I can understand if you follow a religion where the religion says not to eat a certain animal because it's sacred, but it seems that there's lots of non-religious negative reactions to certain animals being eaten.

For example, a lot of Americans find it morally wrong to eat a dog. Sure, I can see how you might see someone eating dogmeat and remember your own pet that you love as a family member, but what if someone walked up to you while you were having a pork chop and told you they have a pet pig that they love as much as you love your dog? Should you feel bad about eating pork because someone else has a pet of the same species?

I would eat a fucking unicorn if they existed. No animal is morally wrong to eat, there is only tasty animals and non-tasty animals.

sarah jessica parker

and to a lesser degree, hilary swank in some regions

other than that, none. if i had to, i would eat a human to survive.

No animal.

I feel no animals are morally wrong to eat, but I myself would probably not eat dog or cat meat.

Some consideration has to be given to

1) Rare animals

2) Animals that cannot be bred or raised in captivity

3) Animals that take a long time to reach maturity

Blue whales are a great example. Very low numbers. Impossible to breed for consumption. Long lifespan and take several years to reach maturity. It would be immoral to consume them knowing that it could easily lead to extinction.

my great uncle ate dog meat in the phillipines during world war II. he said he hadn't had any real food (only c rations or whatever) for weeks and it was the best stew he had ever eaten. went back for seconds and thirds.

You can say "I want to prevent people from eating this animal" without declaring it morally wrong.

The reason is one of morality.

There is no other reason not to hunt blue whales to extinction.

It is a moral obligation that drives us to preserve species, which in turn, drives us to craft laws that restrict or severely limit the hunting of certain species.

For what reasons would you not feel open to dog or cat meat?

They're pets. You live with them everyday, hug them, play with them, love them. Eating cat or dog meat just feel wrong after this.

I bet that if we could play, hug and love cows and chickens just like we do with dogs and cats, most people would feel the same way toward eating them.

Personally, I draw the line on things we know (at least at this point in our scientific understanding) can feel pain. If it can feel pain, I don't eat it.

Been vegetarian almost 4 years

I don't know really, it just feels wrong. I don't have a good explanation, unfortunately. Probably has something to do with them being popular pets, and myself having a cat.

I think only endangered species and beings of similar or greater intelligence to ours are immoral to eat. Everything else is fair game.

Animals which we cant control the supply needed for demand are morally wrong to eat.

I absolutely despise Japan for their Whale eating ways.

None of them...I personally wouldn't eat dog/cat/human unless it was a survival thing, but it's nothing to do with morals. Just hits too close to home.

Edit: I take that back, Kozak has a good point I didn't think about.

I think the reason most people feel it's wrong to eat dog is because dogs have been connected to the human species for a long, long time. We breed them to work for us and keep us company. There are even some who say that without dogs, humans wouldn't have gotten as far as we have today.

Animals that are endangered, unless you're starving (to death).

Humans as well, but I'm not against cannibalism for survivability (unless the person who died didn't consent).

Personal list of things I WONT eat;

Brains
Tounges
Eyes
Apes/Simians
Insects/Snails
Really anything above the neck
Dogs/Wolves/Canines

I'd eat a horse, reptiles, not too keen on frogs but I'll do it. I don't enjoy the idea of eating a cat but I'd probably do it if I were kind of hungry and I didn't know the cat beforehand.

It's a complicated question.

Intelligence alone isn't a good factor. We already eat several intelligent species and I don't think it's necessarily immoral to do so.

I would include species that have been domesticated almost exclusively for human companionship, since we've selectively bred them to yield behaviors that make it is somewhat cruel to slaughter them. I would classify dogs and cats under this, but definitely not horses.

And certainly animals that are threatened or endangered should be off the table.
