Websites are getting wise to ad-blocker

I've noticed more and more that website programmers are getting wise to ad-blocker and are catching it before a website loads and requesting that I turn it off. Is there a way around that or is Ad-blocker and similar apps time in the sun almost gone?

Yeah, 9/10 times if that pops up, I close the tab and find another website about the story.

1/10 if it's the ONLY place, I'll load up an incognito tab to do what needs to be done.

Yep, this is pointless, a very small percentage of sites actually contain unique stuff no one else can offer. In all other cases you just go elsewhere.

That's been my response thus far. But, it's getting to the point where even major news outlets and multimedia websites are doing it. And I kinda want to read some of those articles. Is there not some kind of update I can apply that will counteract their counter-actions?

Yeah I just go somewhere else. Fuck intrusive ads. They need to find another way to monetize other than selling off our data via google and others.

depending on what adblocker(s) you use and the site, sometimes you can manually remove prompts like those. with uBlock Origin you can right click > Block element... and manually select what you want to hide.

This is what I came to suggest. I suggest entering "element picker mode" on uBlock and disabling any element of a site you dislike, be it an ad or not. I've even been able to change the formatting of websites by blocking formatting scripts (via uBlock's "logger" feature), or invisible sidebars.
When you get a popup asking you to disable your adblocker, they'll often come with an invisible layer covering the page, to prevent you from scrolling. Be sure to block that layer.

Try Nano Adblocker with Nano Defender

Anybody else ever get that smug black guy on the pop up asking you to remove adblock? Like are you REALLY using adblock, whiteboi???

99% of stories are just coming from the Associated Press. They copy what they say, and then put it behind an ad-blocker wall.

Just go straight to the source.

And honestly, it's a better practice to find the handful of news sites you actually truly respect, and trust. They're rare. And then consider signing up to one of them with a subscription. Usually it's something absurdly cheap, and if they're actually doing real journalism and they're actually trustworthy, then they probably deserve the money.

If my adblock does not work i refuse to turn it off and go else where.
Also on some sites you can press F5 to refresh! Then quickly scroll the page down a little further each F5 press. Beats turning adblock off.

Partly another reason why i get my news from Era and here. News gets posted without me having to worry about this stuff.

It's been said before, but it deserves to be said again.

Stop visiting the website.

Unless they offer the "continue with ad blocker" option.

I remember a time when they straight up refused to let you use the site, then there seemed to be some internet law made which forbade them from doing that without giving you the chance to disable ad blocker, etc, anyway it seems like the legal side of things is in a state of ongoing revision.

UBlock lets you block those blockers.

Sometimes it's a bit more complicated than that and requires a little html knowledge and/or UBlock logger knowledge.
But people on the UBlock subreddit are always super helpful with those problems, in my experience.

Which one are you using? This isn't the case at all. IF you're using adblock or adblock plus for example, you're getting more ads because the plugin has started accepting payments from advertisers to let ads through. i.e some adblockers are turning to corporate shit.

Pro-tip: use ublock origin.

Ok I will try that out tomorrow

Whatever adblocker you're using, make sure you have the right filter lists installed. Check for "annoyances lists", they usually remove anti Adblock popups very well.

Is there anything for iOS for a iPad that would do the same?
AdGuard. Even lets you choose blocklists and make your own rules (pro version costs 2 bucks). I use it on my iPad and iPhone, but you have to use Safari.

If the website is providing useful stuff then just disable adblocker on it.

Websites are not my enemy, I'm happy with some adverts if they are hiring staff who put effort in.

If it's shitty popup video stuff then stop visiting.

I don't run into adblock that often, but the one site (CBS) where it does pop up, it's annoying.

So far, I am still using the "turn it on and off method" whereas I turn it on while the vid is loading and quickly turn it off (using the icon at the top right of Chrome). The adblock cannot catch up to this method so far and I am able to watch videos unbothered.

And people wonder why journalism is shit these days.
I have never used ad blocker and I've never had a need to. What kind of weird intrusive websites do you guys visit since you can't even let them have the peanuts they work for?

I honestly don't browse the internet that much (outside of work), but I do watch vids on one subscription internet TV network so yeah they want to advertise heavily.

Other than that, it's not really an issue. I generally enjoy YouTube ads, because they tend to relate to the content I watch, which is basically music production stuff.

Websites are free to show us publicity we didnt ask for, just as we are free to leave if we dont like it.

If someone wants to run a website, they should find some more humble ways of getting funds for it that are not based on pissing off its users.

But yeah, the law that rules everything is always 'fuck the people I dont know'.

I don't mind as long as there's a "no thx" button. If it's mandatory then I just go look for what I want somewhere else.

I do however have it turned off for the few sites I enjoy and visit frequently

Adblockers didn't make journalism bad, onlinead based revenue did. When your revenue is made by clicks you start writing clickbaity shit.

I wouldn't have adblock installed if ads were just animated gifs. But too often it's CPU hogging garbage doing god knows what. The worst is the sites that auto play video.

If the site can guarantee me it will be free of malvertising, I will unblock it. In the meantime, they can fuck off.
