Is it constitutional? The Ninth circuit said its not constitutional, the Supreme Court side stepped the issue. Its interesting to note that in Minersville School District vs. Gobitis in 1940 (before "Under God" was added) the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for people to be forced to resite the pledge because Jehova's Witnesses do not pledge allegiance to any being less than God.

toss that shit. it aint supposed to be there in the first place, and now i'm hearing more and more cases of people being punished for not saying it. ultimately it's not a big deal, but if there was ever a time for someone to scream bloody murder about a slippery slope kind of policy, well, this is it in my opinion.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
It's there for a ridiculously bullshit reason and doesn't belong there in the first place.

I think of it in terms of the abstract god. As opposed to the white man living in clouds God.

Although "God Bless the Ring" craps all over "One nation under God."

I'm all for a higher power endorsing fisticuffs.

I don't agree with it at all... I think religion should be completely seperate from every other aspect of this country. The United States has many different people. Not everyone is Christian. Some aren't even religious, like me. It makes no sense that Christianity has to, for some reason, at least appaer to be at the head of everything important in this country.

It's a ridiculous government endorsement of bullshit. It was put in the pledge by politicians who wanted to show their constituents how anti-USSR they were. "Whatever them commies are fer, we're agienst!"

Oh by the way, I think it should be banished from the pledge and all other appearances it makes throughout the government.

say what? My mind reels at the idiocy of the above statement.

on topic, it was stupid when they added it and it's even more stupid that people can't let go of it. And the religious right wonders why we fight them so furiously, once they get something, even if it's for a limited time, they will not let go of it. Communism has effectively been dead for 15 years (ok, China).

I believe in God, but I wouldn't necessarily care if it was removed. But if I had to pick one side, I'd side for the phrase staying.

Just do what I always did and say "under Dog" when you have to recite it. That usually either makes people laugh or annoys them, either way you win.

:lol

If the christians want to keep bringing up their god, I'm just going to have to keep saying that he's an imaginary space tyrant with an unhealthy obsession with other people's sex lives. If they can't handle that sort of thing (and a lot of them really get worked up over it), then maybe they should stop bringing it up.

("worship themselves". Listen to yourself some time, okay?)

FYI, officially it is "...one Nation, under God..."

What do you think of this: say an atheist says the pledge. Since God doesn't exist to him, one nation under God doesn't exist either and thus, to atheists saying the pledge actually weakens their patriotism.

Wow, I'm amazed at how many people are saying to drop it. Other times I've seen this come up, I always get buried alive when I say to cut it. I remember being creeped out by the "under god" thing all the way back in the first years of elementary school. I don't think most people patriotically arguing to keep it in have any idea it was an artificial addition tacked on just a few decades ago.

...what the fuck :lol (edit -- haha, nice to see that I wasn't the only one to react this way)

I'm not American, so I have no opinion on this matter (though that's never stopped me before), but I was happy to see that the Canadian constitution has no mention of God. Though "God" is in our national anthem, curiously enough. I'm agnostic myself.

America's only constitutional refference to religion is some date says blah blah blah the year of our lord.

I know when I say the pledge, I think "One nation, under ME!" So America should take note, for if you cross me, I will crush you.

I say fuck the whole pledge. Why should I have to plege my allegiance to the United States? I sure as hell don't agree with invading the whole god damn Middle East for our own benefit, so I say fuck pledging my allegiance. </very mini rant>

Edit: Hell, the Declaration of Independence even states that when a ruling body / government becomes corrupt, the people have the right to rebel and overthrow that government. So I think forcing us to pledge our allegiance is a load of bullshit that contradicts what our founding fathers wanted in the first place. Now, the government is in no way so corrupt that I'm suggesting revolution, but I reserve any allegiances I may or may not hold in the case of future corruption.

For me, saying God is the same as saying Holy Mackerel or Heaven help us or Goddamn it or whatever. In short, it's just words and our country has wasted billions on them already.

Goddamn it.
