Weird event from Nintendo

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I do understand that all gears are shifting towards the Switch 2. With that said, The whole conference outside of maybe 2 or 3 titles were full of Indie games or even worse mobile types of games. My expectations for Prime 4 were too high because I was highly unimpressed. I get it about the culture divide but the so called "host" was very awkward. I hope they aren't using that same type of format for the Switch 2. My only logic thinking on why they would do this Direct was maybe the Switch 2 is coming out later than expected. It's just speculation on my part but maybe they are trying to move was Switch 1 stock until the Switch 2 releases in the fall. Again, I hope I am wrong but we will find out next week. Metroid Prime 4, An old rpg remake, and a bunch of Indie and weird titles filled the event. You got to wonder why this deserved its own Direct. The only hope was getting this crap out of the way to Show All the goods for the Switch 2 next week. Stay tuned.

They had a, imo, surprising amount of Switch 1 titles reaching all the way into 2026, as well a contracts with partners that they had show/advertise for.

It makes very little sense to show this stuff after the Switch 2 blowout since it’d all be buried by more impressive and interesting stuff right out of the gate.

The weird thing to me is the timing. This should’ve aired in February.

What time is it?

The timing was odd in that it was late, but it made sense to have a Direct when you have multiple first and third party games to announce. That's the whole purpose of Directs.

Looking back on it, I do see the logic behind the new first party games. They are two biggest Nintendo franchises yet to come to Switch and are popular with the crowd who are unlikely to get a Switch 2 anytime soon.

Oh and the host was Shinya Takahashi, the most senior person in Nintendo's main development division. He's been doing Directs for many years now so I absolutely expect him to be at the Switch 2 event.

I could be happy with literally just Mario Kart 9 for the rest of the year.

Today doesn't change anything. Switch 2 day 1 baby.

They are just promoting some smaller titles, its good for those smaller companies to get their games shown on this stage, even if we dont care about those games its a good move from Nintendo to showcase the smaller guys as well.

This was a typical Nintendo direct as has been done a few times per year for many years outside of the fact they will announce Switch 2 titles and show off Switch 2 details next week.

I think it was pretty weird to have three cross-gen games (two of them slated for 2026 at that) shown there. Metroid Prime 4 is guaranteed to show up in the next one, the rest could have been saved for further directs.
I was with the impression that they still had some Switch 1 only stuff before the Switch 2 launch, be it remasters or whatever, but that was not the case.

I think they wanted to send a message of "we won't forget about Switch owners". I wouldn't be surprised if the 2026 games are Switch 1 only and not cross gen.

I highly doubt it, releasing games exclusive to past gen consoles is an outdated model that doesn't even make sense to continue to this day, at least not for the platform holder pushing its new console.
The 3DS > Switch 1 transition was a totally different beast compared to Switch 1 > Switch 2, and even then, you still saw stuff like Sushi Striker or the Captain Toad re-release being cross-gen. Not to mention BOTW, of course.

It doesn't really make sense to me either, I just think this will be another time where Nintendo does something that doesn't make sense.

They wouldn't be exclusive to the old platform given Switch 2 is b/c. ;)

I thought the timing was weird when it was initially announced, but after seeing the Direct, I think they scheduled it this close to the Switch 2 event because the "Direct" was actually a Trojan Horse to get as many people as possible to download the Nintendo Today app prior to the beginning of the Switch 2 advertising cycle.

I think they also wanted to announce the new "digital cartridges" scheme outside of the Switch 2 Direct because they knew that some people would see it as basically a new kind of DRM and others would just be bewildered by it, so they didn't want discourse about it to distract from their other Switch 2 announcements.

And I'm sure they had some existing contractual obligations to third parties to show games that weren't a good fit for the Switch 2 Direct.

So roll all of that together and you get what we saw: a weird Frankenstein Direct that pleases no one but fulfills some opaque corporate goals and will be forgotten in less than a week.

