Currently scouting out new video cards...

The two I'm looking at are the Radeon X700 Pro, and the Geforce 6600 GT. I'm really clueless as to what I should be looking for in these products.

Any suggestions one way or another, or other choices I should throw in the mix?

the x700 line and the 6600 line are pretty comparable, if you have AGP and no PCI express, then you're only choice until next month is the 6600 GT which is = or better than the x700 Pro in most benchmarks I've seen. Basically, if you want it now, or soon, the 600 GT is a fantastic choice, if you are willing to wait for ATi then by all means do so since as I said above they are as close to equal as can be.

If you have to check and your videocard needs upgrading then you most likely have AGP.

Unless you bought your computer in the past 3 months or so, you dont have PCI-Express.

6600GT is your best bet.

if you don't know, I can guarantee you don't have PCI-E

Well you could look in the back of the computer. I'm sure theres a way to do it in windows, but I don't know how.

I'd definitely go with the 6600gt though. I just got one and am very happy with it.

I'm noticing the 6600gt w/ 128mb ram is a comparible price to the x700 with 256... is that a noticable difference ingame?

Thumbing through pricewatch I'm noticing the opposite result actually- all of the X700's are AGP and all of the 6600's are PCI-Express.

if that's what it says, than I can only come to one conclusion... pricewatch is wrong. Check ATI's website

fyi, the 6600GT pci express card are a lot cheaper than the 6600GT AGP cards.

So do you have PCIe or not? If you do, best choice is either the new X800 Pro or the X800 XL (based on the r430) both 199 and 299 respectively.
