What are some of your favorite Sci Fi Movies of all time?

I've been bitten by the Sci Fi bug as of late, and have been spending a lot of time watching movies lately.

My all-time favorite Sci-Fi film is Blade Runner.
Blade%20Runner%20(P).jpg

But there are many others that come pretty close. Some of my favorite science fiction films are those that deal with dystopian themes. Visions of bleak futures. Movies such as The Terminator, Brazil, and Escape From New York come immediately to mind.

What sci-fi movies do you love? Also, what type of Sci-Fi film do you prefer? Alien movies(like Alien, Independence Day), time travel(The Time Machine, Back to the Future), inner space(Fantasic Voyage, Tron), apocalyptic(7th Sign, The Ninth Gate), post-apocalyptic(Mad Max, Soylent Green), fear of machines/technology(Gattaca, Terminator), space exploration(2001, Stargate), ecological disasters(Waterworld, Zardoz) or maybe just Sci-Fi thrill rides/epics like the Star Wars Trilogy? Discuss.

Director's Cut or Original?

Knows the Score
I would tend to agree, but I think there's a better cut possible that's a fine balance between the two.

A bit less "I'm Harrison Ford, and I'm going to talk through this entire movie. Never shutting up. Speaking. Even when things should be silent. I was in Star Wars."

And a bit more "..."

Alien (NOT Aliens - So Damn Disappointing)
Blade Runner
T2
Total Recall
T3 (fuck the haters)
The Matrix
Star Wars
ET
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Gattaca
Minority Report

All awesome. Loads more, but that's me done for the moment.

In all, six versions of Blade Runner exist:

The original theatrical release (1982), also called the domestic cut.
Two workprint versions, shown only as previews to test audiences' response; one of these was distributed in 1991, billed as a Directors Cut, but was not approved by Ridley Scott. These workprints have occasionally been shown at film festivals.
The Ridley Scott-approved Director's Cut in 1992, prompted by the unauthorized 1991 release. It does not include Deckard's explanatory voice-over. One scene was added: a dream Deckard has when he's dozing off at home drunk playing the piano. It shows a unicorn running through a forest. The final scene, where Deckard and Rachael are driving off into the wilderness, was removed from this edition. A couple of other scenes were extended slightly (mainly just city shots and flying scenes). This is the only version so far released on DVD.
The international cut, with more graphic violence.
The broadcast version, with some profanity removed.

The last one is padding the list a bit, but it counts.

Dead

well not really...yet
Alien
Brazil
Blade Runner
2001
A.I.
Matrix trilogy
12 Monkeys
Minority Report
The Terminator
Clockwork Orange
City of Lost Children
The Thing (maybe more horror, but it counts, love it to death)

Among others

Edit: damn forgot one big one

android

Theoretical Magician
2001
orginal Star Wars Trilogy
Planet of the Apes
Blade Runner
Predator
The Thing
first three Star Trek movies
Alien and Aliens
The Abyss
Terminator 2
Mad Max
Matrix

Damn except for the first Matrix, there hasn't been any good Scifi for quite some time.

I thought A.I. and I, Robot were pretty good. I know I'm in the minority on the former.

Also, The Manchurian Candidate was very good, though it isn't science fiction in the traditional sense.

Blade Runner: DC - haven't seen the original cut
2001
Alien
Star Trek 2
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Starship Troopers
Contact
12 Monkeys
Robocop
The Terminator
Gattaca
Spaceballs

A lot of good movies mentioned. Speaking of 'Apes, I'd add Soylent Green if it wasn't like the most spoiled movie of all time. :(

Edit: If you don't want to read it, you can always watch 1984 (the one from, err, 1984). John Hurt plays a brilliant Winston. It's a better movie version of the book than Brazil ever was. (And it so totally is, only with a lot of added crap that makes no sense at all and the amazing political commentary completely stripped out.)

Nope. Apollo 13 is definitely not science fiction. It's more of a historical drama. Still, a great film nonetheless.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I love about every type of sci-fi.
I particularly "have a hard-on for Cameron". (not sci-fi reference, but hey...)
Terry Gilliam and Ridley Scott are way up there.

That fucking quote did to liking James Cameron what Quentin did to Top Gun.

No, I think that was Titanic. And, if that quote makes someone embarassed to like his flicks, maybe they're gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

if you like Blade Runner, make SURE to see Dark City!

Everyone should see Dark City!

Oh yeah! That should have been in my list. Dark City was pretty awesome. I loved the moodiness of it. Almost like a film noir.

Dark City is pretty good. It has two problems though, firstly the prologue at the beginning of the film spoils quite a lot of the plot (cover your ears when you see the movie at first time :D). And the fight at the end is a bit anticlimatic.

Ha, yes, the prologue is TERRIBLE! It would have completely ruined the movie for me, had I not heard about it beforehand. Fans recommended I mute it until right after the titles, right when the camera goes down through the window into the bathroom, so that's what I did.

Buckaroo Banzai. It's all about Planet 10, you know it.

I love sci fi, movies in particular. Heck I saw the Lost in Space remake twice just so I could watch the new Jupiter 2 fly around.