I know this either is a shitpost or OP is severely mentally retarded to call Shinya Takahashi "the so called host", but allow me to remember the people opening this thread in good faith that the best selling original Switch game is Animal Crossing New Horizons, that "weird title" game. The original Tomodachi Life sold well over 6 million copies on the 3DS. You know where I'm going with this.

To be quite fair, Shinya Takahashi isn't really quite as known (for his role, i.e. general manager of the game production division) as the likes of Shuhei Yoshida, Hermen Hulst, Matt Booty or even Phil Harrison.

I think they really wanted to get the message out there that they are simply not going to abandon the old hardware anytime soon. Can't get/find the new Switch within the launch frame, here is plenty to tide you over. Still selling games for the millions of original Switch owners is still a lucrative idea. I don't think they will be done until Switch 2 reaches a third of its life span or possibly its half-life. There may be no more directs for the original Switch but games should still be coming for it.
In reality the Switch being supported for 8 years+ should be seen as pro instead of making Switch owners antsy for a new one sooner.

Go slob his knob some more. I don't care who he is. He looks weird as a presenter

After a day to think. It makes sense why would they release anything that could take away from people potentially buying switch 2 hardware. I bet the games shown are compatible on switch 2.
which shouldn’t be surprising

I’m waiting to see what they have instore for switch 2. I doubt it will be at all the surprise level of f-zero kid Icarus etc. but yeah Mario kart 9. Probably some upgrades to switch games MP4 switch 2 version2 and then a maybe a tentpole IP to show off what the switch 2 can do plus a few big name third party ports.

But if it turns out to be a whole host of JRPG/mobile games I’ll not be excited

This Direct was a bunch of stuff they didn't want bogging down the Switch 2 blowout. Which means, mostly Switch 1 games and catering the base that won't care about upgrading to Switch 2 right away (or ever).

They didn't show any Switch 2 games (Metroid is a Switch 1 game). It's not really a hope they're getting Switch 1 out of the way first, more an observation.

High point of the post for me: maybe Nintendo is trying to sell Switch 1 stock

The event just reminded me Nintendo isn't for me. I like indie games from time to time, but the event looked like something out of the Dreamcast > GameCube era and mobile games. I'm not part of their audience and that's fine, Nintendo is doing very well, but so much of it is just a style and era I've moved on from. Even their bigger titles on the horizon, like Metroid Prime 4, I just have zero interest in.

Yeah it was such a weird event I mean what kind of company actually supports their console all through its life right up to the end of its lifespan it’s such a bizarre thing to do. Can’t have people enjoying new games now.

Think of it this way. Would Sony have held an exclusive event for their Playstation 1 in january 2000 when everyone was waiting for the PS2 with bated breath?

We all knew this would be the scraps. The Switch is on its way out. Just the fact that some things are still coming to it should be enough to keep people happy tbh

Honestly that's rich.

We are saying on here that the best REASON to build a gaming PC is to play one of the most mediocre games in recent memory.

They can't make a game as bad as many of the recently released AAA games that some of us bought, very few can, so why are we hating? What other games are we making room for here?

Oh no, a new metroid game, quick get it out of here so I can play Star Wars Outlaws.

Enough Ubisoft hate? Let's just look at another game. Jedi Survivor. A game many loved and played, including myself. In retrospect, that game is so shitty, like, honestly. Would anyone ever go back and play that game again? Yet here we are dissing metroid. It's upside down world.

it really felt like a teaser for switch 2 , even though the said no switch 2 before it aired they still showed games with no release date and also dates in 2026 full well knowing switch 2 will be out soon. oh and an app we can keep you updated daily about switch 2 just to tease you even more till launch day comes.

It was a weird thing indeed.

I thought they would for as many remastered as they could get as much money as they can with a big "Also on Switch 2", while the next week we would get the big guns to seal the deal in case someone doesnt have an Switch already.

Still there is a lot coming to the original Switch, even many on 2026, and it is nice thing to see. Yeah, the big stuff that still remains is Metroid Prime 4, but I can say there is atleast something interesting for someone on the game line showed.
