but on tv its not as good.
