Video Game Esoterica: The Best Dreamcast Game Nobody Played - D2

The work of WARP and Kenji Eno are some of the most important video games in the history of video games for many reasons and Eno more so than any other video game developer in the 90s embodied the concept of the auteur more than Kenji Eno with his original 3DO game D, also known as D No Shokutaku in Japan as well as D's Diner Directors Cut! He trained in part Fumito Ueda who would go on to create Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian and in many ways would go on to shape the history of video games through his narrative structures and experimental gameplay techniques.

Sadly Kenji Eno passed away early but he left behind a legacy not only as a video game designer but also as an accomplished musician and composer...and also a bit of a hilarious troll

Up next: D2 on the Dreamcast...IMO one of the best Dreamcast games and probably also a Dreamcast hidden gem!

Disappointed this never got a European release

If my memory serves me right this was the first game to have screenshots running on Dreamcast

Pretty ambitious sequel, too.

I was thinking of another DC game no one played, but it's the one in my avatar.

That’s because I rejected it for release because it wasn’t commercially viable. I loved it, finished it and made the executive decision.
You gave the game the nush nush which is euro speak for a reach around. Only a bloody axel mate would blow the blaggart out like that.

I always feel Kenji Eno never got enough credit. In a way, he was doing things in terms of crackpot shit-crazy narratives in 3D gaming before Hideo Kojima or Suda 51. I'd say Eno, at least in the late '90s, was the most zany out of the three when it came to stories in games.

He also had some pretty innovative ideas for game design, from the invisible enemies in Enemy Zero to Real Sound to elements in D2. I'd of quite enjoyed a future where Kojima, Eno, and Suda 51 co-developed a game together 😢

This game always reminded me of an "arthouse/criterion" style of survival horror. The part in the cabin where Kimberly Fox plays that cassette tape and it sounds like some Nina Simone type shit was poetic. Her love story with Parker has this emotional subtlety to it as well.

It's a shame some of the gameplay elements can get super annoying. Constant random battles (thank goodness you have infinite ammo for the uzi).

But Eno's sense of direction and quirky depth of characters was always unique. I really hope the romhacking community would release an UNDUB uncensored project of this in the future.

I just found an English scanlation of a Horror Manga based on D2. Looks really good too! Gonna read this and replay D2 when the snow comes!

Really interesting game. The combat system is unique as hell, for better or worse.

Laura being a digital actress is still one of the coolest ideas in game development, surprised no one else did the same.

RIP Kenji.
