Was John Frusciante the compositional lifeblood of Red Hot Chili Peppers?

His 5 records streak from the early 2000's is amazinG.

Shame he went ap(h)e(x)shit with electronic music in the past years.

The real stand out records, for me at least, from that era are the two Ataxia records. I don't think any of his albums have matched how raw and soulful Automatic Writing and AW II are.

It's also his playing on the Chili Peppers records and all of his solo work that convinced me to learn how to play guitar.

I'm going to have to say yes. RHCP just isn't the same without him. Their album sales also reflect this. Their new stuff, while not bad, is nowhere near as enjoyable for me compared to their previous works.

Though One Hot Minute is still great, but that's because they had Dave Navarro.

In the context of RHCP's best years, definitely, but he's a better solo artist anyway. They were holding him back to be honest. At least the early stuff.

RHCP is such a strange band, they gave gone through so many guitarists but they still remain. The core is always going to be Anthony and Flea, they are the band, but their peaks are with Frusciante. He forced the band to think differently and grow. I do like all of their albums from the self-titled to I'm With You. It's a damn shame Hillel died so young, he was immensely talented and to see his evolution would've been incredible.

And Navarro was great too, but the band had to work very hard to produce any music. It just wasn't a natural chemistry like with Hillel/Irons and Frusciante/Smith. They couldn't sustain it, but OHM is still a really good album probably because of that difficulty. Flea really had to step up on the bass for that.

Josh is a great musician and the natural replacement for Frusciante. He's John's protege, collaborator and he toured with the band on their final tour with Frusciante (allowing them to play This Velvet Glove live for the first time, one of their best). He's only had 1 album so far and I'd say it's comparable to Mother's Milk. I look forward to their next one, they have a new producer and probably feel more comfortable with the new chemistry.

Yes, 100%. The other 3 are incredibly talented by Frusciante was able to harness all their creativity in the most effective fashion in a song. You can really hear this on the albums he isn't present.

imagine if he produced the next rhcp album. rick rubin is officially out.

Lol this would be amazing. Danger Mouse is producing it though.
Also, for everyone who wants to hear more Froosh in RHCP, if you haven't already you should check out the b-sides, a lot of them are even better than material on the record (but maybe less marketable?):

When I hear Josh blow solos live, it really makes me miss John. I'm With You wasn't terrible, but I'm really wondering if they'll ever come close to the heights of the Frusciante albums again.

It's really frustrating to me, because John, Flea, and Chad are God-tier to me, some of my favorite artists ever for their respective instruments, and they had a chemistry that was just unmatchable.

Goddamn I would kill to go back and see them during the Stadium Arcadium tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG7YDCJ8Ad8

We'll see after the next album. Josh has been finding his place in the band, and I hope he's able to channel his talent and deliver some quality stuff. Not sure if RHCP's going to ever sound the same, but I'm fine with that.

That whole album, The Will To Death, is ridiculously good. There's not a single song on it I don't enjoy immensely. Same for Inside of Emptiness which he recorded only a few months before that.

Yeah The Will To Death is my favourite album of his. I can listen to it front to back over and over without getting sick of it.

Listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers since middle school, I have always admired John's guitar work especially his solos when they play live. Dude, made me adopt some of his guitar techniques that he would tend to do.

But yea, I always found him as like the core creative piece that really drove & push the band to explore and expand their sound. I dunno, without him, RHCP's I'm With You album was just eh, it's alright. But we'll see how it really goes with their next album.

I don't know when he was with the band but there has never been a more boring and safe period for the Red Hot Chili Peppers as we've seen in the last 15 years. Holy jeez, it's the same thing over and over and over.

?

Those 3 albums were Frusciante's albums. I like that more than rap/funk early 90s RHCP.

I guess I'm the opposite. I like their first 5 albums and that's it. I'm old though, so I've never heard of anyone preferring their "new" stuff.

Yep.

I'm not sure how you justify that the music in By The Way is anyway the same as that in I'm With You. People complain that the music isn't like the early stuff but 50 year olds trying to act like 20 something's would be ridiculous.

It doesn't have to sound like the old stuff but it should at least be interesting.

Sorry for the bump, but I've been on a RHCP kick today.

While their peak moments were with John, I think the rest of the band still has it in them to make great music. They've overcome obstacles before; I think they can do it again.

Looking forward to how they fare with their next album.

They just go by singles. If you actually listen to the albums they would know that's not the case. For instance I Like Dirt, Warm Tape, Readymade, and Ethiopia are very distinct songs. But Around the World, By the Way, Dani California, and Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie kind of all have a similar vibe.

Eh, I'm torn. He was on BSSM which is their best album by far, but he was also on Californication and I can't stand that album, sounds so whiney.

Yeah, Frusciante was a key component of that band and I lost interest once he left.
So many iconic guitar riffs, and good backing vocals. Most of their great songs seem built around Frusciante's riffs.
He has a pretty solid catalogue of solo records too. Though I haven't been into his more recent efforts.
All you really need to do is look at The Empyrean to realize that this guy was the true mastermind behind that band.

I think the Chilli Peppers are just getting old, man.

Although Frusciante is top 5 guitarists imo.

edit: People who like One Hot Minute over Blood Sugar are crazy in my eyes.
