Searched Google Talk, nothing.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into text and also voice communications.

Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's Instant Messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday.

Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

Google rules

although, for some reason google desktop 2 doesnt really like my puter.

Ill use it if it has emoticon features that equal msn.

And i can finally get rid of trillian.

Google can do no wrong.. but everyone here uses MSN.. its gonna be hard to change peoples

can't really see this taking off unless you can use your AIM or MSN account with it too, along the lines of Trillian.

Yeah, you can connect to multiple services with this.

yeah, just read the whole article.

Separately, independent journalist Om Malik on his blog at http://gigaom.com/ pointed to technical clues that suggest Google is preparing to run an instant messaging service based on an open-source system known as Jabber.

Jabber technology would allow Google instant message users to connect with established IM systems that also work with Jabber, including America Online's ICQ and Apple Computer Inc.'s iChat, Malik said..

goodie, now we just need a small footprint and no ads...

If this client can access multiple clients like AIM and Yahoo and has an message window setup like Adium for Mac then I'm sold.

I'm intrigued. If it can connect to AIM but doesn't have those fucking horrible audio/video ads, then I'm down for it without question.

try Aimutation you can disable all that

but if it linked with AIM, that would rock

This would be news if it wasn't reported every day. Besides, short of ironing out file transfers and video/audio conferencing, I see little reason to step away from Adium.

It was just reported today, although there were rumors earlier.

MS Messenger system is BY FAR the king of instant messaging here in Spain.

How is it around there, fellow GAFers?
AIM first, MSN second, and yahoo third...I think.

AIM is integrated into PDAs, mobile phones, etc. You can even chat through aim with a normal text message capable phone.

We need a program that accepts chat through A-ha.
A man can dream...

I wanted really badly to eliminate all the other messengers once I started using Skype (and got most of my friends to start using it) but somehow some other stuff creeps over too. I still have vskype installed for video (why can't original skype have that!) and #&$^$ICQ for a bunch of old friends who use it.

Canada uses MSN Messenger.

I like it. I don't want to switch.
Then again, if it's AMAZING, it might catch on... just like MSN replaced ICQ.

Here's something fun I just found while bored:

ping talk.google.com

You should get an IP address like 64.233.167.125. If you enter that into your browser it will redirect to http://www.google.com/talk. I believe the jabber servers are already running - just that we don't know the exact way to log into them.

iChat on OSX supports jabber natively so I've just been pinging away at it and at one point it accepts my login message and then disconnects me.

Phoenix: old news. :)

Jabber does the entire process with the address, until you don't put in a valid user/pass.

I've moved onto to throwing XML at the server directly via java to see how it responds and what services it supports :)

I'm all connected up to this shit. None of my Gmail using friends are though, it seems. :(

What server, username, and password (note: just give the format of the username and password).

I'm going to introspect this baby tonight :)

msn is basically nonexistant here. everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has AIM.

MSN for teh win! I remember when everyone switched over from ICQ, it was ridiculous. And btw, I HAAAAAAAATE AIM. It's retarded how you can only have one screename, and it usually ends up being so stupid. Why do people even bother with it :-\

The cool thing about it from what I remember though was sharing pictures, as they'd show up fullsize in the convo window, really convenient!

That's the nice thing about having an unusual screen name.. I have yet to find anywhere that it was taken before I got to it. :D

From what I could tell, in America pretty much everyone uses AIM. Everyone everywhere else uses MSN.

And I'll be glad to use something other than AIM. Using a hacked DeadAIM for so long has gotten kind of annoying. Especially if they keep the format open and you can do a lot of custom stuff with it.

I'm connected to it now and introspecting its goodness :)

ahhh, looks like you can connect using the jabber protocol if you have a gmail address. The connection is the same :lol

So far I've found that it supports the full XMPP protocol, support chat, group chat, and packetized chat which is probably how they are pumping voice around.

I need to pull down the latest XMPP spec from jabber.org to get more information. They are pretty much just putting up raw jabber servers with some apparently automatic mods in the backend, perhaps like AIM bots or something.

This has HUGE implications for developers as finally XMPP has a REAL global backer so you don't have to sacrifice everything to write applications and middleware that work over that protocol as google is handlining the load.

Sorry, nothing personal. Just tired of Google this, Google that...I read about 100 different speculative stories on them, most of which lack any basis.

Anyway, I'm not really impressed, but then again the only two services Google has really sold me on has been Google itself and Google Maps. Being a Mac user, there really isn't as much of a need for a good chat client as there is on the PC side in my experience; Adium is great for just about anything, and iChat picks up the pieces for more consistent file transfers and audio/video conferencing. But hey, good for Google I suppose. I do wish they'd refine their UI more, because while I love the simplicity, it kills my eyes.

Wow pretty cool. Everyone in my office has just switched over to using it. I'm not so familiar with Jabber and won't have a chance to look at the protocol for a while but...how were all of my addressbook contacts from gmail auto-completed by my Jabber client as I was adding them?

Haha, man. I'll finally be moving away from AIM if this is good. Hopefully it does what Gmail did for email.

Started receiving messages from gmail.com

"The broken link has been fixed. Thanks for being our first users! "

Does anybody have a gmail invite I could use since you seem to need an account to run this? I never bothered before cause I never thought i'd need that much space but i'd like to try this out. Thanks
