What current gen games will have huge increases in value?

kaizoku

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
I would find this useful, kind of a prediction/record of games that have or will become valuable in years to come, the same way some SNES games have.

I know ICO has become pretty valuable in the limited edition package, whilst FFX isn't valuable at all compared to FF7.

Anyone care to compile a list for this gen? Be interesting to see if any GC/Xbox games make the list!

Maybe you can add PS1/DC/N64 if you think of some too.

You're joking right? There's already several GC and XBox games that were so limited in release that they regularly sell on eBay for more than original MSRP.

For GC:

Cubivore
Ikaruga
Maybe Beyond Good & Evil
Maybe Chaos Field

For Xbox:
Steel Battalion
Maybe Psychonauts

For PS2:
Rez
Disgaea
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Phantom Brave
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (1&2)
La Pucelle
Makai Kingdom
Stella Deus

And tons more, but this is just off the top of my head.

Took me forever to find my copy of Shadow Hearts. In fact, I haven't seen it new in person. I could just be a total moron, however. Seems like a title that might be worth something some day.

I think these are definitely going to increase a lot unless another reprint comes around. It fits the mold (quality RPG, low distribution) that drives a lot of games to shoot up in value (see Valkyrie Profile)

Psychonauts I don't know, I think there are probably too many copies floating around for that to be super rare.

I think Klonoa 2 may go up as that becomes less and less available, shooters are also hot commodities so maybe R-Type Final, although I don't know how many of those are available

Games in value are coming to an end thanks to GQD!

For PS2:

Phantom Brave
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
La Pucelle
Stella Deus

Look at that, I'm selling those games right here on GA -- AT RIDICULOUSLY LOW PRICES

BUY THEM NOW GAF AND INVEST IN WHAT COULD BE A FUTURE GOLDMINE

Border Down (DC)
Gunfighter Girl (PS2)
Homeland (and Beta) (GC)
Metal Wolf Chaos (Xbox)
WE6 (GC)
Shox (PS2)

And how could I forget... Gitaroo Man.

If I knew I'd just buy as many copies of them as I could.

I would bet that complete copies of the more elusive and/or sought after GBA games, like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, Shining Force, and NES Classics Super Mario Bros., have not yet reached the peak of their value, because the boxes and manuals are routinely pitched out either right after purchase or at trade-in.

RPGs in general tend to command higher prices more easily, just because you get more game for your dollar - even at the nosebleed level, there is some form of price sensitivity. The ones that are most likely to gain value are the Shin Megami Tensei games - Nocturne and the two Digital Devil Saga titles. If it continues to sell at its current, Valkyrie Profile-like rate, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance could be a close second.

Resident Evil 4 for PS2 might turn into a collector's item, because it's selling much more slowly than it should. The special editions of both the PS2 and GCN versions will become expensive for sure.

I think some Gizmondo and N-Gage games might become expensive, even if only briefly.

I like RPGs

I bought it for $18 and the top auction on ebay right now is for around $31.

The game didn't sell many copies on the PS2 (60k-70k) when compared to the Xbox (260k).

...about 200k less. :(

Oh.. that's still twice as much as lifetime sales of Valkyrie Profile, so I guess I have to retract that prediction. Not that it couldn't still get expensive, since the original Fire Emblem sold a lot more and it's now going for $30 at minimum...

In the absence of those two, then, I don't really see anything obvious. Recently there have been some downright dumb games that have gotten atrociously expensive - World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars 2002 (PS2) has got to be the worst offender, though it's apparently a very good... uh, sprint-car sim. The market is always hard to predict. For all I know, the next Holy Grail might be FFXI with the hard drive.

That's odd. I just saw that game at work the other day, too.

If Grandia 3 is as limited as rumored to be then it'll be one of them.

Limited to 250,000 copies.. for its initial run alone. I'm not buying that one because I think it will be rare. Metal Saga, on the other hand...

I think it's also worth mentioning that Metal Gear Solid 2 vanilla is pretty hard to find new even with the GH label, Konami stopped printing copies like 2 years ago.

a lot of games mentioned in this thread were reprinted, you don't think that would take away from their value?

REs for GC, Rez, gitaroo man, etc etc etc

Shooters are not hot commodities in the US - just Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Chaos Field is almost certainly rare, but it sucks, so when I ship it away to Wobedraggled this week it will go without a tear from my eye.

GBA:

Breath of Fire I/II
Castlevania AoS/HoD/Double Pack
Fire Emblem
Golden Sun
Lunar Legend
Ninja Five-O
Phantasy Star Collection
Shining Force
Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis
Zone of the Enbders

Maybe:

Advance Guardian Heroes
Astro Boy
CIMA
Fire Emblem: SS
Golden Sun 2
Gunstar super Heroes
Klonoa
Klonoa 2
Lufia: Ruins of Lore
Wario Ware/Twisted

Also, sealed copies of common Nintendo-Published games will become valuable in a few years.

DDR Mario Mix comes to mind.

If impossability to get is any indication, here in the UK Lost in Blue and probably Pheonix Wright for DS will be expensive to pick up. I'm not even sure PW has a release date, and Lost in Blue is out of print.

Fucking A time for a list:

White Label sealed Gitaroo Man
White Label sealed Rez
White Label, LE sealed Nocturne
White Label, sealed Technic Beat (mark my words)
White Label, sealed Castle Shikigami II
White Label, sealed ZOE2

fuck any of these too
Naval Ops: Warship Gunner
Shadow Hearts
Tsugunai
Forever Kingdom
Jade Cocoon 2

WHO KNOWS. MANY MANY MORE. Also, non-gh SEALED FFXs are already valuable. I have 7. Only have 2 Kingdom Hearts non-gh SEALED. Those are the real goldmine.

Phantom Brave
La Pucelle

are very common. You can still get both for 20 bucks new.

Heck Disgaea alone is probably worth more than makai kingdom, Phantom Brave and La Pucelle combined.

You could find Panzer Dragoon Saga for $10 new in the clearance bins in 1999.
