I'd like to buy a videoprojector since a always wanted a wide screen to watch DVD's and play games, especially now that you cand find "HD ready" projector for a reasonable price (Hitachi PJ-TX100).

But what abour watching TV on it (like cable TV since these things doesn't have a built in tv tuner)?

Is it safe for an everyday use, and can throw away my old Sony WEGA TV, or is viewing TV everyday on the projector to dangerous for the lamp and will cause heavy damage on it ?

If you literally use it every day it'll probably last about 2 years at the most; depending on how much the lamp for the model you buy costs that isn't too bad. If you want it to replace your TV you probably need to have a room that can get pretty dark, depending on how many lumens it projects at. I have a cheap InFocus X1, and as much as I like it it's pretty useless in the daytime.

Most HD projectors these days have lamps that are rated for about 5000 hours. Thats quite a long time, but most of the time, projectors are not designed to be used to watch, say, the news.

I have a Panasonic A700e, which is a fine HD projector, for watching TV ? Nah. I'd have to pull the curtains across, turn on the reciever, pull the screen down, close the door, turn on the projector, wait for the lamp to warm up, select the right input.

Or I can just turn the TV on.

Remember, the black levels are going to be a bit brighter than the darknes of the screen. Even if you have a pitch black room (ideal), light is still going to creep through the LCD, and if your walls are not painted black, light will reflect off those making the screen brighter still.

But for movies & games, projectors are the bomb.

Since I mainly watch films and series on TV, and some reports, but no news or anything else, I think I can let the TV go and but a video projector + a little LCD Screen to replace it then :p

I wish I had more place in my flat so I could keep the TV, but mine takes to much place, even if she's still working like she was bought yesterday ;/

Thanks guys

same here - i have no problems seeing the image in day light though.

My Z1 is useless in daylight though.

Oh I can *see* the image fine, but my screen (100 inches w) is pretty much white, so in the daytime, it ain't lookin too hot.

IMO, normal TV is too low res to watch blown up big. Also a wide field of view is tiring after a while. Great for movies and games now and then, but not general viewing.

Or, you could utilise the zoom to shrink the image to a more acceptable size for TV viewing, perhaps projected onto a plain white/light wall? Less issue with brightness as the light is more concentrated, and less fatiguing to watch.

And AE700 rocks, but I'm not buying a new projector until Panasonic/Sanyo bring out a 1080p panel (I'm happy with my lowly AE100)
