What console has the best version of GAUNTLET?

I've played the arcade version and the NES version. The NES version was pretty good for it's music. I'm pretty sure genesis had a port of the game as well. Which hardware got the best version? Gaunlet2 on NES sucked pretty bad though. The game had no music. I played all the way up to something like level 50 before, but I had to quit because the lack of music really did me in. :D

Genesis Gauntlet IV's the best one, perfect arcade graphics plus it has an adventure mode like the NES Tengen version

I'd go with the Tengen NES version of Gauntlet, but I've only also played Gauntlet 2 on SNES and some Gauntlet on N64.

The NES version was the best version of Gauntlet, plus it came on one of those cool, Tengen produced black carts. Ah, sticking it to the man... well, or trying to at least.

Don't recommend games that don't exist. ^_^; Unless it's Euro-only or something?

I'd say Gauntlet IV for Genesis. The arcade emulation of Gauntlet on Midway Arcade Treasures sucks for some reason, I forget what though (other than the fact that the original game doesn't stand the test of time). Something about being based on an impossible-to-beat version of the arcade machine, maybe. Some Gauntlet fiend explained it on GameFAQs once.

Gauntlet IV on Genesis is the best one. Excellent conversion of the first Gauntlet with the "IV" portion of the game being an rpg-ish romp through 4 towers. The music was fanfuckintastic!

I might have to find my Nomad and play the game for old times sake. :lol

Wasn't Gauntlet 3 a Lynx game that really had nothing to do with the rest of the series? I think so, anyway.
Yeah. Gauntlet III: The Third Encounter was originally a completely unrelated game being developed by Epyx. After Atari picked up the Lynx project, the Gauntlet license was applied. The game really bites, though. The best part is that the character classes include nerd, pirate and punk rocker. Yep, that just screams Gauntlet.

Here is a properly-scored review. I can't imagine why the other reviewer on that site gave it a 77%. Classic Atari fans are usually inscrutable and/or crazy.

I'd say the Amiga version, even if it was only slightly enhanced over the ST one.

That, or the MAME version on Xbox

I think all console versions of Gauntlet have one fatal flaw: the game isn't fun if there isn't money on the line. A friend of mine got a nice Gauntlet arcade cabinet a while back, set it on free play, invited some folks over, and let us have at it. We sat there and played the hell out of that game...and after a while it got rather dull. If you aren't putting in your quarter, there just isn't that much incentive to play.

Of course, mileage varies - but I can't say I'm ever going to be that excited about a home Gauntlet port.

I'd think money would make it more interesting, but I seemed to enjoy Dark Legacy and Legends on the home console just as much as the arcade versions.

Shut-up! I didn't recommend it! ...and umm, it was a typeo or something, yeah.

The "adventure" aspect of the NES Gauntlet wasn't something so common back then as today. Plus finding secret exits, writing down pass codes... ah, those were the days.

Back in the day the mindless hack&slash of Gauntlet was great, but a new Gauntlet would have to add a lot more. I've been spoiled by modern games. That said if done right (IF) a new Gauntlet could be really cool.
