What are your biggest gaming regrets?

Did a search, didn't come up with anything...

Anyway, earlier today, one of my coworkers was talking about how he regretted selling a lot of his videogame gear. He's owned practically all of them, but wish he had kept his old systems like his NES, Coleco Vision, SMS, and Genesis. While you can get all of these on eBay, he said he and his family kept their systems and games in immaculate condition, and finding systems that aren't beat up (or games that come with manuals and boxes that don't look like they've been through a war or two) can be a headache-inducing exercise.

So, I started thinking about things I regretted as a gamer. While most of it has to do with selling off rare games or videogame-related goods, or anytime I start thinking about how much money I've spent on everything game-related :), I think the one thing that I really regret was about 5 years ago when my friend and I got so mad at each other while playing a game of Virtua Tennis that it actually negatively affected our friendship from that point forward. We never did play another multiplayer game again, and I think that has contributed to my own distaste for multiplayer games in general, which is unfortunate, because I used to love them.

How about everyone else? What has been your biggest regret(s) when it comes to games?

I bought a Gamecube over a PS2 at the beginning of the console wars.

At least I eventually got a PS2. I almost missed a generation of awesome gaming. :(

I sell old stuff all the time and don't regret it at all.

I too had a misfortune playing a multiplayer game that effected a casual but decent friendship. So odd.

I regret buying a lot of games and gaming items that I should have known I had no real interest in. I got caught up in my personal hype for a game or piece of gaming history.

Giving away my Apple IIgs, which had some awesome games like Space Quest I + II, World Games, etc.

There are some games I wish I had bought when they were reasonably priced, like Guardian Heroes, although I've had pretty good luck finding other rare games relatively cheap so I can't complain.

- My foolish Sega fantard pride almost made me skip out on the PS2. Once the Dreamcast failed, I vowed never to own a PS2. I figured I'd get an Xbox. I wasted several hundred dollars on the Xbox. I did enjoy Metal Slug 3 on it...but thats about it.

- The Saturn. That old mid 90s nostalgic feeling isn't as good as I thought it would be. About $600-700 wasted on a primo Saturn library but I got tired of it within days. Not weeks, not months, not years. Days. I think I sold all of it back for $400, so I lost about 30-40% of my money trading it back.

- Getting a DS twice. First time was because it was boring. The second time is that I keep forgetting how much I hate playing on handhelds. As much as I'd like to vow not to get another handheld again, I'll probably get several more. Hell, I'm sure I'll be one of the first in line to get the DS SP.

- Buying rare games instead of good games. Then to find out its not really rare and I lost money on a mediocre game. Marvel vs. Capcom 2, I'm looking right at you. From now on, I always buy the games that are fun and don't give a fuck if someone only made 10,000 copies of it. Lesson learned here.

Selling my Panasonic REAL 3D0
I accidently left my Return Fire disc in the tray...that game completely owned

definetly selling old stuff to buy new stuff.

and buying a launch ps2...then when it broke a few months later, buying another 1st batch ps2...rinse and repeat.

Buying a Sega CD, N64 (wish I had gotten a voodoo1 at the time instead), and Gamecube.

Not getting a Turbo Duo.

Not keeping my NES when the Genesis came out (was still some great games coming out for the NES).

paying full price for true crime 1 on ps2, mostly because of strict german laws. and btw. this game sucks! its not even worth a third of the price. and yeah, true crime 2 sucks too!

Screw you SEGA HATERS!

Saturn had plenty of good games on it.

Must not, let, anger, consume...breathe.....

To each their own. I have a lot of games I could only play on it so I love it still.

Thankfully, when I was a kid I ended up selling and then re-buying Super Mario World twice, so I learned that it makes sense to just keep every game for nostalgia's sake. If I hadn't of learned that, I probably would have ended up selling my SNES collection of Earthbound, FF6, Chronotrigger etc for a few N64 games, and I'd be totally regretting it. I'm glad that didn't happen, because I still play those games all the time.

I think my only real regret is not buying Dreamcast at launch and not getting Samba de Amigo, because I'm trying to get it now and it's a total bitch to get. I was really into Starcraft and Counterstrike at the time, and I wasn't following console games at all.

-Selling my NES in order to buy a SNES. I definitely don't regret purchasing the SNES, but having to give up the NES so I could afford one just killed me. I've kept every other system I've ever owned, from the Coleco Telstar on.

-Being one of the eleven morons in the world who bought a 32X. It was so clearly a stop-gap that Sega had no intentions of supporting after the Saturn came out, and yet I bought one anyway.

Same here. I usually think I'm going to regret getting rid of something more than I actually do. I'll look at some dust-collecting game on my shelf and think "I don't really play this anymore...but it was so fun back when I first got it, I can't get rid of it." If I just sold it and didn't think about it so much, I'd probably forget I ever even owned it within a week.

The only games I ever truely regretted selling was Rygar for the NES (I sold my NES to get a Genesis, later I bought a top-loading NES and got Rygar back) and Mischief Makers for the N64 (I rebought that one eventually also).

I don't have any I don't think... I'm hoping the $375 I just dropped on a 360 isn't the first.

Trading Dropship: United Peace Force for Max Payne

Skipping class to go to the arcade :(

I regret it, but I don't at the same time.

Oh, and buying ultimate mk3 for sega saturn for $60. Ouch.

I spent a stupid amount of money for a Jpn Gamecube at launch. I think I've played less than 10 games on this thing. :lol

I also bought that limited edition Xenosaga boxset thing.

My biggest regret is that I never picked up a Saturn or Dreamcast when they were dirt cheap.

Also, kinda regret choosing the N64 over playstation as well as picking up a Gamecube a few months back.

But I've learned my lesson - no more Nintendo consoles for me.

Selling my SNES and 45 of the best games you could get for it (including pretty much every squaresoft RPG) for $75 after I played my first SNES emulator and figured the gear was obsolete.
I hate myself a little bit everyday for this.

Not getting a Saturn with Nights and VF2 when it had been discontinued and was being sold for next to nothing in second hand stores.

LOL at people who say "buying a Saturn"!

I would have regretted getting an Xbox at launch because MS dropped the price by heaps right after but they sent me two free games and a controller - good save MS!

On the first one, they are pretty cheap now. 20 dollar cheap.

Same on the second point.

Every camper, every sniper-whore I've left un-fragged.

Ugh.

devoting my time for a Neverwinter Nights fansite and importing Neverwinter Nights for 70€. Worst RPG i've ever played, Bioware betrayal.

Being so close to buying a PS2 around launch...then deciding to wait and save my money for a GameCube instead. At least I was fortunate enough to eventually be given a PS2 as a gift, but I'm still playing catch-up to this day.

Getting a Genesis over a SNES just becuase Sega was having that "Buy a Genesis with Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 free" deal. There were more games on SNES I wanted to play (friend got one before me), but I just got greedy and wanted 2 games. :lol

Selling my NES-themed GBA when I got the DS.

Passing on a copy of Valkyrie Profile that was in perfect condition to get "The Bouncer".

Selling my SNES and all my games for around $200 back in 1997. What's so bad about that? Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III were among those games. :( I could've gotten some mad cash for that shit now!
