Went from Windows 8.1 back to 7, some thoughts

When you have such a cluttered and messy desktop, I don't think you're qualified to say whether something looks horrible or not.

Not into Windows 8 (I find it annoying to use for too many reasons), but I'll never understand the Windows 95 purists.

But I'm not arguing about whether something looks horrid or not - I said that I didn't care how it looked.
I'm arguing about functionality and usability. And my computer is very functional and usable for me - and that I am able to do that perfectly fine in Windows 7, without having to deal with all of Windows 8's annoyances.

So is 8.1 and Metro for me. Your desktop would be so.. slow.. for me.

I'm on Win7 and have been for over four years. There's still a part of me that thinks of Windows 7 as "that new version of Windows". I can't be the only one.

The reasons the start screen is superior to a craptonne of icons have already been mentioned. It pops over whatever number of windows you have open at a button press and puts you back to it in another, it's searchable, you can have different sizes for more or less important things, live icons for mail and weather are nice, etc etc.

There is a single button Show Desktop function in Windows 7. Stuff on the Desktop is searchable, and indexed by default. Desktop has the equivalent functionality of live icons in the form of Gadgets, though I can't say I know anyone who actually uses them - most likely because browser tabs are already sufficient.
