2005 Euro launch for NICO/Wanda

by Tom Bramwell

Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed its Japanese ICO development team's second game, known to you and us as Wanda And The Colossus, will be released in Europe during 2005.

In a brief missive sent to hacks this morning, Sony offered no specific details on the game other than its European name. Wanda, often referred to by its working title NICO, will henceforth be known as Shadow of the Colossus around these parts.

As you may recall, Shadow of the Colossus (which isn't as good a name in our books, if we're honest; "Wanda" had character) sees the player taking on huge, well, colossal creatures whose very bodies are the game's levels, which our hero has to navigate if he wants to find and exploit a weak spot to kill them.

For those of you who never played ICO, - the game that gives us so much faith and enthusiasm for the Colossus project - we suggest tracking it down forthwith. It's a gloriously simple, elegant and innocent adventure shared by a boy and a girl who share no mutual language, and it's one of only a few games ever to receive top marks on Eurogamer.

We're very hopeful of being able to get our hands on Shadow of the Colossus at this year's E3 trade show in LA. And assuming we do, it'll probably be all you can do to stop us jabbering about it.

Wanda > Shadow for me but I imagine with a catchy dark moniker like 'Shadow' that the game will pick up more sales with the masses. Which is a good thing.

Good name. There's really nothing wrong with having different names for different regions as long as the name STILL rocks. The game is really what matters anyway, and this is looking good! :D

Shadow is ok. Wanda and the Colosuss sounded like a porn movie title anyway. And a gay one since Wanda is male.

Que? Has it been confirmed that Wanda is the main character and henceforth male? Couldn't Wanda be the name of a female character in the game? At least in my book Wanda is a female name.

That's what I though too. Then it turned out Wanda is the name of the main character. I don't recall the source.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain it came out that Wanda is the dude. And they chose it because it's like 'wander" or something.

It's a much better name if you want the game to sell. A good move.

Shadow of the Colossus sounds like a mature/angst type game. And we know GAF hate angst. ANGST ANGST! NO BUY TILL IT'S $20!

If the Wanda was the name of the female character in the game, "Wanda and the Colossus" would be fine. As it is (Wanda being a male character, which makes sense in Japanese (Wanda = Wander = Wanderer), but not really in English) the title they have is fine, and about good as I was hoping to see.

Doesn't sound like that at all to me.

Yep, Wanda is the name of the main (male) character.

I also prefer "Shadow of the Colossus" for the name of the game. My only concern with this name is that there have been lots of games with "Shadow of" in the name, so this might not make an impression as a standout title unless the game really takes off.

Knowing what the game is about, I don't think "Wanda and the Colossus" is a bad name for the game myself. But, as a few others here have already pointed out, you have to consider the marketability to a broader audience. Mention that title in conversation to a person who isn't a card-carrying video gaming geek, and he might be inclined to tell you that it sounds like a game based on a children's book and/or that it might be geared towards young girls (since "Wanda" is typically perceived as a feminine name in English). I wouldn't have a problem if they decide to retain "Wanda" for the character's name within the game (since it's a fantasy game anyway), but it really isn't marketable in the game title.
