What apps do you use on your PC to enhance the user experience?

Windows or Linux. What do you use everyday on your pc that's better than the stock apps. Do you use an alternative file explorer? What about an image viewer? Any decent desktop customizations to provide a unique experience? Animated backgrounds? Curious to see what people are using. I've been using the same thing for over a decade, good 'ol firefox, irfanview, and VLC.

I used to run Firefox as my main browser but after that last TOS controversy regarding use of my data, I completely stop using it.
Using Chrome, with Brave and DuckDuckGo as alternative browsers should Google go insane again with Chrome.

Audacity, VLC Player, 7zip, pretty much it.

on Windows 11 I mostly use registry edits to adjust stuff, like I have the old right click context menu, which is a reg edit.

the only third party program I use is Windhawk, to get my task bar on the top of the screen, since I can't stand it when my task bar is at the bottom... just too unergonomic :pie_bull:
sadly the registry edit you could do in early Windows 11 versions to do that have been basically patched out and don't work anymore, otherwise I'd not have to use any third party app I think.

for my browser I use Opera and Edge... I use Edge exclusively for Youtube and Twitch, and opera for everything else... I don't know why... but I just do lol.
VLC is of course installed, but I don't use it for every video file. the normal Windows video player is good to quickly check something out (like a clip I recorded or something) instead of booting up VLC for that each time.

Excellent image and video capture tool. I use it a lot, especially nice to be able to capture video from a region and have it straight in the clipboard for pasting.

Sunshine + Moonlight (Steam Link) for streaming PC to TV.

Copyparty - local file host to browser

Fluent Reader - RSS reader

Launchbox Game launcher + EXODOS - Complete set of DOS based games

I use Kate (KDE) for Windows as my text editor. I really like the customization:

Upscayl is a decent AI image upscaler if you want one local that works on any GPU:

Photopea is a browser app that is pretty much old Photoshop Elements:

I'm sad a lot of websites don't have RSS feeds anymore.

I can add more later, but Microsoft Powertoys is a nice tool set of extras I install by default. It's grown so much that I disable a fair few things these days, and some functionality even made it into Windows itself so YMMV, as they say.

They're so often overlooked now. Some websites have them but only push out article stubs or don't include images. There are still a great number of sites out there that do have feeds. I have an app on my phone too so I can digest long form articles on the go.

For browsing I use Firefox. I was using Edge before, but it kept randomly resetting my settings, so I decided to stop using it, it was a decent browser otherwise.

For video playback I use MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR. In terms of image quality, especially for watching movies with HDR support, there's no better combo in my experience.

For antivirus I just stick with the built-in Windows one, I don't see the need to buy a third-party AV, Windows Defender is more than enough for my usage.

For general Windows customization I use Windhawk. It's very easy to use and offers lots of customization options.

And finally, for anyone who wants animated wallpapers on their desktop, there's Wallpaper Engine on Steam. Really good, with lots of wallpapers to choose from.

A good headtracking device without breaking the bank:
BeamEye tracker

This thing should be the default experience in racing/simulation games.

Disk space analyzer: This one is old as hell but i can't live without it

Always help me to find some 10gb files here and there

Emulation store front: ES-DE

A good mod manager (almost an essential pc master race software): MO2 mod manager or Vortex

I gotta get some animated wallpapers on my PC as well... not sure why I didn't bother till no tbh, since I use gifs on all my android devices.

I mostly just make sure that the Xbox app is given no quarter to run in the background against my wishes. I use MS Edge, and I guess VS Studio Community and VS Code. Anything command-line-ish I do Linux things through WSL if I can. I don't bother with Office, I make do with Google Sheets and the like or LibreOffice depending on the task. Oh, and of course I murder OneDrive at the earliest opportunity. I pay for MEGA (Praise be to Kimdotcom), but haven't gotten around to reinstalling it since my latest Win 11 reinstall.

If I didn't play PC games that require anti-cheat I'd be loooong looong gone from this cursed platform.
I like Potplayer for general media but did recently pick up MPV for frame-by-framing a certain catgirl situation and it's reaaaaally swell for that. Most video players don't bother to handle reverse frame-by-frame due to how keyframing works.

I bought Fences on a steam sale a while ago and it was worth every penny. The roll-up feature is a game changer and made organizing my desktop so much easier and it looks so much cleaner now.

I don't use all of these every day, but they are very usefull.

Brave
7zip
Paint.net
Hibit uninstaller
Winget
Foobar
Notepad++
Potplayer
Classic calculator

One that has become a life saver while at work, is PowerRenamer. It's great for organizing large numbers of files and folders.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker. I use the old taskbar, not the shitty new ones Windows puts in the middle of the fucking screen. Plus I like to have my stuff in order so I can move the app tabs around.
