Hey,

I haven't read comics in quite a few years but want to get back into reading some. Recommend me some modern classics i should read to get caught up. I'd be into regular super hero style comics (xmen, spidey), manga (nothing too cheesy or ultraviolent) or sci-fi.

There has been some comic trade recommendations threads before. You could try searching for those.

Edit: Astonishing Xmen and Ultimate Spiderman.

eek another 'recommend me some comics' thread

I would read Geoff Johns JSA RUN and GL RUN
Ellis' THunderbolts Run
Current Detective Comics by Greg Rucka
Secret Six by Gail Simone
And the current Invincible Iron Man run.

Avoid Civil War, World War Hulk, and Secret Invasion, Dont read Blackest Night unless youve read Johns run on GL.

Some of my current favorites:

The Walking Dead
Invincible
Fables
DMZ
Scalped
House Of Mystery
Hellboy and all related titles (Abe Sapian, BPRD)

Over, but collected:

Y The Last Man
100 Bullets

Has there ever been a classic run of Fantastic Four?
Many, actually. The Stan Lee / Jack Kirby run on FF is comics legend (it's also the second longest comics collaboration in history - the first being Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley on Ultimate Spider-Man). If you want something a little more recent, Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo's run was very well received. You're actually in luck, though, because Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham just started their run on the title, and it's been completely stellar so far. Lots of "science action," as they call it. Good stuff.

Some I haven't seen mentioned yet:

All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely
Criminal by Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips
DC: New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke
Promethea by Alan Moore & J.H. Williams III

Edit: Powers by Brian Michael Bendis & Michael Avon Oeming

Yeah, I'm not going to recommend specific titles, but I will say that a surprising number of comics can be found at your local library. Saves quite a bit of money if you just want to read and not own.

Ultimate Spider Man and Invincible are both good if you're looking for classic (teen) super-hero romps.

Empowered and Scott Pilgrim are also both really great.

I like that half of the people here ignored the OP and recomended a bunch of non-super, non-sci fi, non-manga comics....

Not being sarcastic either, I seriously like it. Fuck super heroes.

I enjoy:
The Sword (its kinda super hero-ish but with flair)
Walking Dead
Mouse Guard (better than it first appears)
The Unwritten

Might be worth a try to check out Joss Whedon's collection of x-men stories (I've heard thy are good for those who fell out)

Also, I picked up I Kill Giants when I firt jumped back in and enjoyed it. Its self contained making it low-risk.

I'm the only person on earth who disliked Y though. Read the entire series and slowly fell out of love as it went. My wife enjoyed it, bu I thought the writing was like Juno or something. Everyone had the same voice and they were all far too cutesy and clever for me.

:D Yeah, I thought about changing my reply after I reread the OP. Meh, fuck it, they're awesome books.

Interesting. My wife has been reading that, I suppose I should check it out.

Hmm, lots of interesting titles to look into.

Kinda light on Sci-Fi recommendations though. Is there not really that much out these days?

For sci-fi, I'd recommend Orbiter by Warren Ellis, which is about some scientists figuring out what happened to a space shuttle that returns after a ten year disappearance.

Ocean is also not bad, although a bit more like a dumb Hollywood blockbuster.

Longer than Dave Sim and Gerhard?

DC Universe:
Identity Crisis - Great
then to books leading to Identity Crisis - Pretty good
Infinite Crisis - Really good
52 - Pretty good
Countdown - Not so good
The Final Crisis - Meh
Blackest Night - (Have yet to read but seems to be sounding great so far, will read once it finishes)

Am I missing anything?
