Well, that about kills any interest I have in "His Dark Materials" movies . . .

Please. If you didn't see this coming from a mile away, you have to be blind.

I would say the more disturbing news is that they shitcanned Tom Stoppard.....and that the daemons are going to be actual animals (I was expecting CG). If this thing looks like Dr. Doolittle I will be relatively annoyed.

Who is in charge of their marketing department?

Anyone in their right (heh) mind would know that this movie is probably better off attracting the attention of the Christian Right. They'll shower attention and publicity on a film like no other.

Just ask the makers of Kinsey and Michael Moore.

If it wasn't going to be aimed predominantly at children, it might be a good idea to upset Christian wackos. But even a moderate Christian parent will probably hesitate to take their kid to "the God-hating movie".

Amusingly, the changes that they are talking about work perfectly well for the first novel in the series.....which is my favorite one anyway.

His Dark Materials is fiction and for entertainment. It's not a biopic or a documentary and it likely has a budget that'll top both of those movies combined and then some. From a marketing perspective, they need to bring as many people to the movie as they can and that means reducing the "offensive" material in the stories.

I suspect they'll replace the role of the church with a fascist government that's trying to take over the worlds. I'd put money on it actually. Everyone hates Nazis and I'd bet they model the Magisterium around Nazis.

i didn't realize this series was so interesting. i'm almost done with the dark tower novels, as depressing as that is; maybe this is next.

How is the Dark Tower series? I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King but I'm kinda desperate to read some new fantasy stuff. :(

Opinions differ but I personally thought the conclusion to His Dark Materials to be very depressing.

And there will still be a stink about it due to the source material. :(
