Wario Ware (et al.) disappreciation thread

You know, I just don't get what the deal is with this game. Yes, it's whacky and hilarious, and very pick-up-and-play-able, but to me, itt's elusive as to why it has garnered such a large fanbase, paricularly here. It remains one of those titles that I've bought based on the praise, but returned it straight back to the store (yes, I played it all the way through).

Maybe I'm just not old school enough, but I still love simple games that have an addictive quality - you know, like Chu Chu Rocket, Kurukurukururin, Rez, and Tetris remains one of my fave games ever.

Viewtiful Joe is also a similar title - stylish, fun, maybe even refreshing, but a much larger fanbase than I would have thought. Not my kettle of fish.

Are there anygames you guys simply 'don't get'? Games that everyone else seemed to have loved to the point where it's there favourite on the system, or GotY level, but you simply went, "HUH?!"?

I agree with pretty much all of this. Wario Ware, Superstar Saga, Metroid Prime, Jak II, Viewtiful Joe, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Halo... All not as good as I would have thought- disliking some more than others.

Yeah - sometimes I stop and think, "maybe I'm just being contrary to be an individual...", but I'm right up there with loving mainstream with games like Zelda and Spider-man2. As for Metroid Prime - I love it to bits, and think it's fantastic, but it's not so much Metroid in 3D, but a FPS with Metroid elements.

My list would include Halo 1 & 2, GTA: SA (preferred Vice City vastly), and Rainbow Six 3.

But above all others, the game I just don't get is Splinter Cell.

Katamari Damacy.
Nintendo DS.

I have only liked ONE zelda game. That was the GB one. I haven't ever finished any other, but yet I keep buying them, telling myself I'll like it again, and they all seem the same to me.

*dodges tomatoes*

First person shooters. While i can see the appeal, they just don't do it for me outside of the occasional split-screen/LAN party deal, which are a love/hate relationship since i never know the maps.

In regards to genres, I can honestly say that I genuinly enjoy them all even if I'm not that interested in it (take Nascar racing and sports games for example).

The only recent game examples are FFX (and X2), Kingdom Hearts and MGS2 but that's it really. While I can see the merit in them and appreciate the beauty and effort, as games they don't impress at all (IMO of course).

I thought I was in love with FPS as well. Turns out it was just Rare FPS games. :\

Well, actually, as much as I love Zelda (Oot =best game ever) as a series, you're absolutely right - They ARE all the same. Sailing = Link's FLUDD. I simply love it, so I normally want more of the same.

(actually, Majora's Mask is fairly different)

On a side note, a friend of mine has given up on computer and videogame stuff (as in not spending large amounts of money on upgrtading PC's for games, and getting new consoles and stuff - still partial to large sessions), saying that he's played everything there is to play. Everything coming out now is a glorified version os something that's been before, and unless a game or system comes along that provides a truly unique and different way of playing, he's going to stay that way.

I can see his point.

Totally agree. I always feel like the odd man out because of it. I've only finished LA. The others I either seem to quit very early, or half way through. Minish Cap offers some hope though, I really enjoyed what I played of it enough that had me willing to finish it, but we'll see.

Another game I know that's like that is... god I can just feel the rape from the fans. Skies of Arcadia. I never got into the story or the characters. They all came off really generic and bland to me. Plus the battles were tedious, slow, and too frequent. The only redeeming feature from it, for me, were the ship battles, and I'd love to come across a game of a different style, with something similar.

My list:

Metroid games -- can't get past the controls
3D Mario games -- can't get past the controls
GTA games -- fun for about 10 minutes
Halo 1/2 -- fun, but very overrated
RPGs -- where do I begin...
Viewtiful Joe 1/2 -- I just don't get it
Splinter Cell games -- *yawn*

Well said. Too true, too true.

