What’s the minimum amount of money per hour you would need to do a job?

for my freelance business? $130 an hour, but I've hit that point in my career where I stopped doing projects by hour and just give a guaranteed quote, that way if I don't really want to do the job, I quote and absolutely insane number and if they accept it then its worth the annoyance.

For a random job of something I have no skills at? Probably $45 an hour.

Depends what the job is.

If it's a boring monotonous job, then it has to pay really, really well

If it's international travel with a company credit card, my own office and freedom to make money, then i'll do it for bills + expenses.

I think I saw in the Apple ARM thread that you do motion gfx (or compositing or fx)? That's quite the hourly rate--but then I also know that motion pays well. Hats off to you.

(not stalking, just remembered randomly)

Depends on how many hours and days you work a week. You could make 20 bucks a hour but only work 25 and that wouldn't get you anywhere.

I do full video commercial production, from start to finish, along with consulting, studio construction and startup and major live and event production. Basically I've become a go to in the field for anything and everything video production related in the midwest and north east markets (and Florida lately too), be it commercials (include 1 superbowl spot under my hat!), CEO/Investor presentations, Events (and I present at Adobe Max every few years) and lately building company wide social video systems (think youtube for internal comms, that market has exploded with Covid making so many remote workers now). $130/hour is in line for high end video work, the market pays $80 - $130/hour based off experience once you have a decent set of examples. The key is just having a kick ass real and a good network of connections. I've actually never once advertised my services, I've just connected with enough people that they call me first when they need work done. Plus I work a salary job too as my primary income :)

Someone personally told me $50,000 per year was poverty level.

I live below my means so I'd be living comfortably on that. I'd need to make more if I ever get married, tho.

For me, I'd have to make $15-18/hr just to have an ok Apt and to pay bills, buy food, etc. I don't go out much as I'm an ambivert that leans more towards introvert. Because after taxes, I'd need it to be that much. I don't get frivolous things. I only have a Switch and plan to switch out my phone mid next year (I've had it for 2 years)... No Xbox Series X or PS5 until maybe 2022... Saving money is already hard so... Yeah.

I usually work for abroad companies and charge in US Dollars. If I make around USD$2000 a month (which is usually my goal) I can live pretty decently here in Brazil.

A USD$ 5k/month job would be a fucking dream...

How common are 60k/year jobs in the US? Too hard to get for locals?

for white collar pretty common. Even the youngest person on my staff, right out of college, makes 55k a year.

to make 5k/month take home (after taxes) you need a salary around 90-100k.

I feel my quality of life changed when I started making 100k a year. The change from that to 200k a year was much more subtle.

Geez, a 100k job pays 30-40k in taxes!? o_O

Thinking of it though, I guess it's not that different around here, the catch being that the taxes are deducted directly from companies, so we don't even count that as part of our salary...

But really congrats on having a career.

Got it, sorry to sound smug, I've worked really hard to build my career, my own business and life. I started right out of college making 30k a year at a low key ad agency. Worked my ass off to get a name for myself and climb the latter, took 13 years to get to this point. I grew up in a military family with a single mom living in trailer parks outside of the bases, so I had lots of incentive to work hard to pull my family out of that life
