I finally broke down and got this game, and from the moment I booted it up I knew it was going to be a weird experience. The sonic and visual style of this game is very strange. I can't help thinking obscure, high-minded but deeply atmospheric late-'70s science fiction movie - kind of Tron meets Serial Experiment Lain. The graphical style, meanwhile, reminds me of old 16-bit action-adventure classics like Out of this World and Flashback. The way it all adds up makes this a game that should at least be experienced. The trouble seems to be that the big rental chains haven't bothered to stock it, and Capcom didn't release a demo version, either. So people might have gotten intimidated by the hype.
But they shouldn't. This game is simple, almost too simple. It's technically a third-person action-adventure game, but it's on rails and basically controls like a PC adventure game - press up to move through the room, tap down to turn around. When you get into combat, you press the R-trigger to enter a FPS-style shooter mode with excellent lock-on and a level of sensitivity that is just about right.
I would write more, and I will, but for now I want to keep playing.