Maybe I've been spoiled by Zero Mission, Fusion, and Prime... but one game I could never get into was Super Metroid. Everyone always says it's the best game of the series (or one of the best games -ever-), but I tried it after Fusion and Zero and hated it. That game just doesn't compare to the newer games IMO. Samus moves so slowly, and the actual game just bores me so much that it is a chore to play. Prime is definately my favorite Metroid, and I can't wait to open Prime 2 on Christmas day.

I never could really get into the original Metroid (for the NES)

For my money, Zillion for the SMS was alot more fun.

Halo 2, overrated beyond belief.

oh yeah, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, how could anyone like a battle system like that?

Same for Tales of Symphonia, complete with horrible dialogue (like BoF).

KOTOR...what a step backwards after Baldur's Gate, a complete dissapointement.

could never get into the Tony Hawk games, thought it was because I'm not into extreme sports games but then again I've had no problem liking the SSX games

Haters suck!

Rez. I'm a big fan of Sega and of the Space Channel 5 series, so I wanted to like Rez quite a bit. I was really looking forward to the game based on preview screenshots, but I got the game and was completely disappointed. You have no control of your character's lateral movement, so gameplay boils down to holding down X and wiggling the cursor around until all the "enemies" have been locked on. Rinse and repeat for an hour. Whoop-de-fucking-shit. Good thing EB still had its return policy and I was able to get Victorious Boxers.

It's annoying when people on GA treat this as some type of unappreciated masterpiece. Bunch of stoners.

I also want Minish Cap. I'm starting to question my intelligence. :lol

You know, this isn't a bad thing (a shooter on rails) if done right. Panzer Dragoon for instance is pretty similar in game style although you do have a bit more mobility while you're on the rails.

That being said.

Yes. Rez is not worthy of all the unanimous praise. I mean, it's cool and everything... just not -that- cool. And I've owned it since Jp launch date for the Dreamcast so I didn't even play it because of hype.

Mediocrity of Arcadia also comes to mind.

Those are the two games loved by message board people everywhere, and only by message board people. They're just average games.

Just like Katamari Damacy. And Rez >:(

Excellent.

I'd say I can get into pretty much any type of decent game given the time, though my suckiness at racers and fighters sometimes hinders my progress in those genres.

Those are the two games loved by message board people everywhere, and only by message board people.

And that's supposed to imply that they're not good? Oh no, the impeccable and unassailable tastes of the generaly public don't find a game as good as people who like video games so much they post on message boards about it, must prove that they're average.

not sure if this will attract a contract on my life, but I don't get the massive appeal for Pikmin 2. It's an okay game and well put together, but it's not as great as everyone was making out.

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. If I'm part of the general public, then wth am I doing with an obscure Japan-only United Gaming Artists Dreamcast game that I bought on release date?

My stance is this:

General public is totally irrelevant to me. In fact, message board opinion is also irrelevant to me. They just generally are more informed about gaming than the general public. But it doesn't mean that all message board people have a vast amount of experience and exposure to gaming. They're just a big step up from the average game customer.

Very few message board people (not limited to this board) have the knowledge and experience that would cause me to consider games I hadn't already been interested in. They exist, but there's very few.

I'm just trying to bring to light that there is a "mainstream" even among fan communities. Is that bad? Well, no. But not everyone has the same tastes. For example, I find Rez far too simplistic and is neither as decked out rhythmically as SC5pt2 nor as gameplay oriented as Panzer Dragoon. It's neither here nor there, and just a half-blend of both.

Counter-Strike, all others pale in comparison. I played it for a few hours back in high-school, it was fun. 6 years later, why are people still playing?

I don't get GTA 3 (the only one I've played)--it seems like little more than a series of fetch quests to me.

I don't get Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, either, but I think I need to give it a second chance.

Rez
Shenmue
Halo/2
Counterstrike
Goldeneye (whoo! An FPS that wasn't that great even when it came out that runs at a blistering 6 fps!)
Mario 64 (adequate at best)

And many more that I don't feel like thinking of.

I'll agree with Rez. It's pretty as hell, and I like the music, but I won't be playing it more than once a year.
